    Cinderella CEO On Air Podcast Host Cary Broussard interviews Charlotte Gustavsson about her experiences, opportunities, and challenges of serving on boards of directors and the benefits of those who find women board members. Their conversation touches briefly on the difference between Sweden and United States efforts to see more women serving on boards – Cary and Charlotte met through a networking organization called Liberty Ventures. Cary and Charlotte discuss the huge benefits of having diverse boards, backed up by lots of research. The key is to bring different people together with different perspectives, on top of the key skills needed to lead the strategic work of a company. But leading a diverse board is no walk in the park - a chairman that can read the room and let board members contribute properly is the key to success. Lack of women, lack of diversified boards in general run a higher risk of missing out on new business opportunities and identification of trends, according to Charlotte. The board mandates are so much more complex in these turbulent times, so board leaders need to factor in geopolitics, extreme weather, secure supply chains, new trends, new generations with new values - all factors that support the need for diverse board members. Charlotte began her career in Corporate Finance & M&A before moving into media, where she got her first opportunity as a CEO at 31 years of age.  Charlotte grew Viasat1 (part of Modern Times Group) to become one of Ghana’s top TV stations, securing Premier League rights and launching multiple local productions.  Cary and Charlotte also discuss her career in professional sports. Charlotte served as CEO of two (2) top-tier Swedish ice hockey clubs (in SHL), MoDo Hockey and Karlskrona Hockeyklubb. Charlotte was subjected to some public scrutiny during her years in professional sports, and shares lessons learned in her conversation with Cary. Cary jokes that Charlotte reminds her of the character Rebecca Welton, (played by actress Hannah Waddington), the owner of AFC Richmond, on  Apple TV's  Ted Lasso – delving into how hockey and sports can be the foundation for a successful board service role!     Organizations like Women In Trucking (WIT) have helped normalize trucking as a viable, rewarding career path for women. Podcast host Cary Broussard interviews the founder of Women in Trucking Ellen Voie (pronounced Vo-ya) about her new book From Dispatcher to Disruptor - One Woman's Journey to Drive Gender Diversity in the Trucking Industry Cary and Ellen met during the inaugural Cinderella to CEO Awards - Ellen was the grand prize winner among 200 other nominees. The audience heard from all the award finalists and voted Ellen as the top winner for her work building a more inclusive workplace (read more about her award in Chapter 10 of her book).  Ellen's story is inspirational! She talks with Cary about the risks she takes and what fun she has had building the 80,000 member, global organization Women in Trucking.  As a result, women are helping redefine trucking from a “rough, male-only” field to one that values professionalism, safety, diversity, and innovation. Their growing presence is making the industry more sustainable and attractive to the next generation of workers.  Companies that recruit and retain women drivers often see improvements in workplace culture, safety records, and overall employee retention.     Statistics show that only 32% of fourth graders across the country can read proficiently on average, and students in marginalized communities have much less reading comprehension than their peers.  Podcast host Cary Broussard met Alicia Mitchell while volunteering with the nonprofit organization Reading Partners, which provides one-on-one tutoring sessions to strengthen phonemic awareness in elementary school children. Cary interviews Alicia about her experiences as a tutor and how she has overcome adversity and obstacles in her own life. Alicia grew up being her own best advocate.     Lupe Valdez became the first Latina Sheriff in the United States, and one of the first LGBTQ women to hold such a role in 2004. As Sheriff of Dallas County, Lupe managed the seventh-largest Sheriff's department in the country for 13 years. Now she's running again for the seat she left in 2018 when she left to run for Governor of Texas. Cary Broussard interviews Lupe Valdez about why she wants to be Sheriff of Dallas County again and why the role of Sheriff is important in every community. Cary asks Lupe why it's important for women to run for office, what obstacles women face and how they can succeed. There is a brief introduction from actor John Leguizamo who describes how Lupe grew up poor with parents who were migrant workers, how her teacher inspired her and Lupe worked her way through college and graduate school, eventually joining the Army, rising to rank of Captain. Lupe Valdez went on to a 30-year career as a federal agent for US Customs and Border Protection and then the Department of Homeland Security, focusing on fraud and drug cases. FInally, she made history as the first openly LGBTQ Latina sheriff in the nation. During her tenure as Sheriff, Valdez addressed understaffing, overpopulation, and unsanitary conditions in the county jail and improved care for mentally ill inmates.
