Empowered Communication

Meredith Holley and Megan Mellin talk candidly about toxic workplace environments that we all need to hear and be reminded of regularly. The examples and approach to address toxic workplace environments are drawn from the target’s perspective. In the first episode Meredith explained how empowered she felt to object to inappropriate behavior once management took steps to address it. Everyone ever observing toxic activity can learn from that. As a 60-year old white male I have and will never know a target’s oppression, but I have observed many toxins over my career. As a young man I was hesitant to speak out on behalf of colleagues and today I remind anyone reading this not to hesitate. Reflecting on what it takes to speak up as an observer can’t begin to compare with the pressure to object as a target. Silence and gossip/bragging empower the insidiousness of toxins. The Empowered Communication podcast is real and tangible, it isn’t anything like the ineffective sensitivity training that my various employers have put on over the years. I’ll be a regular listener and encourage others, especially men, to listen too. And if you hear a behavior that exists in your environment, speak to it to start the change.
