Did you know that the fastest-growing audiences on TV are for women's sports? (Forbes 11/28/22)

Join us as we hear from hockey royalty Annie Camins - standout prep and collegiate player, now a wife and mom with 2 decades of NHL experience prior to joining the team that launched the PWHL, taking it from an announcement to puck drop in just 125 days. E16. Bad science+flashy headlines = consumer clickbait.

    E16. Bad science+flashy headlines = consumer clickbait.

Springboarding from a recent attention-grabbing concussion headline, we discuss strategies to become more savvy consumers of science that affects our everyday lives. We talk about examples of ways that the popular press and social media can skew the actual scientific data....and discuss resources that can help listeners become informed consumers and find fact-based resources to guide decisions regarding youth sports, health, and safety.
We want you to remember, too, that headlines may sell papers but are just the starting point vs. the ending point. One study is just one study, and correlation (relationships) don’t prove cause. Just like school mascots have nothing to do with your school’s concussion rates, sometimes a coincidence is just a coincidence.

E15. Concussion Technology for sale: Buyer Beware

E15. Concussion Technology for sale: Buyer Beware

True to our brand, we tackle some of the latest trends in concussion-prevention - specifically, protective helmet covers. As youth sports are increasingly monetized, savvy marketers play to parents safety-related concerns with all kinds of things to diagnose or prevent concussions. While something as simple as a padded helmet cover may seem harmless enough, is it really?

Science doesn't always keep pace with production of the latest-and-greatest, but there's much we do know. We share with you our opinions on what to look for, how to read the research that businesses tout, and what the NFL is finding out about sports equipment technology and helmet safety.

Remember, lipstick on a pig is just lipstick on a pig.

E14. The injured athlete - When you can't just walk it off

E14. The injured athlete - When you can't just walk it off

10 years ago the Aspen Institute reported research indicating that risk of injury was the primary concern of parents surveyed about youth sports participation.

The benefits of youth sports are so great, however, and most major risks can be effectively mitigated or managed.

That doesn't mean that visible and invisible injuries are pain-free, though, and their impact can extend  beyond the playing field, gym, ice,  course, or pitch for many athletes and regardless of age or status, just as real-life pressures and issues can impact competition and play, too.

We're real moms, talking about real science and real life.
