Parents and dealing with kids in sports

Being a parent today is hard enough but when you add sports, things get complicated. With all the competition, superteams and variety of games, we lose track sometimes of why we put our kids there in the first place. The values that we are looking to instill in our kids go by the wayside. We need to get back to making the game fun for our kids while we build good people and competitors. How are you as a parent? How does your child really feel? is it too late to change the perspective?

Are youth sports getting out of control?

Are youth sports getting out of control?

Youth sports are a multi-billion dollar industry. These are opportunities for kids to play the games that they love. But as of late sports, basketball in particular are growing more and more out of control. Players are being disrespectful to opposing teams, referees and even parents. Are we losing our way as a society? Parents are beginning to overstep with other adults. Fights are breaking out on the court and in the stands. A parent has even shot a coach over a kid's playing time. Where do we go from here? How can we get back to what once was or are we too far gone?

3 Topics: Letting kids go, Kids being comfortable with friends and Balance in Sports

Understanding when to let your kid go in today's sports world is hard. They are our "babies" and we have to do what is right for them. What if doing what is "right" for our kids is really hurting them? Should you coach your kids up to High School or should they know what it is like to deal with a coach and their natural bias? Our own kids understand what are the limits and that we will deal with more from them than a regular teammate, when is the time to take your hands off? Kids are getting close to friends in sports and want to be around them. We explain know how to distinguish what is good for your child and making them understand that we have to do what is best for them first. Relationship matters in sports but friends will be there and kids need to do what is best for them whether friends are their or not. Having balance in sports is important for kids in the long run.
