“Fake It Until You Make It, Dreams and Pitfalls of the Fashion Industry” is a podcast aiming to take an honest look at the fashion designer career and discover how and what it means to make it in the fashion industry. Hosted by the fashion designer Marie Schaller, they offer a safe space for fashion professionals at all stages of their careers to discuss their journey. It asks them to reflect on this idea of making it in the fashion industry, what it means for them, and what the cost of it is. Owning up to my own ignorance in the matter, this podcast is an investigation, inviting through various testimonials and archives to create a common understanding of the reality of this career and industry. What is the reality of fashion school? How do you become an Art director? Where do you get funding to start your brand? Who is paid? How do you get paid for your work? And at what stage of their career?  Stepping away from the dreamy fashion biopic, promotional podcast and curated Instagram content, this podcast aims to help the general public better understand the reality behind the industry of the dream, break the law of silence to help people in the industry thrive collectively and to bring tools to younger generations to better navigate this industry and change it for the better. With their work being showcased at the V&A South and their recent prize with the Institute of Digital Fashion, they will reflect on their organic growth, the collaborative and experimental nature of their practice, and their strong relationship with the London alternative scene. After 5 years of building this project, Lexi will also share about the shift that has been operating in their creative journey towards a more multidisciplinary work, experimenting with 3D printing and digital art. This podcast is a truthful conversation on the joys and hardships of this creative journey, celebrating the strength of the creative community and acknowledging the structural issues that are intertwined with the fashion industry.     Welcome to the first episode of 'Fake It Until You Make It, Dreams and Pitfalls of the Fashion Industry', a podcast aiming to take an honest look at the fashion designer career and discover how and what it means to make it in the fashion industry.  In this pilot episode, hosted by the journalist and fashion sociologist Zoé Heller, the creator of this podcast, Marie Schaller comes back on her personal experience within the fashion industry. Starting with her fashion education in Paris at the Institut Française de la Mode, to her upbringing as an alternative creative in London working as a freelance costume and fashion designer. This podcast is a truthful conversation on the joy and hardship of this creative journey, celebrating the strength of the creative community and acknowledging the issues around privilege and mental health that are intertwined with the fashion industry.
