DJ Comics Cavalcade

Tom Dejay admits up front to taking his inspiration for the podcast from "Tom vs. The Flash" and if you enjoy that show, this one has a lot of the same light hearted fun and love for the Silver Age of Comics. I particularly enjoy Mr. Dejay's analysis of the art styles. Tom has a great love of comics and a wonderful grasp of the joys of sequential art. I just have two small suggestions on how to improve the show: First, remember that the creators in the 50's and 60's were not writing for the audience of today. Of course the stories were hokey and often nonsensical. When reading Silver Age books you just have to go with the flow. Trying to analyze these stories with today's perspective is like criticizing old movies because the characters smoke too much. Secondly, PLEASE, I beg of you to watch the sound levels. In an attempt to be funny, Tom, you often suddenly shout into the mike which is physically painful when listening with my earbuds. Go easy on the Gilbert Gottfried bursts and I promise to keep listening.

Tom vs. the Flash is the claimed inspiration for this podcast… and I loved TVF so much I gave this 20 episodes before I checked out. Wow, it's not funny. Tom is funny. DJ, I'm sorry, is not. It's like the dull guy at school reading from joke books in a desperate attempt to be loved like the actual funny guy is. Sorry to be harsh , but there it is. And no matter how many times he says he's "inspired by Tom Katers" you can't help but get that niggling feeling that he really feels like "I'm way more talented than that Tom guy is".

This is a terrific quickie of a podcast that serves as a nice meal for comic book fans everywhere. Tom brings the funny 24/7 with his detailed, keen eyed synopsis and humourous observations. Gotta check this out everybody.

Even though I cannot stand Mr. Vanilla... err, I mean Hal Jordan, Tom Deja's coverage of Hal's Silver Age adventures is both fun and exciting. He's a very knowledgeable and hilarious host with a clear passion for the stories and era he's covering. That said, he doesn't go easy on the books or creators; this isn't a back-patting show. Tom is very fair, in that he's always willing to point out when the creators missed a step, and / or weren't exactly kind to the characters. If you have a love for (or are curious about) the Silver Age of comics, DJ Comics Cavalcade is a wonderful, to-the-point podcast that deserves your attention.
