Sustainability Time

Todd Francis

Sustainability is about the world we share and not just the commitment we make to supporting a better environment. It is about what we do to sustain ourselves, our communities, our society, our culture, our institutions and our future. Sustainability Time asks a central question about us: What is the natural thread that connects the many pieces of our civilization? Do we recognize what binds our challenges to a single frame? Real life doesn't arrive in separate categories. Still, we attack our problems one by one and try to make a difference. We are resourceful and accomplish many of our goals in society. On the other hand, often, we diminish important parts of our problems as we try to solve them—and lose sight of what we are actually trying to fix. We should always remember that people aren't simply consumers of resources. We are creators of value—and society's greatest resource. Economics, technology, government and natural resources matter, but so do compassion, creativity, integrity, experience, friendship, resilience, cooperation and time. So, on this podcast, it is time for us to assess and tackle our goal: full sustainability and resilience—the things that ultimately matter. Sustainability is about constructive vitality: developing healthier people, stronger relationships, resilient communities, responsible institutions and a natural world capable of supporting generations still to come. Resilience is all of this supported by continuity and stability, laying the groundwork for opportunity and quality of life for all—which is part of the fundamental value of sustainability itself. There won't always be easy answers. We have unexpected tangents to follow. Tall cliffs to dive from. Walls to drive straight through without stopping. Ultimately, sustainability is about the air we'd like to breathe and the lives we'd like to live. We have problems to wrestle with, and separate ideals and ideas to wrestle into one. This is part of life's journey. We must lead the way. Proper valuation is the key to all things sustainable. Proper valuation is the freedom we keep in our hearts right now and the consciousness we care to share with others. As we learn to recognize our own value, the value of others and our place within the greater society, perhaps we move a little closer to becoming sustainable beings – supporting growth within humanity, supporting growth within ourselves. Sustainability is love. Sustainability is life. Sustainability is one of the human race's most essential spiritual values. Join us on this long and winding road. It is only life we are chasing, after all. #Sustainability #SustainabilityTime #SocialSustainability #HumanSustainability #SustainableFuture #EnvironmentalScience #EnvironmentalJustice #MentalHealth #PeerSupport #HumanDevelopment #Resilience #SocialImpact #Community #QualityOfLife #FutureGenerations #SustainableLiving

    Sustainability and Mass Incarceration

What does the food served inside an American prison tell us about the society outside of it? In this episode of Sustainability Time, we begin with incarceration and follow the question much further. We examine prison food and punishment in the extraordinary human environment created when large numbers of people with very different histories, offenses and needs are confined together. We also confront the difficult question that can get lost in criticism of mass incarceration: if we substantially change the system, what do we do for and with the people already inside it? Some have been institutionalized for decades. Some have been profoundly harmed. Some have profoundly harmed others. Some may remain dangerous. Others may be capable of returning to society and contributing to it. Reform has to deal honestly with all of them. But prison doesn't exist separately from society. Our journey takes us through childhood development, abuse, mental health, housing, food access, healthcare, poverty, homelessness, employment and economic insecurity. We consider the role that chronic survival fear can play in people's lives—and what happens when society waits until human problems have become extraordinarily difficult and expensive before seriously addressing them. Along the way, we question something even larger: how does society determine value? If our economic and political systems count the cost of helping someone but fail to count the cost of allowing that person's human capacity to deteriorate, perhaps our accounting is incomplete. Real life doesn't arrive in separate categories. Neither do the causes and consequences of incarceration. This is a conversation about punishment and compassion, victims and offenders, responsibility and development, fear and freedom—and ultimately about what a sustainable society should be trying to produce in its people. Because perhaps the purpose of corrections shouldn't simply be deciding how long someone must remain behind a wall. Perhaps it should also be helping a human being find their way back.
