Drewling Samantics

Drewling Samantics

Drew and Sam are actors. They haven’t won any Academy Awards yet, and neither of them is in line to be the new James Bond (sorry Sam), but between them they do have over half a century’s worth of experience in the industry. Many months ago a combination of boredom, significantly reduced work opportunities (thanks pandemic!) and overactive and under-stimulated imaginations inspired them to create a podcast, and somehow they’re still at it. Join the Drewling Samantics chaps every Sunday (or download and listen later) as they give an entertaining insight into how their industry works - from modelling to voiceover, theatre to film, and television to streamed media, the gents talk about all areas of performance artistry, giving an insider view that is sometimes humorous, often eye-opening or poignant, and at times just downright strange! With regular guest appearances and the odd special ‘on location’ segment, Drewling Samantics brings something unique and fresh to the world of podcasts from two normal blokes, working in a rather abnormal industry.

S16E10 - Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk

Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk      Stepping it up this week with another superb guest, the Drewling Samantics chaps welcome fabulous performer and creative Maria Beadell to the show, to talk about taking to the streets of London! And, while that may sound a little strange, it is actually a pretty accurate description!    Maria has been on an interesting and varied journey to reach her unique sphere of performance. Beginning life as a teacher, travelling to exotic countries, working with improv. companies, and not forgetting the many interactive shows she’s performed alongside both Drew and Sam, now she walks the streets of London, treating tourists, enthusiasts and other members of the public to a historical experience like no other! Maria guides her audiences through the county’s capital, on a tour around some of the most famous (and infamous!) areas of the city. The characters she portrays all have individual stories to tell, either of the locale or about themselves, using the background of London’s streets as the stage. Centred around a perfect blend of well-known women and characters she has created to aid the narrative, Maria tells the tales of London’s most significant and prominent women of the past and present.    Her sense of humour, acting skill and detailed research have made her tours highly successful and increasingly popular, and although, as Maria explains, things don’t always run smoothly (there are many challenging variables to deal with when working in close contact with people and the elements!) the future is certainly bright for this lovely lady and her entertaining experiences. So check out what Maria has to say to the boys, but don’t be surprised when you’re rushing to book one of her tours afterwards!      Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@DrewlingSamantics    FaceBook.com/HerstoricalTours  HerstoricalTours.co.uk  Instagram.com/Herstorical_Tours_    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss   Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en  Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

    S16E09 - Iconic

Iconic      Some people are remembered for the societal contributions they make - ground-breaking discoveries, sporting achievements, scientific breakthroughs, great works of art, revolutionary inventions, important political actions. Many famous figures remain in the limelight seemingly forever, then there those individuals who enjoy a short ‘fifteen minutes of fame’ and fade from memory. Being remembered or even legendary though, comes about in various ways - some pursue notoriety, others become memorable by accident.    The entertainment industry has its own share of folk who have attained unforgettable status - with a portion being revered for their versatility shown in portraying characters of all different kinds, and others giving iconic and unforgettable performances that live with them forever. In this episode of Drewling Samantics, Drew and Sam focus on the latter, and discuss some actors and, more specifically, the roles for which they will always be remembered. There are some films that have defined the careers of their leading actors, BUT, is that definition actually opinion based? Can it entirely depend on the characteristics of the audience member? For example, does your age, or maybe your taste in genres, influence what you would say is a movie-star’s finest performance, or the character that they are, and potentially will be, primarily associated with? Or are there some actors who will never escape their foremost role - whether they want to or not!    Our podcasting pair take on another entertaining (and possibly dividing!) subject today, so tune in now as they deliberate, discuss and debate the significant roles undertaken by a selection of actors, that will (for many people) forever remain in the memory. Why not play along and see if you agree or have ideas of your own, the boys would no doubt welcome listener and viewer contributions. But don’t take it too seriously, it’s all a bit of fun - especially for Drew and Sam as they patiently wait for Drewling Samantics to reach “iconic” status…     Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@DrewlingSamantics    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss   Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en  Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

    S16E08 - Organically Minded

Organically Minded      Isn’t it refreshing to sometimes to step back from the hectic pace of the world, and appreciate the gentler, simpler and more honest skills and pleasures of life and art? Well this week Drew and Sam have a guest who epitomises just that!    Alastair J Braidwood is the latest fantastic visitor dropping in to Drewling Samantics, and he is a gentleman of wide and varied skills and experience. He primarily plies his trade as a performer and musician, but those are just two of his eclectic range of attributes. With a love of historic pastoral music, and skills developed to reflect this, he writes and produces music and productions that embrace all the worlds he is most passionate about - keeping traditional music alive, and taking it to new audiences whilst playing an amazing array of instruments to boot!    Alistair has played a range of characters from Captain Hook to Santa Claus, and relishes the joy these recognisable and much-loved roles bring to those who experience him performing as them. And his understated talent and appreciation of the past allows him to formulate, actualise and embody new characters, as well as reimagining already established figures. All this together makes him an undoubtedly unique and entertaining guest, who brings some fascinating facts and a ready wit to everybody’s favourite podcast - it’s not to be missed!     Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@DrewlingSamantics    Instagram.com/Alastair.J.Braidwood  Instagram.com/KentwellHall  Instagram.com/NewHardyPlayers    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss    Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en  Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

S16E07 - On the Road Again

On the Road Again      There’s no doubt that one of the greatest delights of working in the entertainment industry, is the chance to travel, meet and work with new people, and perform to new audiences. The willingness to tour and traverse cities, counties and sometimes even internationally in order to get shows and gigs (particularly the far away ‘one-nighters’) is one thing - but getting there is another!    Yes, this week the Drewling Samantics chaps are on the move (not literally of course, well not just yet anyway!) No, today’s topic of chat is around the willingness, necessity and complexity of travelling for jobs, and the logistical uniqueness of hardly ever having one regular place of work. The boys pick over an area of the business that, for them, is part of everyday life, and, while admittedly it is sometimes straight forward, often it can be problematic - which could put many people off! This pod has given us multiple examples of how the world of performance differs from other vocations, and the travel aspect is another obvious one - just look at how a lot more people are working from home in recent years, but of course for a great deal of the time and for numerous obvious reasons, that simply isn’t possible for an actor. And then there’s having your own mode of transport - both Drew and Sam are car owners and enjoy driving, something that a large proportion of performers aren’t and don’t. Alternative versions of transport are available of course but they present their own problems and pleasures.    So join this interesting and enlightening discussion, as Drew and Sam throw some light on their own successes and difficulties navigating this aspect of a creative’s life, and delve further into yet another of the intricacies of being a performer!     Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@DrewlingSamantics    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss   Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en  Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

S16E06 - Pushing the Right Buttons

Pushing the Right Buttons      It is said that “two heads are better than one”, but are two Sam’s better than one?! Well we can find that out in this very episode, as Drewling Samantics welcome another fabulous guest, this week, in the shape of the brilliant Sam Webber.    Sam is a performer, writer, producer, and sound and lighting technician - having spent some time doing the latter whilst touring with the half of our presenting pair that shares his Christian name. While he readily admits that he loves ‘pressing the buttons’, he’ll  will pretty much have a go at anything with an element of performance or creativity to it, which as he explains is how he managed to become the multi-talented person that he is. Another of the many strings to his bow is his willingness to push boundaries and go against the norm. This has resulted in him and co-creator (and wife!) Ella, dreaming up shows for children that tour to various venues and spaces, and play with the darker side of children’s imaginations, using puppets and stages in boxes - certainly a unique and intriguing way of presenting theatre.    Fascinating and passionate, Sam Webber is hugely entertaining and well worth listening to or watching, so join Drew Sam now as they double the Sams, for double the fun!      Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@DrewlingSamantics    Instagram.com/RootlingTheatre  RootlingTheatre.co.uk    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss   Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en  Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

S16E05 - Fit for the Part

Fit for the Part      We’re back with Drew and Sam once again for this week’s fabulous Drewling Samantics episode, and it seems like we’re giving the chaps a little bit of a “check-up”!    Viewers, rather than listeners of Drewling Samantics, and if you haven’t given a YouTube version of an episode a go you really won’t regret giving it a try, may at some point have asked themselves: “Just what does it take to look like those two?!” (be that with a positive or not so much sentiment!) But actually both our proud presenters seem to be on their game and in fairly decent shape. Admittedly it may take a few vitamins and a quick top up of hair dye every now and then, but Drew and Sam really are not doing too badly at all!    Joking aside, keeping fit is very important. Touring schedules, pantomime season, long filming days and extended productions all demand a lot, and keeping healthy - both in body and mind - is an integral part of being able to succeed in the performance industry. So, not only during work but in those periods between contracts and getting prepared for the next job, a performer’s health is another area of professional maintenance. Drew and Sam both take this seriously and today’s show gives them an opportunity to discuss and share their own thoughts and methods for keeping ‘job ready’.    So tune in now to find out more about how a performer stays fit, with the obligatory jibes and teasing - come on, it wouldn’t be Drewling Samantics without them!      Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@DrewlingSamantics    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss    Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en  Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

    S16E04 - Full Steam Ahead

Full Steam Ahead     Our podcasting pair certainly are having a busy summer, with numerous projects and productions, self-tapes, assignments and castings taking up their time (not forgetting cheering on England in the World Cup!) Someone else who is just as busy - and similarly revelling in the opportunities - is this week’s guest, Paul Andrew Goldsmith. An actor, writer, director, producer and voiceover artist, Paul is another creative who seizes every possible chance to work and learn.   Paul is equally as happy writing, directing and producing as he is appearing on stage and screen, but creating work that encourages new audiences, especially his productions predominantly targeted at children and younger audiences, is clearly a particular passion. As founder and director of Twisted Reality Productions, he and his team produce a wide variety of shows for various venues and audiences, including the enormously successful and much loved Polar Express Christmas experience in Norfolk. A project, he explains, that is already deep into production with casting for this year’s show rapidly approaching.   Paul is also a very generous and empathetic creative, taking care of other performers even when having to give bad news such as an unsuccessful audition. His sensitivity and sympathetic attitude toward other actors is rare and very welcome in an increasingly competitive industry. So join the boys now as they chat to another fabulously talented and genuinely lovely member of this fascinating industry!      Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@DrewlingSamantics    Instagram.com/PaulAndrewGoldsmith_Actor  TwistedRealityProductions.com Twitter.com/PGoldsmith1 VShowcards.com/Profile/Goldsmith   RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss   Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en  Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!

    S16E03 - Social Security

Social Security      The times they are a changing, and in this rapidly moving world things have to adjust and evolve quickly, which often means substantial consequences in many areas of our lives. Today we’re treated to Episode Three of Drewling Samantics Season Sixteen, where Drew and Sam discuss the recent developments surrounding social media.    Social media is an enormous part of life that continues to grow seemingly exponentially, and some might argue in many ways we are losing control. As a result, the recently announced ban for under sixteen year olds is set to kick in, and in this show the boys reflect on the impending limiting of what these children and young adults can access, and the possible ramifications that could have for the performing arts, games and content creators. Not only that, but they also carefully address allegations made about the safety of participants on reality TV shows, and how far production companies are (or are not) going to protect them.    Serious stuff in this latest Drewling Samantics outing, but our dynamic duo never shy away from the trickier issues, and these are definitely intriguing and important topics that no doubt listeners and watchers alike will want to tune in to.      Social Media  Facebook.com/DrewlingSamantics  Instagram.com/DrewlingSamantics  Twitter.com/Drew_and_Sam  Youtube.com/@drewlingsamantics    RSS Feed  https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1696714.rss     Music  Vlad Gluschenko - Sunny Winter Day  Creative Commons Attribution 3.0  https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en  Ping us a message - we love to hear your thoughts!
