Do you ever have questions about the food you're eating, but don't know who to ask? Is this good for me? Were the animals treated humanely? Is eating this burger killing the planet? What product should I choose? It can be hard to make decisions, when there are so many options around you and marketing campaigns that spend billions to get you to buy their products. That's why we're here, to tell you the truth about agriculture, right from the horse's mouth-er farmer's mouth. Jenna Hardy and Joy Nystrom are two 20-something, millennial farmers who are going to ask all the questions you may have, and answer the questions that you never knew you had about agriculture so that you can make informed decisions, based on what you learn.     Vodka made from milk?

    Can vodka be made from milk? Yes. This week we dive into Dairy Distillery and find out how one engineer went from being a basement moonshiner to making vodka from milk. Vodkow is made from milk permeate- a waste product that comes from dairy products. Omid McDonald heard that this waste was being dumped and that farmers had to pay for it, so he thought- why don't we use that waste and make alcohol.     Do you ever wonder where your waste goes when you flush it down the toilet? Do you ever worry that farmers don't ACTUALLY care about the environment? Are you ever worried that farmers are destroying the land rather than helping it? In the poop cast, we talk all about- well poop. That is we discuss all the ways that farmers use waste to grow crops, but also how far they have come in short period of time, Joy sits down with Manure Expert- Dr. Katherine Knowlton of Virginia Tech and discusses just how research has helped farmers improve their practices and in turn, has helped improve the waterways. Dr. Knowlton has been researching the effects of animal agriculture on the environment for more than a decade and her research has helped to revolutionize how farmers feed their cows. Annabel and her husband are 5th generation farmers and we talk about everything from how beef cattle are cared for daily, how farmers protect their land, and what it means to eat locally and seasonally.     EP. 3 Debunking "factory farming" with 10,000 cows

    10,000 cows is A LOT of cows. How are those cows being cared for? How do we know that those cows are getting personal attention? There is no way that someone could take care of that many animals. In today's world that would probably be considered a "factory farm", but this week we debunk the myth of "factory farming" with Royal Dairy Owner, Austin Allred, who tells us all about the extremely personal care he gives to his 10,000 cows every single day. We also dive a little bit into the cool things that Royal Dairy is doing for the environment. Tune in to learn about how cows are cared for on a personal level and how farmers are taking care of the planet.     How do we know that farmers are treating their animals right? How do we ensure that the environment is being cared for? How do we know that farmers are putting out quality products that we can trust? Celebrating 10 years- The National Dairy FARM program helps to ensure that all dairy products that are available are of the highest possible quality, from the animal care, to taking care of the land, to how farmers treat their employees. This week we sit down with Emily Yeiser Stepp, the Senior Director of The National Dairy FARM Program, to discuss how farmers are actually regulated to ensure that animal care and protecting the environment on dairy farms are of the utmost importance. “We have a really exciting story to tell [as farmers] and now we have the data to prove that” “I think we all want to feel good about the products we are purchasing” “Since 1964 we’ve reduced carbon footprint by 63%, and in just the past ten years we have improved upon that number and have improved certain areas of environmental impact by 10 to 20%”....”That’s an exceptional story and that’s an excellent sustainability story for the industry” Recipe of the week: EGGNOG!!     1. Meet the Farm Splainers

    Welcome to Farmsplaining- the truth about agriculture. Meet your hosts, Jenna Hardy and Joy Nystrom, two Millennial dairy farmers trying to find answers to all the questions you may have, but don't know who to ask. Jenna is the Calf Manager of a 1500 cow dairy in Pennsylvania and Joy is the Farm Manager of a 550 cow dairy in Virginia. Both are graduates of Virginia Tech, where they studied dairy science. When they are not farming, they like to workout, drink wine or whiskey, decorate their homes, play with dogs- and do most of the normal things that 20-something females like to do. On this episode of Farmsplaining, learn who they are and why they want to tell the world the truth about agriculture.
