E039 The Power of Sound with Charlie Christie
In this episode, we dive deep into the power of sound and the impact it can have on our mental clarity and focus. Having discovered sound healing whilst living and working in Dubai, Charlie shares the science behind this ancient healing modality and the impact it has had on her life and those people she now works with across the globe.
KEY TAKEAWAY
“I have never been a big fan of the word leadership. I don’t see myself as a leader because I am no different to you. I’m not there to tell people what to do, we’re doing it together. It’s the same as the sound healing work I am doing right now. This is the goal; this is what we are aiming for and what we need to do. Let’s do it together. There is no separation.”
ABOUT CHARLIE
Charlie is founder and owner of Thyme with Charlie. A yoga teacher and sound healer she has been running her own internationally certified Sound Healing Academy with Tibetan Singing bowls for several years.
Having been exposed to the holistic healing world since birth she has always been fascinated by what the human eye can’t see. Charlie learnt Reiki at 15 years old and practised on anyone whom she was drawn to help, including the family pets.
Charlie discovered sound healing whilst living in Dubai and immediately connected with it. The practice aided the healing of both physical and emotional ailments and after seeing and feeling the results, she was hooked on this ancient healing modality. Since then, she has developed her healing abilities as an intuitive lightworker and energy healer and now works across the world to help people to find their true self and inner peace.

E038 Lead with Unbounded Empathy with Jo Berry
In this episode we dive deep into the world of conflict and conflict resolution. When she was twenty-seven years old, Jo’s father Sir Anthony Berry was killed by the IRA in the 1984 Brighton hotel bombing. Faced with her grief, Jo chose to give up on revenge and instead find a way to bring peace to the situation. Sixteen years later Jo met with the man responsible, Pat Magee and since then they have shared a platform speaking together on more than 300 occasions. As Jo shares her story, we explore how replacing our need to control and blame others with unbounded empathy can help us become better leaders.
KEY TAKEAWAY
“Leadership is the ability to have empathy with everyone in the organisation, to recognise one's own patterns of wanting to blame and control. I don't think controlling works. Leadership works with people. They're not there with all the answers, that does not create a safe listening, empathic culture. A leader will be able to have boundaries and will be able to challenge people, but in a way, which is about the dignity, without shaming, without making them wrong. And they'll give people space to make mistakes and learn from them.”
ABOUT JO
Jo Berry is an inspiring speaker who works to resolve conflict around the world. Founder of the charity ‘Building Bridges for Peace’, Jo advocates that unbounded empathy is the biggest weapon we have to end conflict. With political, religious, and racial divides deepening as global and local events unfold, her words offer a message of hope and encourage us all to see the humanity in others.
Jo is frequently invited to address international conferences and seminars on themes of reconciliation, conflict resolution and peace. She has given talks and workshops in areas around the world including Lebanon and Rwanda, India, South Korea, Palestine, and Israel as well as throughout the U.K. She has also joined panels and discussions forums on radio and TV.
In recent years Jo has developed workshops in schools and with youth groups on topics of conflict transformation, storytelling, becoming positive changemakers, and challenging violent extremism. She is a TEDx speaker and a Visiting Fellow with the University of Nottingham (Research Primary Area in Rights and Justice). Jo is also trained as a Restorative Justice facilitator and is an advocate for Restorative Justice around the country.

E035 Managing & Perceiving Emotions with Dr. Kevin Conn
In this episode, we dive deep into emotional intelligence, which Kevin defines as the ability to manage and perceive emotions. Having spent nearly fifteen years working with and researching the topic we explore why Kevin believes it is a key leadership skill and how emotional intelligence can improve team performance and engagement.
KEY TAKEAWAY
‘It’s all about how you treat people. How are you impacting others with your emotional management? Your reaction to your team, your friends, your colleagues can make their day better, or potentially worse, and it's being able to realise your impact. We are wired to act first and think second, that’s just the way our brain works. Taking a pause, and saying ‘what is my best reaction to this’ makes all the difference.”
ABOUT KEVIN
Kevin provides leadership and oversight for Student Housing and Residential Life at California State University Northridge. He received his Doctorate in Education from New York University and has experience working in small and large, private and public institutions. Kevin has and continues to serve on local, regional, and national associations within residence life and LGBTQ+ advocacy. He has nearly fifteen years of experience working with and researching the topic of emotional intelligence and related dynamics within both student and professional staff. Kevin has a strong passion for research turned engagement and has partnered with colleagues on international ACUHO-I grant-funded research projects focused on the evolving role of the Resident Assistant. Furthermore, he just published a book entitled Evolving Landscape of Residential Education, which is a collaboration with several global colleagues in the field. In his spare time, he is an avid marathon runner, foodie, and travel enthusiast.

E034 It’s About People Not Numbers with Rachael Lee
In this episode, we dive deep into the world of sales, what it means in the world of higher education and why as leaders we need to be comfortable selling. Having worked in hospitality sales for much of her career, Rachel shares with us some of her experiences working as Head of Sales & Marketing at Warwick Conferences and how, through her work with Academic Venue Solutions, she now wants to support colleagues across the UK, who are selling their university’s facilities for conferences and events.
KEY TAKEAWAY
“When you when you're in sales, you have to be inquisitive, you need to get to know what makes people tick, you need to understand, how to work out whether, what you've got is right for them, you've got to come up with the right solution. And it's so much more in depth than what people perceive as selling, as being pushy. For me, it wasn't ever about that it was always about getting to know the person.”
ABOUT RACHAEL
Rachael started out her sales career in conference centres, moving to hotels and then more latterly the academic sector, with 10 years as Head of Sales & Marketing at Warwick Conferences, part of the University of Warwick. Rachael left Warwick Conferences to start up her own business in November 2017 as RB Associates, a consultancy to help support venues with their sales strategies and now runs Academic Venue Solutions as Membership Director full time. Rachael has volunteered as Chair of the European chapter of IACC for 2 years and has recently become a Mental Health First Aider.
