Day 5 The 168 Hour Audit

If you have ever thought, “I just want to hear God,” but you also feel like He is far away, this short Friday devotion is for you. We sit with Jeremiah 29:11-13 and James 4:8 and name a frustration many Christians carry: the ache of distance from God. Then we slow down long enough to notice the part we often skip, that closeness is tied to pursuit, and God’s promise to be found is connected to seeking Him with our whole heart.  We use a simple relationship picture to make it real. If you are the only one calling, texting, and showing up, the relationship thins out over time. Spiritual intimacy works the same way. God is not lost, and “finding Jesus” is not about hunting for a hidden Savior. The issue is usually attention. We fill our week with everything else, then wonder why our connection feels shallow. That is where the 168-hour audit comes in. When you look honestly at how many hours go to TV, phone time, hobbies, and weekend planning, you can finally see why one hour on Sunday does not translate into deep daily closeness.  We end with a practical challenge you can actually do today: change the input to change the output. Turn off the noise, put down the phone, read the Bible, pray, and sit quietly long enough to listen. Give Jesus 30 focused minutes and test the promise of James 4:8, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” If this helps you, subscribe, share it with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review so more people can find Field Notes.

Day 4 Trading Gold For God

Moses is on the mountain talking with the Creator of the universe, and his request is as bold as it is human: “Please show me your glory.” That single line from Exodus 33 captures what so many of us carry beneath the surface. We want to know God is real. We want to feel his presence. We want confidence that he’s with us when life gets confusing, painful, or slow. Then we turn one page back to Exodus 32 and see the other side of the same moment. While Moses waits and prays, the Israelites grow restless and ask Aaron to make them a god they can see, touch, and control. They hand over their gold and end up worshiping a calf. We talk about why this is the root of idolatry, why our hearts keep drifting toward immediate gratification, and why John Calvin’s phrase “the heart is an idol factory” still explains so much of modern spiritual life. We also get uncomfortably practical. Your idol probably isn’t a golden statue in the yard, but it might be your career, your bank account, your hobby, your boat, your family, or even ministry. When good things become ultimate things, they start carrying our comfort, security, and identity. We close with a simple “idol inventory” you can do today, plus a clear next step: repent and intentionally redirect your worship to God so you can actually seek him with an undivided heart. If you found this helpful, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review. What’s one thing you’re most tempted to run to when life gets hard?

    Day 3 The War Within

You know the feeling: you mean well, you want to do what’s right, and then you catch yourself doing the very thing you said you wouldn’t do again. That inner tug-of-war can make “Blessed are the pure in heart” sound less like a promise and more like a verdict, and if you’re honest, your first thought might be, “I’m out.”  We sit in Romans 7:15–19 where Paul names the struggle with shocking clarity, then we hold it right next to Romans 8:1, the line that changes everything: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” We talk about why recognizing your own weakness is not the end of the story, and how even Paul’s life proves that spiritual maturity doesn’t mean you never wrestle it means you learn where to take the wrestle.  We also explore why God may allow ongoing weakness to do something vital in us: keep us dependent, keep us humble, and keep our confidence anchored in grace rather than willpower. If you’re stuck in a cycle of shame, this is a reminder that your identity is not your worst moment, and your growth doesn’t come from fixing yourself first. Bring the habit, the attitude, or the thought pattern into the light, admit your need, and lean into the grace that is sufficient.  If this helped you, subscribe, share it with a friend who feels disqualified, and leave a review so more people can find real hope. What part of the war within do you most want freedom in right now?

The Buffet Life Leaves You Hungry Again

The thing that makes modern life so tiring isn’t always the pain, it’s the repetition. We keep going back to the same sources for relief, motivation, and comfort, and somehow we end up thirsty again. That’s why Jesus’ words in John 4 hit so hard: anyone who drinks from ordinary water will thirst again, but the water He gives becomes a spring welling up to eternal life. We unpack what that means for real life, not just church language.  We start with a simple picture: the buffet. You can fill your plate over and over, leave stuffed, and still wake up asking, “What’s next?” That’s the pattern of earthly wells, even when the “well” is something good. We talk about fleeting moments, why we try to repeat them, and the uncomfortable truth that even answered prayers can later become new prayer requests when we ask created things to be our source.  Then we pivot to a better image: a natural spring that pushes water upward from deep underground, steady and strong. That’s a window into the Holy Spirit’s work in a believer and a warning about the danger of becoming familiar with Jesus. We close with a clear challenge: carve out 20 uninterrupted minutes a day with Jesus (Bible, prayer, trusted teaching) and track what shifts in your stress, patience, and mindset over the next week. Subscribe, share this with a friend who feels worn out, and leave a review with what you’re choosing for your 20 minutes.

    Spiritual Fast Food

You can spend hours planning a diet, a trip, or the perfect weekend, but then try to grow with Jesus on whatever time is left. That gap is the heart of today’s Field Notes devotion, where we take an honest look at “spiritual fast food” and why it leaves us undernourished no matter how much content we consume.  We read Deuteronomy 6:6–7 and talk about the Shema, the daily prayer that frames God’s Word as something meant to shape normal life: sitting at home, walking along the way, waking up, and lying down. That steady, integrated discipleship clashes with the modern habit of treating faith as a Sunday-only hour plus the occasional rushed prayer when life goes sideways. If we want a relationship with Jesus that truly transforms us, we cannot reduce theology to algorithm-driven clips or let sermons and podcasts fade into background noise.  We also get practical. We challenge you to audit your media and entertainment and make a simple swap: take one hour you’d normally give to passive scrolling, Netflix, or gaming, and invest it in active spiritual growth. Read an entire epistle like James, Ephesians, or Philippians in one sitting, listen to a full expository sermon, or work through a theologically rich chapter with focus. If you’ve got time to plan the details of what you love, you’ve got time to sit down for a real meal with Jesus.  Subscribe for more daily devotionals, share this with a friend who feels spiritually distracted, and leave a review so more people can find Field Notes. What’s your one-hour swap going to be this week?
