    State of Roe: Maine

    State of Roe: Maine

Maine is not just the Pine Tree State but a safe one as well. Following the fall of Roe, Governor Janet Mills signed an executive order that safeguards health care providers, patients and abortion access across the state.
As of 1994, Maine law has protected access to abortion in general, with the only requirement that abortion-seekers under the age of majority have the consent of a parent or older family member. Uniquely, Maine requires insurance companies to cover abortion through telemedicine, allowing access to abortive pills if needed.

    State of Roe: New Hampshire

    State of Roe: New Hampshire

The latest entry in the State of Roe series focuses on New Hampshire, which we're happy to declare a safe state for abortion and reproductive rights. In 1997, then-Governor Jeanne Shaheen took the outdated "zombie laws" restricting reproductive rights off the books. There are four abortion providers in New Hampshire, which can be found on AbortionFinder.org. The Reproductive Freedom Fund of New Hampshire can provide you with funding if needed.
However do note that New Hampshire does have a parental notification law for abortion, meaning that a judge must determine if the underage abortion-seeker is "mature" enough to get an abortion. It is good to note, though, that there is a push for better access to contraceptives across the state.

    State of Roe: Vermont

    State of Roe: Vermont

Vermont as been a wonderful, safe state for reproductive health since the Roe v. Wade decision, and following the fall of Roe, Vermonters are working to enshrine the right to abortion in their state constitution.
This coming November election, the Right to Personal Reproductive Autonomy Amendment—also known as Proposal 5—will be going on the ballot. The proposal aims to amend constitution to ensure every Vermonter has the right to reproductive liberty. Vote YES to help Vermont become a "super state" for safe and legal abortion.

    State of Roe: Minnesota

    State of Roe: Minnesota

The North Star State has long been a safe state for abortion, and is a haven for those from surrounding states seeking a termination to their pregnancies. Ramsey County District Judge Thomas A. Gilligan, Jr. has struck down almost all of the restrictions placed on abortion that had been gradually building up due to the state legislature, making Minnesota even safer than it historically has been.

    State of Roe: New York

    State of Roe: New York

New York, the subject of today's State of Roe, has long been a safe harbor for those seeking access to safe and legal abortions, legalizing the right to choose even before Roe v. Wade. State governor Kathy Hochul has emphasized that abortion will remain safe and accessible in New York even after the fall of Roe, with the state updating and codifying its laws in 2019.
Medicaid covers abortion for New York residents and undocumented individuals, extending health care coverage for an individual up to a year after the termination of their pregnancy. The state also has non-extradition rules in place to ensure that abortion providers are not prosecuted for this key service.
If you live in New York, be sure to vote in 2024 in favor of a equality amendment to the constitution that includes the right to abortion.

    State of Roe: Montana

    State of Roe: Montana

While Montana was a pro-choice state for a long time, helped by liberal and progressive politicians, it has trended toward conservatism and anti-choice leanings in recent years. However, Chris considers the state safe for abortion for now, with the caveat that Governor Greg Gianforte and Attorney General Austin Knudsen have their own anti-choice agendas.
Geography can actually be a prohibitive factor in getting an abortion in Montana, given the size of the state, though advances in telemedicine make it easier these days to arrange appointments. Even if Republicans in the state were to try and pass anti-abortion legislation, there are many legal and political hoops they would need to jump through first. Montana judges are also elected, with two up for reelection this November.
