Scottish Myths & Legends - Nessie, Kelpies, Faeries & Things That Go Bump in the Loch

Lesley Kennedy wears a silver kelpie pendant every day. A kelpie is a shape-shifting water horse that will drag you into a loch and drown you, leaving only your liver on the bank, and Lesley has thoughts about the liver specifically. Most tour guests who notice the pendant have questions. Some reassess their choice of guide. She stands by it entirely, on the grounds that the kelpie deserves better than a gift shop fridge magnet. In Episode Nine, promised since Episode One, delayed by the Tartan Army's invasion of America, and finally here, Scotland's myths and legends get the serious, enthusiastic, only slightly sceptical treatment they deserve. This episode also tells the real story behind the Kelpies at Falkirk, two of Scotland's most visited attractions, including the Clydesdale horses that worked the canals in the area for generations, and why the name Kelpies was chosen to represent the transformation of the landscape. If you have visited the Kelpies and wondered what they actually mean, this is the episode to listen to first. Also in this episode: Nessie, honestly assessed by someone who has stood at the edge of Loch Ness and genuinely doesn't know, with thoughts on the eel theory. The Scottish faeries: not the wings-and-flowers kind, the ancient terrifying Seelie and Unseelie kind with a very specific attitude toward human children and road construction. The Brownies: small, scruffy, will do your housework for free, do not give them a wee jacket. The Baobhan Sith: Scotland's vampire women with deer hooves. The Bean-Nighe: the death-omen washer and the tactical opportunity she presents if you move quickly. The Wulver: a wolf-man philanthropist from Shetland who deserves considerably more recognition than he gets. The Blue Men of the Minch: sea creatures who will drown you via unfinished poetry, which is either the most Scottish or the most alarming thing in this episode, possibly both. And the Nuckelavee: which has no skin, comes from Orkney, and which you are about to find out about whether you are ready or not. Our Scots Word of the Week: Eerie.
