S02.19 The Street to Slow Train - Song & Dance Man Vol.2 Ch.1 with Micheal Gray

S02.19 The Street to Slow Train - Song & Dance Man Vol.2 Ch.1 with Micheal Gray

In this episode we talk with author Michael Gray about Chapter One of Volume 2 of Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan - Yonder Comes Sin, which was just released.

This is the Extended Version, available in the public feed until Dec. 1, 2023

Much of the discussion is about Street-Legal, and how that album revealed Dylan's evolving search for salvation - in a way that perhaps foreshadowed the gospel years much more clearly than anyone caught at the time.

S02 BONUS - Bob Talks #1: Studs Terkel's Wax Museum: A Bob Dylan Interview (5/1/63)

In our review of Mixing Up The Medicine we quoted Dylan from his 1963 radio appearance with Studs Terkel. It has inspired us to start what will likely be an occasional series of bonus episodes featuring some great old Dylan interviews - exclusively for FM+ and Premium Members.

This interview took place before The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan was released, and is one of the great early interviews.

You'll hear all of it here, although the ending rendition of 'Blowin In The Wind' is clipped in our copy, so it is omitted here.

S02.17 Dylan's Use of Pre-War Blues with Michael Gray

Nobody Else Can Be Influenced By The Pre-War Blues like Bob Dylan - or so says author Michael Gray in Chapter 8 in Song & Dance Man Vol.1 (The 50th Anniversary Edition). In 112 pages in that book he explains Dylan's relationship with the blues, which we discuss in this episode. Our Guest Reader for this episode is Scott Bunn of ReclinerNotes.com

** The Full Extended Version of this Episode is 45 Minutes long and available only to FM+ Subscribers. **

Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan was first released in 1972 in the UK, and 1973 in the US. It was updated twice before, in the early 80's and late 90's - eventually growing to over 900 pages. It's been loved by Dylan Scholars and fans for all these decades - The Observer (London) Said: "A mammoth work of scholarship, often enthralling and never less than illuminating." After over a decade out of print, is is being re-issued in three volumes for it's 50th Anniversary - with the full text and extensive footnotes of the Third Edition reproduced in full.

You can order Vol. 1 of the re-release series on Amazon in print or on kindle.

S02.16 Lay Down Your Weary Tune with Michael Gray

S02.16 Lay Down Your Weary Tune with Michael Gray

Only one song from Dylan's 1960s output earned a dedicated chapter in Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan (Vol.1), and it's a song that Dylan never even released until over 20 years later. In this episode we talk to Michael Gray about "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" (later released on Biograph in 1985 and later on Side Tracks).

The song is called out for special attention, because as Michael explains, it is unlike any other in Dylan's catalog before or since. We'll learn why in this episode. Selections from Chapter Six are read in this episode by Jim Salvucci, the host of The Dylantantes - another great podcast on The FM Podcast Network.

S02.15 Dylan Moves Toward Simplicity ('67 - '74) With Michael Gray

Following our two episodes on complexity in Dylan's lyrics, our discussion turns to the trend towards simplicity in the late 60's and early 70's work. This covers Chapter 5 in Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan (Vol.1) and includes comments on John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, New Morning, Self Portrait, Planet Waves and Blood On The Tracks.

We'll listen to passages from the book and then Michael comments, adds new thoughts, and answers questions. The selections for Chapter Five are read in this episode by Rob Kelly, the podcaster and host of Pod Dylan.

Dylan newbie

It took me decades to really get into Dylan and in my quest to learn more, I stumbled upon this podcast and substack that keeps me equally entertained and informed. Thank you for keeping all of the casual and hardcore Dylan fans learning from all different perspectives about this important icon!

A Valuable Addition to Dylan Podcasts

I listen to several podcasts having to do with Dylan. I especially appreciate those that delve deeply into his song lyrics as literature. This is my new fav Dylan podcast. It's 25th anniversary of TOOM and this podcast is beating all the rest in its episodes on this great album and it's significance in Dylan's career. The guests are all super knowledgeable and have added a great deal to my understanding of Dylan's work. Looking forward to more episodes.
