    251 - I Found My Oura Ring… Then I Won a Last-Minute Trip to Dallas

Sometimes the best opportunities happen when you stop overthinking and simply **shoot your shot**. Amy starts this Twisted Tuesday walk-and-talk with some good news: her missing Oura Ring was found. But after spending several days without it, she’s looking at wearable tracking differently. Instead of obsessing over daily scores, Amy wants to focus on the information that actually helps her—especially menstrual and temperature trends as she approaches menopause. Then the story takes an unexpected turn. After receiving a last-chance email offering tickets to a live social-media growth event, Amy decided to reply and explain why she should be there. She had a feeling she was going to win. Two hours later, she was in. Now she has four days to prepare for Dallas while juggling immunotherapy, work, family and the logistics of a completely last-minute trip. And then comes another surprise: Amy and her husband discover that an old Marriott Bonvoy account connected to their business American Express card has accumulated **more than 3 million points**—enough to make the spontaneous trip considerably easier. But underneath the funny stories is something bigger. Amy admits that after experiencing burnout and a lull with social media, simply showing up consistently isn't enough anymore. She wants to learn the strategy behind reaching new people, then put two decades of experience in health, fitness, coaching, personal growth and chasing her best self back into the world. This episode is about taking the chance, keeping promises to yourself, learning the skills you’re missing and being willing to show up again—even when you don't have everything figured out. 250 — Twisted Tuesdays: When Everything Goes Sideways - Hair Day, Tech Problems & Learning to Adapt

Sometimes the smallest things can completely change the direction of your day. In this Twisted Tuesday episode, Amy keeps things casual and real, starting with the unexpected excitement of “hair day.” After Leilani carefully plans around schedules, rides, and appointments to see her favorite stylist, a last-minute case of food poisoning throws the entire plan off. But the cancellation unexpectedly opens another door—and suddenly Amy gets her own long-awaited haircut too. The conversation then shifts from a surprisingly good change of plans to the exact opposite: a technology nightmare. After years with an aging MacBook, Amy gets a new computer and initially thinks the migration has gone perfectly. Then she tries to open Excel. What follows is more than three hours of Microsoft 365 login problems, license errors, multiple email accounts, reinstallations, troubleshooting, ChatGPT, Claude, and finally the discovery that she has run straight into a known technical glitch. Instead of simply ranting about technology, Amy connects the frustration to something bigger: how we respond when things don't work, the challenge of learning new skills as we get older, and the importance of recognizing when frustration is taking over. She also shares what she's hearing from women in their 40s and 50s who have spent years putting their children, spouses, careers, and everyone else ahead of themselves. Eventually, neglecting your own health can start showing up in ways that go far beyond appearance—including blood pressure and A1C markers. The answer doesn't always have to begin with a massive transformation. Sometimes it starts with a walk. This episode is a reminder that plans change, technology fails, frustration happens, and some problems simply cannot be solved immediately. Take the deep breath. Get some movement. Work on what you can control. Then come back and try again. Thank you for being here — whether this is your first episode or you’ve been with me since Episode 1. We’re not chasing perfect. 249 - Are Your Tracking Devices Hurting You?

Two days ago I lost my Aura ring at the gym, and I still haven't found it. That sent me down a rabbit hole I've actually been in for years, on and off, with every tracking device I've ever owned. The body bug, a few different Polar heart rate monitors, the Whoop, and now the ring I've had since before Aura was even really a thing. In this episode I'm thinking out loud about the real pros and cons of wearing one of these, including a confession I'm not totally proud of, a stretch where I caught myself gaming my own readiness score just to watch the number climb. I also get into why I have consistently high daytime stress readings, what that's actually rooted in, and a client story about a glucometer that shows exactly how a tracking device should be used, for a season, to build real conviction, not forever. I don't land on an answer for whether I'm buying a new one. If you've ever had a love-hate relationship with your own tracker, I think you'll relate to this one.   Thank you for being here — whether this is your first episode or you’ve been with me since Episode 1. 248 - Twisted Tuesdays: Why Your Healthy Habits Fall Apart When Your Routine Changes

Are you really inconsistent—or did the structure supporting your healthy habits disappear? After nearly three weeks away from training because of a painful back injury, Amy notices something surprising: despite being committed to drinking enough water, she keeps reaching the evening without meeting her hydration goal. The problem isn’t a lack of desire or discipline. One of the checkpoints built into her training routine is suddenly gone. Amy explains why habits often begin unraveling when our schedules change, why weekends can feel much harder than weekdays, and how simple environmental cues, alarms, and checkpoints can restore consistency without relying on willpower. She also walks listeners through her weekly review process, including how she assesses her mornings, productivity, nutrition, evening routine, fatigue, pain, and recurring behavioral patterns. Instead of hoping next week will be better, she identifies a specific problem and selects a strategy to test. The episode also explores HRT and the importance of finding a provider who considers symptoms alongside laboratory results, plus Amy’s 28-day metabolic readiness test designed to help women determine whether their bodies are responsive to a consistent calorie deficit. If your habits seem to disappear whenever your schedule, health, or environment changes, this episode will help you stop blaming yourself and start rebuilding the structure that makes consistency possible. Main episode points: Why Amy began struggling with water after nearly three weeks away from training How daily checkpoints can make hydration and other behaviors more automatic Why healthy habits frequently fall apart on weekends What to do when a familiar habit cue disappears Using reminders and alarms as temporary replacement cues Why changing circumstances require changing habit structures Amy’s experience with HRT, testosterone, and symptom-based medical care Reactive versus responsive bodies during a controlled calorie deficit Why consistency should be evaluated before assuming the metabolism is broken How Amy performs a weekly personal review while walking Distinguishing productive work from busy work Using strategic naps to manage cancer-related fatigueIdentifying recurring patterns involving exhaustion, nutrition, and overwhelm Creating a testable strategy instead of hoping for improvement Continuing to honor commitments while experiencing significant pain   Thank you for being here — whether this is your first episode or you’ve been with me since Episode 1. 247 - The 5 People Quietly Shaping Your Body, Habits, and Health

Amy went in for routine blood work and walked out with an episode idea after seeing something she could not ignore: a newer phlebotomist had seemingly begun to look, move, and behave like the fit, health-conscious women around her. That real-time change becomes the starting point for a bigger question—how much of your own behavior is being shaped by the people closest to you?   In this episode, Amy explores the idea that “you are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with,” applying it directly to health, fitness, weight loss, and identity. She discusses research on social networks and obesity, the role of social support in long-term success, and why proximity can quietly recalibrate your standards for workouts, food choices, weekends, stress, and consistency.   Most importantly, Amy challenges you to audit your own five. Are the people around you reinforcing the identity you are trying to build—or the one you are trying to leave behind? This is not about cutting people out of your life. It is about intentionally adding relationships, communities, and environments that make your desired habits feel more normal and require less reliance on willpower.     Main points of the episode: Amy sees a dramatic real-life example of environmental influence when a newer employee at her blood lab begins adopting the fitness culture of the women around her. The “five people” principle is usually discussed in relation to money or mindset, but Amy argues that it applies just as strongly to bodies, health, fitness, and daily behavior. Amy references long-term social-network research showing that health and weight patterns can cluster through social relationships, illustrating how powerful proximity and social norms can be. Social support can make behavior change easier because your definition of “normal” begins to shift—what you eat, whether you exercise, how you handle weekends, and how you respond to stress. Negative influence can work the same way. Skipped workouts, unplanned meals, all-or-nothing eating, drinking habits, and giving up early can become defaults simply because they are repeatedly modeled around you. Amy encourages listeners to audit the people who have the most influence during vulnerable decision points such as lunch, the drive home, evenings, weekends, and moments of temptation.   The goal is not necessarily to remove friends, spouses, parents, or coworkers. Instead, intentionally add at least one relationship or community that reinforces the direction you want to go. The episode closes with a challenge to find your tribe so healthy behavior becomes an easier normal rather than something you must force through willpower alone. 246 - Twisted Tuesdays: When Ego Gets You Injured - The Discipline to Adapt

What happens when you're finally in a great fitness groove—and one injury suddenly takes it away?   In this Twisted Tuesday episode, Amy walks through an honest weekly self-audit that becomes a much bigger lesson about discipline, ego, setbacks, and staying aligned with the person you want to be. After experiencing significant back pain following a leg workout, Amy learns she'll be out of the gym for several weeks. Looking back, she recognizes something uncomfortable: although she knew heavy squatting might no longer offer the risk-to-reward tradeoff she wanted, training alongside her daughter made it tempting to keep pushing and getting stronger. Now she's dealing with the consequences. But the injury becomes another test. Rather than allowing something she can't control to dominate everything else, Amy discusses redirecting attention toward her daily agreements and the areas of life she can control. She also opens up about how persistent pain can affect your mood and mental state—and how intentionally managing her thoughts reminded her of lessons she learned while dealing with chemotherapy-related fatigue. Amy also gives an update on her metabolic improvement journey, including intentional maintenance phases, her recent calorie deficit, losing roughly four and a half pounds over approximately six weeks, and why the process has felt surprisingly manageable compared with previous approaches.   Ultimately, the episode comes back to a deceptively simple truth: achieving results doesn't eliminate the work that created them. The meal prep, daily agreements, reflection, training, intentional choices, and repetitive habits may eventually feel boring—but they're also what got you there. And if you want to stay there, you still have to do the boring work. 00:25 — Amy's weekly self-audit. Amy walks through how she evaluates her mornings, workday, evenings, nutrition, training, and relationships instead of judging the entire week as simply good or bad. 04:13 — The donut that technically didn't break the rules. Amy examines why eating half a donut still felt like a loss even though it technically fit the agreement she'd written for herself. The lesson becomes one of internal alignment rather than finding loopholes in your own rules. 08:40 — The injury. After a leg workout that felt completely normal, significant pain develops later. Amy eventually learns she'll be away from the gym for several weeks. 09:52 — Risk versus reward changes over time. Amy reflects on heavy squatting and whether the potential benefit still justifies the risk for her. 10:32 — Training with ego has consequences. Amy admits that training with her 23-year-old daughter contributed to her desire to continue squatting and getting stronger even though she already believed it should no longer be part of her training. 11:35 — Relationships belong in the audit too. Amy recognizes that when she's busy or struggling, she tends to isolate rather than connect with friends. 12:44 — The psychological side of injury. More than a week later, Amy is still dealing with substantial pain and discusses intentionally preventing it from dominating her thoughts and mood. 14:46 — Why maintenance phases matter. Amy discusses what she's learned about intentional maintenance and metabolic improvement after years of working with Eric. 16:43 — Four and a half pounds without an extreme deficit. Amy explains that after bringing her calories up, she's lost roughly four and a half pounds across approximately six weeks while eating around 1,890 calories. 19:58 — Never underestimate the boring work. Amy closes with the larger lesson: the ordinary daily practices people become tired of doing are often exactly what created their results in the first place. 245 - How to Avoid Accidental Maintenance

If your goal has been fat loss for months, but the scale keeps landing in the exact same 5 pound range, this episode is about the gap between those two things.   I call it accidental maintenance.   Your intention is fat loss… but working hard all week and loose all weekend adds up to the exact same static outcome as an intentional maintenance phase, minus every benefit that phase is actually supposed to give your body. I recorded this one from a live coaching call inside Look Like You Train, because I think almost everyone listening has spent time here.   In this episode I walk through the four places accidental maintenance actually lives. Your mindset, and why the identity work has to come before the meal plan. Your systems, promise-keeping, biweekly check-ins, and a real plan for the meals that fall outside your routine. Your environment, and what the research says about willpower versus a room that's already working against you. And the practical leaks nobody talks about, compensatory eating, alcohol, sleep, and recalibrating your calories as you actually lose, not on a fixed schedule.   I'm also sharing some of the research that convicted me while I was prepping this one, including a stat that stopped me in my tracks, people underreport what they actually eat by an average of 47 percent. If you've been doing everything and still not seeing it move, this episode is for you.     Thank you for being here — whether this is your first episode or you’ve been with me since Episode 1. 244 - Twisted Tuesdays: Stop Lying to Yourself - The Weekly Audit That Exposes Where You’re Really Stuck

It’s easy to tell yourself you’re doing fine. It’s harder to look in the accountability mirror and actually measure it. In this Twisted Tuesday, Amy breaks down the weekly audit she uses to assess whether her actions are aligned with the person she wants to be. She explains why tracking your behavior matters, how seemingly small broken promises can affect your confidence and “self-love meter,” and why difficult seasons are exactly when maintaining a few core habits becomes most important.   Amy walks through the areas she evaluates each week: her morning routine, daytime productivity, evening habits, nutrition, training and movement, weekends, and relationships. Rather than relying on vague feelings about whether the week was “good” or “bad,” she assigns numbers based on what actually happened and looks more closely at anything that needs improvement.   The real lesson is what happens next. If you discover you’re repeatedly hitting snooze, wasting time, falling off your nutrition plan, neglecting relationships, or abandoning your routine when life gets difficult, simply promising to “try harder” isn’t a strategy. Amy challenges you to identify the real tripwire and put a specific solution in place.   For Amy, this process reaches far beyond productivity. Staying aligned helps her mentally and physically show up for one of the biggest battles of her life: fighting cancer. She argues that when one part of life starts slipping, it can affect how you show up everywhere else.   If you’ve been feeling stagnant, inconsistent, frustrated with yourself, or stuck in the cycle of saying, “I’ll do better next week,” this episode gives you a simple framework for replacing judgment with data—and data with action.
