    The Night the Sixth Seal Changed My View of the Rapture: Settling the Rapture Debate-Two Years Later

    Revelation 6 describes the stars of heaven falling to the earth the way unripe figs are shaken loose by a mighty wind (Revelation 6:13). When you read those stars as divine beings cast down from their place of authority, rather than natural phenomena like a meteor shower, the sixth seal can be seen to connect with the war in heaven in Revelation 12, where the dragon and his angels are thrown down to the earth. Many premillennial interpreters place that war at the midpoint of the seven years. If the two passages describe the same event, then the people hiding from the face of the one on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb (Revelation 6:12–17) are seeing Christ's coming at the midpoint.     Two People I Met in Saudi Arabia on October 7, 2023: The Story Behind Settling the Rapture Debate

    In October 2023, a month into writing Settling the Rapture Debate, I joined a small expedition in northwest Saudi Arabia to the site many now identify as the biblical Mount Sinai. On the morning we set out I climbed into a Jeep (it was actually a Toyota Land-Cruiser, but we called it a Jeep) with two women from Hong Kong I had barely spoken to at dinner the night before. We rode together for five days. The conversations in that Jeep came to somewhere around thirteen or fourteen hours, and they kept going after the trip ended — over the following year, by Zoom, they passed a hundred.Nancy and Vicky read the book as it was being written, and their questions and feedback shaped how I said things. This week I asked them to tell the story from their side, and they did.

    Cherubim and the Way Back

    There's a detail in the temple that almost nobody stops on — and once you see what it's doing, you can't unsee it.In Genesis 3:24, after the fall, God places cherubim at the east of the garden to guard the way back to the tree of life. Most readers notice that. Far fewer notice that Scripture brings those same beings back — not only in gold over the ark of the covenant, but woven into the very curtain that hangs at the threshold of the Most Holy Place.This episode traces one of the cleanest examples of how Scripture's imagery actually works: a single thread, followed from Eden through Sinai through Solomon's temple to the moment Matthew, Mark, and Luke describe the curtain of the temple torn in two at the cross. The torn veil isn't a stray detail. It's the destination Scripture had been walking toward for thousands of years.

    Gods and Their Temples in the Ancient World

    We tend to read the word temple as a physical building — Solomon's, the one Jesus cleansed, some think a future one. But by the time the Bible reaches any of those buildings, the word is already old. The first temple shows up on the very first page of Genesis — and it has no walls at all.This is the foundation of a series on how Scripture speaks in images. We start where the ancient world started: every culture built a house for its god. We look at what a temple actually was to them — and how different that is from a place of worship today. Then we read Genesis 1 the way it was written: as the inauguration of the world as God's temple, with a garden for its holy of holies and the first human placed in it as a priest.I have a chart of where Scripture is going, and I'd love for you to arrive at it. But a destination only becomes truly yours when you've traveled to it by reading Scripture to it. So more than the chart, what I teach is the way of reading that gets you there.
