How to Declutter for ADHD Minds: From Overwhelm to Home Clarity

I’m Diana, host of Even The Dog Has ADHD, and this first conversation of Season Two is with professional organiser and KonMari consultant Caroline Thor. She supports neurodivergent families to create homes that truly work for their brains, homes that feel calm, functional, and kind.If you’ve ever looked around and thought, it’s not the mess, it’s me, this episode will remind you it isn’t. Clutter isn’t laziness; it’s overload. Together we explore the emotional weight of our environments, how ADHD and autism shape the way we use space, and why letting go — physically and emotionally — can make room for peace and presence. In this episode we talk about:• Why clutter builds when our brains are already overloaded• How clutter can significantly impact family dynamics and emotional well-being• The link between shame, sensory needs, and home life• Why the KonMari method is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and how to personalise it• Decluttering as an ongoing process rather than a one-time event• How letting go of items with gratitude can ease the emotional burden of decluttering• The importance of understanding executive dysfunction for effective organisation• Creating realistic routines to manage household tasks with less stress• How emotional attachments to items can complicate the process• The role of community support in providing accountability and encouragement• Why mindset shifts are essential for lasting change• How starting small can lead to significant changes over time• And why “put the damn thing away” became Caroline’s favourite form of self-careFind out more about my beautiful WONDERLAND program that I designed for neurodivergent minds and for the deep feelers and thinkers. https://eventhedoghasadhd.com/work-with-me. Navigating Neurodivergence with ADHD and Dyslexia

In this episode, Cara shares her journey of growing up with undiagnosed ADHD and dyslexia. She describes her childhood experiences of frustration, dysregulation, and struggling with learning. As an adult, Cara pursued a career in psychology and worked in various roles related to community safety and social care. She also discovered her own neurodivergence and pursued a diagnosis of ADHD. Cara's journey was further complicated by her husband's diagnosis of young onset Alzheimer's and her own health scare. Despite these challenges, Cara remained resilient and pursued further education, including a coaching course and exploration of a PhD. In this conversation, Cara Langford Watts shares her journey of becoming a coach and pursuing a PhD while navigating personal challenges. She discusses the importance of credibility and the desire for academic qualifications. Cara also explores the difference between coaching and counselling, emphasising the need for practical strategies for neurodivergent individuals. She highlights the systemic issues faced by neurodivergent individuals and the need for societal change. Additionally, Cara discusses the role of coaching in the workplace and the availability of funding through programs like Access to Work.Takeaways Childhood experiences of frustration and dysregulation can be indicators of neurodivergence. Undiagnosed neurodivergence can lead to challenges in education and learning. Supportive parents and access to specialized tutoring can make a significant difference in a child's educational journey. Adults with neurodivergence may have to navigate multiple career paths and face challenges in pursuing their desired profession. Life's challenges can inspire personal growth and lead to new opportunities. Coaching and counselling serve different purposes, with coaching focusing on practical strategies and counselling addressing deeper emotions. The coaching field needs to evolve to better support neurodivergent individuals and address systemic barriers. Access to Work and other funding programs can provide support for coaching and mentoring in the workplace.
