From my perspective as of today as a longtime admirer of China’s traditional culture, Drum Tower used to have a more hard-edged tone—sometimes even hostile and mimicking—but aimed at factual reporting on serious, often painful issues affecting everyday people’s lives under political and economic pressures. Since Alice’s departure, it has shifted to something more vanilla: smoother, but occasionally lacking depth or even accuracy. That said, discovering David Rennie has been a highlight—he’s one of the most factual and empathetic journalists I’ve come across. I understand it’s difficult to strike the right balance, but I hope Drum Tower continues to aim for the kind of depth that once made it such a vital listen.
