EACVI unpacked: Highlights of this year's imaging conference

With Emma Lane, Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust - UK, and Sarah Birkhoelzer, University Dorset Hospital, Bournemouth - UK. In this episode of EACVI Cardio Talk On-the-Go, Sarah Birkhoelzer and Emma Lane preview the highlights of the EACVI 2025 Congress, taking place in Vienna from 11 to 13 December.  The conversation explores why EACVI has become the leading international meeting for multimodality cardiovascular imaging and what attendees can expect from this year's expanded and redesigned programme. Sarah and Emma discuss the congress's evolution into a fully integrated imaging meeting, uniting echocardiography, CMR, CT, and nuclear cardiology. They introduce major new features—including the Imaging Training Hub, hands-on practical sessions, a stronger focus on AI, and an enhanced early-career and allied health track. They also highlight key sessions in echo, CMR, and CT, from tricuspid regurgitation and cardio-oncology to spectral CT, acute coronary syndromes, and cardiomyopathies. The episode emphasises EACVI's commitment to multidisciplinary learning, practical skill-building, and fostering connections across the imaging community. Whether you are a trainee, technologist, nurse, or experienced imager, Sarah and Emma make a compelling case that EACVI 2025 is the must-attend meeting for anyone shaping the future of cardiovascular imaging. Tune in for an engaging preview that will help you plan your visit—and inspire you to join the imaging community in Vienna this December.

  2. Advances in cardiovascular imaging - Ischaemia without obstruction: a false alarm?

Advances in cardiovascular imaging - Ischaemia without obstruction: a false alarm?

With Sarah Birkhoelzer, Oxford University Hospitals, Oxford - UK, and Edgar Argulian, Mount Sinai Morningside, New York - USA. In this episode, we explore a study by Edgar Argulian published in European Heart Journal – Imaging Methods and Practice (2025), which challenges the assumption that myocardial ischaemia on exercise echocardiography (ExE) is benign when coronary angiography shows no obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). The study retrospectively analysed 84 patients with exercise-induced ischaemia but no obstructive CAD, subdividing them into those with normal coronaries (iNC) and non-obstructive CAD (iNOCAD). Over a median 3.2-year follow-up, patients with ischaemia—especially those with iNC—faced significantly higher rates of acute chest pain and adverse cardiovascular outcomes compared to matched controls. Notably, women were overrepresented in the iNC group and were less likely to be on cardioprotective medications. The findings suggest that what has often been labelled as a "false positive" ExE may in fact reflect underlying microvascular dysfunction, endothelial abnormalities, or vasospasm—particularly in women. This study calls for more tailored evaluation, vigilant follow-up, and optimized treatment strategies in patients with symptomatic ischaemia despite "normal" angiograms. Tune in as we unpack the implications for clinical practice and why we should stop dismissing these findings as incidental. -
