    The Roundtable: Marketing Moves

Roundtable participants, from left to right in video: Chloe Jones (Monadnock Paper Mills), Jim Benedict (ENPOINTE), Betsy Davis (Sandy Alexander), David Murphy (Nvent Marketing) There are many insightful and interesting moments in this Dscoop Roundtable discussion among four marketing leaders in the print industry. They share specific strategies for standing out, building brands and supporting sales. It's an energizing half hour of real-world tactics and honest talk about what works (and doesn't) in print marketing today. One recurring theme was the challenge of getting noticed and building credibility in a crowded market. The group explored how differentiation comes from strategic branding decisions, understanding your ideal client and creating compelling campaigns that reflect your company’s unique strengths. They each reflected on the process of defining — and refining — their brand identity over time, including major rebranding efforts to keep their visuals and messaging fresh. The discussion also addressed how younger generations consume information and engage with marketing differently. The marketing leaders emphasized the importance of educating younger team members and prospects about the value of print and direct mail, which many Gen Z and millennial audiences aren’t as familiar with. There was shared interest in creating modern, multi-channel campaigns that integrate print and digital storytelling. Importantly, technology and tools came up as well, with panelists weighing in on CRMs, automation platforms and content development software. Rather than relying on every trendy tool, the group emphasized intentionality — making sure tools align with specific marketing goals and don’t just create more noise. They shared ideas for supporting sales teams with better collateral, videos and data-driven materials.

The Roundtable: Print Leadership in Focus

Roundtable participants, from left to right in video: Devin Springston (Branded By Woods), Kevin Lucius (Econoprint), Miki Rubin (IMPRIMU), Paul Hudson (Hudson Printing Company), Emily Manzo (SLADE Print) What does it really mean to lead today? That’s the big question tackled in the latest Dscoop Roundtable conversation — and the five leaders at the table didn’t hold back. The conversation began with reflections on the complexity of team building, especially as workplaces evolve with shifting expectations around family ownership, team building and leadership styles. The group also shared honest reflections on the missteps that come with marketing and hiring, and covered the importance of setting clear expectations, building trust and recognizing when to pivot or provide more support. They also explored the emotional weight leaders carry. They spoke about how isolating the top role can feel at times — the quiet burden of protecting culture, making hard decisions and maintaining stability even when things are uncertain behind the scenes. They opened up about the personal impact of leadership, including the challenge of managing stress, staying energized and remaining authentic with their teams. Each panelist emphasized the need to foster a workplace culture where team members feel safe enough to share ideas, admit mistakes and challenge the status quo. The leaders discussed how creating this kind of culture requires intentionality, vulnerability and consistency. The conversation also surfaced another shared theme: the difficulty and necessity of letting go. As their businesses grew, several leaders had to transition from hands-on doers to facilitators of others’ success. That evolution required building systems, trusting others with execution and redefining what success looks like from the leader’s seat. They acknowledged that growth often means changing their own behavior, not just the behavior of their teams. Throughout the discussion, a sense of connection ran deep. The leaders acknowledged that while their businesses differ in size, geography and structure, many of the leadership struggles are the same. Being able to openly discuss those challenges with fellow Dscoopers — peers who understand the stakes — was an energizing and affirming experience. This Roundtable is a powerful, unscripted exchange that reveals the human side of leadership — the doubts, decisions and personal growth that come with guiding others. For anyone in a leadership role, the conversation offers insights, encouragement and real-world perspective from those who are walking the same path.

    The Roundtable: Talking Business Development

Roundtable participants, from left to right in video: Emily Burkhart (Ideal Printers), Loren Willis (Hederman Brothers), John Misasi (Thysse), Hanna Schatteman (GSB Digital) and Todd Kalagher (Allied Printing). This Dscoop Roundtable features a lively, honest discussion about business development in today’s print landscape. Five industry leaders share what’s driving growth at their companies, from refining sales strategies to building strong client relationships and creating standout service experiences. One shared theme was the need for alignment between business development teams and company culture. Several panelists spoke about how successful sales efforts start with internal consistency — making sure everyone understands and lives out the company’s brand promise. That alignment builds trust with customers and gives teams the confidence to communicate value more clearly. The conversation also touched on hiring, training and retaining sales talent. Panelists exchanged insights about what makes a great salesperson today, from curiosity and grit to listening skills and adaptability. They shared lessons from building teams with both experienced pros and eager newcomers, and the importance of setting clear expectations early. Technology and data played a role as well. Participants described how they’re using tools like CRMs, email automation and production dashboards to track activity, support customer service and make smarter decisions. But just as important, they emphasized, are the simple habits: follow-up, handwritten notes and showing up when it counts. This unscripted conversation offers plenty of relatable moments and actionable insights for anyone working to grow their print business in a thoughtful, sustainable way.

The Roundtable: Leadership Behind the Scenes

Participants from left to right in video: Sarah Gossett, Nova Brand Projection Christopher Burnley, Corefact Rosemarie Breske Garvey, Blooming Color Josh Russell, CBi Print Leadership in print today looks very different than it did even a few years ago. In this Dscoop Roundtable, four industry leaders — Sarah Gossett of Nova Brand Projection, Christopher Burnley of Corefact, Rosemarie Breske Garvey of Blooming Color and Josh Russell of CBi Print — come together to talk about what it really takes to build strong teams in a fast-moving, high-pressure environment. The conversation quickly moves beyond strategy and into how people feel, how they grow and how culture shows up in the day-to-day reality of work. The group acknowledges the stress that comes with leadership, but emphasized that purpose, shared ownership and a sense of contribution can transform that pressure into something beautiful and sustainable. When teams feel invested in both the customer experience and the company’s success, they show up differently. That mindset connects directly to how leadership itself is evolving. Across the discussion, there was a clear shift away from top-down decision-making and toward empowerment. The most effective leaders are not trying to have all the answers, the group says. Instead, leaders are creating environments where people closest to the work can contribute ideas, make decisions and take ownership of outcomes. In production environments especially, the insight and expertise on the floor often surpass what can be dictated from above, and organizations perform better when that reality is embraced. Trust plays a central role in making that shift work. The group highlights the importance of two-way trust — leaders trusting their teams to make decisions, and teams trusting that their voices are heard and valued. Transparency has become a key part of that equation. More companies are opening up about performance, sharing financial context and helping employees understand how their work contributes to the bigger picture. Hiring and developing talent is another area where leadership is changing. Rather than focusing only on experience, these leaders are prioritizing qualities like curiosity, empathy, intelligence and a willingness to learn. Culture fit has become just as important as technical skill, if not more so. When hiring does not work out, the impact is felt across the team, reinforcing how critical it is to get those decisions right. Many are adapting by involving teams earlier in the hiring process and being more deliberate in how they evaluate candidates. The conversation also includes the complexity of leading modern print organizations. Hybrid work environments, multiple locations and varying roles across production and client-facing teams all create challenges in maintaining a unified culture. Through it all, these four leaders say, strong leadership is less about control and more about connection, clarity and creating the conditions for people to do their best work.

    The Roundtable: Sales, Marketing, Growth

Roundtable Participants: Kunal Chandaria, Founder and Managing Director, DPI Holdings, Kenya Helen Smith, Head of Marketing & ESG, Precision Proco, UK Philip Cooper, VP of Sales, Flash4, USA Growth looks different for every print business, but one theme surfaced repeatedly during this Dscoop Roundtable conversation on growth: The companies moving forward successfully are staying curious, adaptable and willing to evolve. This discussion brings together three leaders from different corners of the world — Kunal in Kenya, Helen in the UK and Philip in the USA — to explore how PSPs are thinking about sales, customer expectations, operational strategy and long-term business positioning. Throughout the conversation, the group acknowledges the pressure many businesses are feeling right now. Customers want faster turnaround times, more personalization and better digital experiences. AI and automation continue reshaping workflows and raising new questions about efficiency, staffing and competitiveness. Economic uncertainty also continues influencing how companies make investment decisions and think about risk. At the same time, the panelists express strong optimism about the opportunities ahead for companies willing to keep learning and experimenting. They highlight the importance of staying close to customers, listening carefully to changing needs and remaining flexible enough to adapt as technology and buying behavior evolve. Another takeaway from the session is the value of community and shared perspective. The panelists repeatedly reference the importance of learning from peers, hearing how others are navigating similar challenges and exposing themselves to new ideas outside their own organizations. Those kinds of conversations often help leaders recognize possibilities or blind spots they might not have identified on their own.
