Dumb Smart Mums

Abbey Suyker-Harrison and Charlotte Kells Robertson

Oh, HEY! Welcome to the Dumb Smart Mums podcast. The podcast where your hosts, Abbey and Charlotte, take you through everything and anything on the minds of contemporary mothers today. Equal parts silly and dumb, smart and insightful, but always evidence-based, accessible, and FUN. Each fortnight we'll don our respective social worker and academia caps, and cover different topics from momfluencers to feminist theory. We'll take you along as we figure out the answers around why motherhood is both the greatest and (sometimes) the worst thing we have ever experienced.

So editing Abbey tried her very best, but the sound towards the end of the ep is a bit funky. Aroha mai, but pls stick with us because the episode is a goodie. We know what the issue was, so it won't happen again! Thank you so much for being here and listening, it's blowing our damn minds every time. xoxoxoxo The two podcasts that Charlotte recommends are: - In Bed With The Right - the Natural Birth Movement episode - The Rest is History - the History of Childbirth Follow us on our social media to keep up with the behind the scenes chaos, images that were mentioned in today's topic, meme dumps, episode previews, and ongoing discussions: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dumbsmartmumspodcast/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@dumbsmartmumspod If you enjoy our work and would like to koha it, you can buy us a coffee here: https://buymeacoffee.com/dumbsmartmums See you in two weeks!!!!

Is Breastfeeding Biology or Witchcraft? (the 'Breast is Best' Episode)

This episode was sponsored by the absolute babes at CF Creations! If you're in the market for a mirror that is kiwi-manufactured without the mark ups, they're the place. Check out their full range at their website here. Use code DSM for 10% off at check out and THANK US LATER!! xoxo Well, well, well, look who dared to show their faces on the internet again for another episode. We were very nervous to share our opinions, so we thought what better way to do exposure therapy than tackling the 'breast is best' belief! We're so grateful for all the love, and follows, and comments, and reviews, and kind messages we got after the first episode, and we are just so excited to see where DSM goes from here. A huge shout out Dr Beth Shore who helped me with some of the biology details for this episode, go and check out her instagram here. She's the lady with non-judgemental, evidence-based lactation advice, and for that we are so grateful. Also, a very big thank you to my colleagues who helped me gather my thoughts for this episode. I promised not to name you, but I am so grateful for your wisdom. And just so, so thrilled that your patients navigating the minefield that is infant feeding are being carried so beautifully by you guys. Kylie Jenner Makes Us Feel Weird Feelings (the Celebrity Mums Episode)

This episode is proudly sponsored by The Mom Store! Go buy all the things! Thanks for your support, Mom Store team. 3 Well.. Hi there. I (Abbey) have done a terrible job at keeping the communication up with the big changes happening on this feed. So, if you don't follow me on social media and you're like "where is WDYPLT? what the heck is this?" surprise!!!! WDYPLT is dead. RIP. She was loved and great for a time in my life, but turns out when I went back to my job talking to parents about their parenting all day, the last thing I wanted to do was come home and talk to parents about their parenting. WDYPLT is much-treasured in my life, and the episodes will forever live on this feed, but when the idea for Dumb Smart Mums started knocking around between Charlotte and I, I knew it was the right move for me to evolve the pod feed as my life has evolved. I know this is a shock for some people, but stick with me! DSM is gonna be good. Charlotte kicks off our inaugural episode by teaching me about the huge impact that Celebrity Mums actually has on motherhood. Tangents include baby birkin bags, Kate Middleton being a benefits queen, and people really wanting us to regret having kids young. Buckle up, it's informative and goofy! Delivered piping hot to your ears! If you like this pod, could you do us a favour and share it with like 500 of your closest friends? We are eagerly awaiting finding our audience (we know your out there), and we can't wait to find the listeners that get it. So, if that's you and you reckon you've got people who would also get it, whyyyy not send this to them!? Kahurangi Carter (@kahucarter) on Young Motherhood, Two Under Two, Parenting as a Political Act, How Parenting Shaped Her Journey to Government, and Kids Being Their Own Person?

OH, we are so back! An honour to be back in this space for 2026, an even bigger honour for my first guest to be the gorgeous Kahurangi (Kahu) Carter (Ngāti Maniapoto, Tainui). Kahu is the Greens Party MP for Christchurch Central. Not only that, she is a mum of two. She had her first, Freddy (great name), and then 14 months later had Waiata! They are now 18 and 17. We cover so much in this episode, but we do get a lot into the nitty gritty of politics and how the current government is affecting the every day tangible difficulties that parents are facing. I am really proud of this platform, and being able to provide the opportunity for parents to hear who the parents are that are working hard to make this country better for us and our kids. Kahu is one of those people, and I hope you love this episode. You can find Kahu on instagram here and TikTok here.
