    Kim Jaxon and The Next Right Thing

    Today on our podcast, Dr. Kim Jaxon shares the wisdom of the next right thing. How do we move forward together as a learning and teaching community when there are so many pressures and possibilities? How do we move with integrity?  Kim and I banter about public opinion around education, letting students lead the choice around technology tools, building student identity, and the power of a problem-based approach to teaching.     Peter Johnston: Bits of Teaching Wisdom

    Peter Johnston is one of my teaching mentors, a Bright Spot whose words and ideas reach beyond the classroom into the way I see the world, my kids, my friends. I'm thrilled that he agreed to answer questions and muse with me about the state of teaching and learning. Dr. Johnston is currently Professor Emeritus at the University of Albany in New York. His long career of teaching, researching, and noticing has led to countless publications, awards, and conversations around building intellectually healthy classrooms, which, he believes, won’t be achieved without socially and emotionally healthy students. His newest book, co-authored with six remarkable classroom teachers is called Engaging Literate Minds, K-3: Literacy Teaching That Grows Children’s Social, Emotional, and Intellectual Lives. Peter and I talk about the importance of imagination, noticing, equity, and community. We talk about teachers and learners who pursue justice in the world because, perhaps, they learned to care about each other in the classroom.     Matt Townsley and Standards Based Grading

    Today in our podcast, Dr. Matt Townsley shares experiences shifting his practice to standards based and mastery teaching principles. The former middle school math teacher is now Assistant Professor at Northern Iowa University who teaches and researches topics around educational leadership. His new book, Making Grades Matter, released this year, and is a treasure of resources for building a standards based community. My time with Matt felt like going to church! His experience and expertise rolls as stories and analogies that invite listeners to understand important shifts in assessment. Matt’s energy is infectious, and he explains the moves he makes around learning in a way that makes them accessible and exciting.     Ryan Mallo and Managing Stress

    Dr. Ryan Mallo shares practical ways to manage new stresses we are all experiencing. He is compassionate, funny, and he GETS it. He knows that teachers are also dads and moms and partners and friends. Ryan holds advanced degrees in both nursing and educational leadership. He is a teacher and a medical health provider, which gives him a unique perspective into the lives and stressors on teachers. Ryan talks today about more than medicine.
