    EP050 — It Decides Before It Stops Talking (Commitment Boundary)

    When a reasoning model 'thinks out loud,' it usually locks onto its final answer at a sharp, detectable point — a commitment boundary — often in a single step and well before the reasoning block ends. The steps it writes after that point are epiphenomenal: they leave the answer unchanged, and a small internal probe can spot the boundary and cut the reasoning short — reportedly by more than half — with almost no loss in accuracy. It matters because monitoring a model's chain of thought for safety may be reading theater: the tokens that actually decided the answer are upstream of where oversight tends to look, and nothing on the surface marks the switch.     Bioacoustics — monitoring animals by the sounds they make — now has a whole shelf of pretrained AI models, but each one wants its audio in a different format and returns differently shaped outputs, so comparing them or swapping one for another is expensive manual work. bacpipe, an open tool from the bioacoustic-AI community, wraps many of these models behind one standard interface plus a shared evaluation layer, so an ecologist can point any of them at the same recordings and measure them head-to-head. The catch is the deep one: standardizing the plumbing doesn't standardize what the models do inside — two models can take the same audio, produce same-shaped outputs, and score identically on a test while having organized the sound in structurally different ways. ConflictRAG treats contradiction among sources as a first-class problem: it detects a conflict, classifies what kind it is (your-memory-versus-the-book, or book-versus-book), and resolves it by ranking each source's credibility from the data rather than from a hand-written rule. We tell it through the historian's method of source criticism — Lorenzo Valla exposing the Donation of Constantine as a forgery in 1440 from the Latin alone — and the place the analogy breaks: a historian is allowed to conclude 'we cannot know,' while a system built to resolve-before-answering may manufacture false certainty on exactly the questions where honesty matters most.
