Donuts and Devos Marifaith Mueller

The Israelites failed to drive out all the people in the Promised Land and now "they will be thorns in your side," according to the Lord. The influence of the Canaanites, the people they were supposed to drive out, took over and the Israelites abandoned God. They turned to other false gods, worshipping them instead. And God’s anger was ignited against His people.









"And they abandaoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt."

God had wanted the Israelites to drive the people completely out of the Promised Land. But they didn’t, and all these different tribes of people were now living with the Israelites in the Promised Land. These people worked as the Israelites' slaves, which of course, now made God’s people weak. This is going to be a very important point to remember as we move through Judges to understand where the Israelites find themselves.









"When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely."

With God’s help, the Israelites just conquered the Promised Land...well, most of it. They didn’t get the conquest completely finished. And they also made the peace with the Hivites, and they didn’t always follow all the instructions of the Lord. Without Joshua leading the people, it’s a good possibility the people of Israel would have done whatever they wanted to do. So Joshua tells the people, "Now therefore fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and faithfulness." Joshua tells the people to put away false gods and follow the one true God, the Lord that led them out of Egypt.

God has given Israel's enemies over to them, and they have been victorious. But now with the defeat of the Southern and Northern kingdoms, the Israelites have officially won the war. That means peace for the land. But peace for whom? Our story today serves as a great reminder of Whom we get our peace from, and what it means for us as God's children.

News of the southern kingdom's downfall to Joshua and the Israelites reached the northern kingdom. All the enemies of the Lord now gathered together and united in one large army to battle the Israelites. Their army was like the number of sand on the seashore. But God was still in control and fighting for Israel, and would deliver them all into the hands of His people.









"Do not be afraid of them, for I will give over all of them, slain to Israel."
