Fearless Talk 34: Unexpected Miracles with Hilda Bih Muluh

Fearless Talk 34: Unexpected Miracles with Hilda Bih Muluh

In this inspiring episode of the Resilience in the Pews series, we dive into the remarkable life of Hilda, whose story of faith and determination unfolds in unexpected ways. Our episode, titled "Unexpected Miracles," explores how Hilda, despite being physically limited to a tricycle and later a wheelchair, overcame immense challenges and societal stigmas from her upbringing in Cameroon to finding her true community and calling in journalism.
Hilda’s journey began with her family seeking help from a witch doctor, a common practice in her culture for those deemed "cursed" due to disabilities. She shares her terrifying experiences and how her budding faith in Jesus provided protection and strength during these dark times. The conversation also touches on the painful yet all-too-common experiences of misguided healing services within the Christian community, which tested her faith but never broke her spirit.
One of the most profound parts of Hilda's story is her battle with severe depression, which led her to the brink of suicide. She discusses this dark period with candor, offering hope and advice to others who may be facing similar struggles. The unexpected miracle here is her survival and continued faith in God’s plan for her life.
As Hilda navigated through college, she found her tribe—a community that showed her the true meaning of Jesus's love and support. She shares a poignant story about her advocacy for a new wheelchair, demonstrating her resilience and ability to effect change. Inspired by another person's story of overcoming physical limitations, Hilda realized her own potential to make a significant impact.
Now a successful journalist, Hilda uses her platform to share stories of faith, resilience, and the power of unexpected miracles. Join us as Hilda imparts her wisdom and insights, proving that miracles don’t always look like you'd expect, but they come just when you need them most. This episode is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the transformative power of faith.

Talk 30: Calling Out Truth with Julie Roys

Talk 30: Calling Out Truth with Julie Roys

Our guest today is a veteran investigator reporter and founder of The Roys Report.

Christy asked Julie these questions and more!
What are the three top common themes of bad behavior/unhealth that you see within the churches you are reporting on? I often see that the churches you are reporting on, decline to comment. Why do you think that is? How do you conduct an investigation fairly? Has your reporting ever been wrong? If so, what action steps did you take? How would you like to address your critics who think you are causing division by your reporting?Do you read the comments on your social pages and blogs? How do you protect your heart from all the mean things being said? Part of your mission is not only reporting the truth, but restoring the church. What is your vision for restoring the church? What are your goals for making that mission (restoring the church) happen in the short term and long term? Messages that Julie mentioned can be found on her YouTube Channel.

Talk 29: Leadership: Too Heavy to Carry with Lance Ford

Talk 29: Leadership: Too Heavy to Carry with Lance Ford

It’s an intriguing title, why would leadership be too heavy to carry?

In this episode Christy asks Lance
Explain the idea of the starfish and spider in terms of your chapters on leadership. Talk about how you went “from being the spider, to being the one caught in the spider web”? Why is the current way Churches are doing leadership too heavy to carry? What happened in the mid 1990’s in regards to the church growth movement that changed the landscape of local churches? “The Church is a business and has to run like a business.” I have heard that as well from people I respect greatly. Why is that a problem and what mind shifts do we need to take that is a healthier approach to church and collecting money?  You have a powerful quote in The Starfish and the Spirit that says; “When the church is dysfunctional, it is the most appalling of all the institutions.” Explain.  Doesn’t someone have to be in charge? Help us understand the main characteristics/duties of a light-load leader? Get Lance's new book: Atlas Factor: Shifting Leadership Onto the Shoulders of Jesus

Resilience in the Pews- a BIG YES

It’s sad to think about the amount of pain caused by the church in our modern world. Realizing and digging into the cause of the hurt, whether it be emotional or sexual abuse, the silencing of HALF of God’s image via flawed human theology, intellectual dishonesty and lack of willingness to seek answers or at least see different perspectives as deserving of attention, or unwillingness to work on social intelligence- this is how we begin the process of healing. Name it. Thank you for having these tough conversations! They help make the next conversations more informed. I believe that God is doing a great redemptive work in the Church during our times, and podcasts like this series are confirmation that we get to see what He is doing if we only have the eyes to see and the ears to hear.

The short “Fearless Tips” episodes are my favorite!

Christy comes alongside and provides a safe, faith-based holding space for so many people who struggle with anxiety. Her attentiveness and energy give her listeners that dose of encouragement. Christy’s warmth and wisdom say - I see you and I’ve been there. This podcast is a wonderful pairing with Christy’s new book called Nervous Breakthrough: Finding Freedom from Fear and Anxiety in a World That Feeds It.
