 Hello! Vanessa here, to introduce my new podcast! Don’t Call Me Crazy! A podcast to destigmatize talking about mental illness. I’m going to be talking disorders, I’m going to be talking treatment, I’m going to be talking socioeconomic issues! I’ll also have special Hysteri Lesson (that is not a typo, that is me trying to be clever) episodes diving in to the sordid past of the study of the psyche.     An interview with May, in which we discuss working during the pandemic as a nurse

    This episode was recorded in mid-October, after the 6 week shutdown had occurred and things were just starting to open up again. I had a lot of trouble listening to this episode because we sounded so hopeful about the “end” of the pandemic. There has been no end, only fluctuating closures, a doubling of the number of dead in the US since this was recorded, and countless lives negatively affected by this virus. The “new normal” has taken a toll on all of our mental health- between isolation, financial stress, illness, death, and uncertainty.     An interview with Ross, on mixed race, half Asian identity, belonging, and mental health

    Today I speak with Ross Takahashi, a cast metal artist currently working on art to represent multi mixed race and specifically being half Asian. Ross is a Las Vegas based artist and art teacher who focuses in sculpture and traditional mediums. His artwork is based on the human condition, humanity, and the nature of Nevada. He holds a BA in Psychology from Nevada State College, and remains on their Arts and Culture Board.     An interview with Eric, in which we discuss substance abuse and mental health

    According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, up to 50% of people suffering from mental illness also struggle with substance abuse. Eric is one of those individuals. He has dealt with stigma and both situational and seasonal depression and due to this, turned to alcohol and drugs. He was 12 years clean, but relapsed a couple years ago and ended up overdosing and ill in the Intensive Care Unit. His healing was complicated by gallbladder surgery, liver disease, ascites, and living with two chronic lifelong illnesses. He is on the mend and recently clean again and has recommitted to sober living. He has been kind and open and honest about his life and struggles and I am so proud of him and thankful he was willing to come on my podcast to talk about such a taboo topic.

    An interview with your host Vanessa, on pregnancy and postpartum depression

    In this episode my husband guest stars as the host interviewing me on our two pregnancies, the lasting trauma that can come about from a difficult birth experience, and the horrors of postpartum depression and anxiety. TRIGGER WARNING: if you are pregnant or planning on getting pregnant, this may be an episode you should skip. It gets a little graphic, I did NOT have an ideal experience, and knowing what I went through won’t do you any good while you are pregnant- it will likely only freak you out and I don’t want to do that. But if you have just gone through childbirth or postpartum, or you are the partner of someone who is, I hope this episode helps you. You are not alone. And by identifying the maelstrom of foreign emotions going through me as postpartum depression, I was able to get the help I needed.
