Essential Guide to Writing a Novel

I’m nine episodes in, and honestly, it feels like slipping into an old-school Novel Writing 101 lecture where the professor actually likes teaching. Thayer is organized, generous with examples, and somehow pulls off a charming faux-modesty that gives the whole thing a warm, gently humorous vibe. Full confession: I’ve never written a novel, and now I’m trying to write one. (Don’t laugh. Or do. It’s fine.) There are countless writing resources out there—some ramble, some are drowning in self-promo, and others lack, shall we say, structural hygiene. Thayer’s podcast is refreshingly tidy. That said, I get anxious listening for two reasons. First, he gives “before and after” samples of writing. While I’m reasonably confident I can outdo many of the “befores,” I’m hopeful—but not delusional—about matching the “afters.” Second, each episode is crammed with great material, and I have no earthly clue how I’m supposed to remember it all when I finally sit down to hammer out my own story. Still, I appreciate his effort, his teaching style, and the craftsmanship behind the show. But one thing I know for certain: I will never-ever-ever buy his books about the early lives of Dickens’s characters, because… well, life is too darned short. #IJS
