Ep. 4 Mental Health Challenges as a Student-Athlete with Mikaela Brewer

Ep. 4 Mental Health Challenges as a Student-Athlete with Mikaela Brewer

In recent times, we are hearing and seeing of more student-athletes take their lives at such a young age. Why is this happening? What is the cause of this? Is there anything that can be done to reduce the amount of suicide rates within college student-athletes?

Mikaela Brewer was a women's basketball star from Barrie, Canada who played for the University of Standford. She had been playing basketball since she was a child and had been able to channel her passion for the sport into something that allowed her to succeed in college, as well as in life.

In this interview with Mikaela, we talked about how she dealt with pressures of college sports and the mental aspect that comes with it which people do not talk about.

Mikaela explained that one of the main reasons why people do not talk about mental health is because it is such a taboo topic in society today. She said that people are afraid to open up about their own struggles or admit they have them because they don't want others to think less of them or judge them negatively.

However, Mikaela believes that talking about these issues will help make things better in society overall because then people will be more willing to seek out help when they need it rather than suffer alone in silence.
