Dreams, Battles & Who Really F*cks With You

What happens when you get old enough to realize that far fewer people truly support you than you once thought? In this episode of the Fifty Sixin Podcast, Tyler and BJ get more personal than usual, taking an honest look at friendship, struggle, success, self-doubt, dreams, loyalty, and the people who have helped shape the men they are today. The conversation begins with a deceptively simple question: Are we actually getting better at life—or have we just gotten better at dealing with the b******t? After decades of mistakes, setbacks, careers, relationships, parenting, and hard-earned experience, the guys reflect on how struggle builds confidence and perspective—and whether removing those struggles would have ultimately changed who they became. They also talk about raising the next generation differently: allowing your kids to struggle enough to grow while still providing the guidance and reassurance you may not have had yourself. From there, Tyler and BJ turn the conversation toward each other and ask: What's one lesson you've learned from me? That leads to an unusually open conversation between two longtime friends about patience, consistency, hard work, fatherhood, friendship, showing up for people, and having the confidence to follow your own plan even when everyone around you thinks you should be doing something else. One lesson rises above the rest: Go be happy. Not for revenge. Not to prove somebody wrong. Build a life you're actually happy living. The guys also get honest about their own constant internal battles. BJ talks about his tendency toward pettiness and learning when to let things go, while Tyler opens up about walking into rooms where everything is going right but still hearing that internal voice telling him he doesn't belong there. Then things get even more personal. What are three feelings that are almost impossible to describe? The birth of a child. Falling in love. Grief. The rush of hitting the game-winning shot. Shame. Heartbreak. Those moments in life that are so powerful that words never seem capable of explaining them. And what about the dreams you've never really admitted out loud? BJ reveals his dream of becoming an R&B singer—and maybe a superhero—while Tyler admits something even BJ didn't expect he's always wished he could really dance. But one of the biggest conversations of the episode centers on who really f*cks with you. As you get older, you begin noticing the difference between people who know you and people who genuinely support you. Who celebrates your wins? Who calls when they don't need something? Who defends your name when you're not in the room? Who tells you when you're wrong? Who shows up when life goes bad—not just when everything is good? And who supports what you're trying to build simply because they support you? Maybe adulthood isn't about collecting more friends. Maybe it's about finally figuring out who your friends actually are. The episode also challenges the idea that our careers should define us. BJ explains why he tells the people he supervises not to make the job their entire identity: careers can change or disappear, but the person you are outside of the job has to remain. Finally, Tyler and BJ look back at the mentors, coaches, friends, colleagues, and other people who influenced their lives—and why the people willing to give honest advice, defend your name, answer the phone, support the crazy idea, or simply ask “What can I do to help?” can change the trajectory of your life. This is Fifty Sixin at its most honest: two friends talking about the things men don't always say to each other—mixed with plenty of jokes, questionable confessions, pettiness, and the kind of conversations that happen when you've known someone long enough to call them on their b******t. Spend the Money, Take the Trip | Family, Memories & Getting Older

What are we actually saving for—and at what point does delayed gratification become delayed living? In this episode of the Fifty Sixin Podcast, Tyler returns from a trip to Tokyo and Okinawa, Japan, where he traveled with his daughter to visit his son. What begins as a recap of an unforgettable family trip quickly turns into a much bigger conversation about time, money, family, aging, travel, and what really matters as we get older. Tyler shares his first experience seeing Japan as a tourist rather than traveling there for work—from the professionalism, courtesy, cleanliness, food, and incredibly efficient public transportation to experiencing a typhoon in Okinawa and the brutal reality of international air travel. But the most meaningful part of the trip wasn't Japan itself. It was experiencing it with his children. After not seeing his son for more than a year, the trip becomes a reminder that our kids eventually grow up, build lives of their own, and may not always be available for the experiences we keep telling ourselves we'll have "someday." That leads to one of the episode's biggest questions: At what point does preparing for tomorrow prevent us from enjoying today? Tyler and BJ discuss the traditional formula we're taught—work hard, save, invest, sacrifice, and eventually enjoy the rewards—and challenge themselves to figure out where responsible planning ends and postponing life begins. Because you can always make more money. You can't always recreate an opportunity. And sometimes the return on an investment isn't financial—it's the memory of being somewhere incredible with the people who matter most. The guys also debate male group travel versus female group travel and why women may have figured out something men haven't: pooling resources, sharing rooms, planning together, and taking more trips while the guys insist on their own rooms and a planning process that basically consists of: "Vegas?" "When?" "I'm in." As always, the conversation moves between humor and something much deeper: getting older, watching your children become adults, learning to respect that everyone's struggles are relative to their own experiences, and realizing that the things we postpone today may not still be available tomorrow. It's an episode about travel—but really, it's about time. How much do we have? What are we doing with it? And are we spending our lives preparing to live...or actually living? Benefits, Bad Decisions & Baby Dragons

If you had a time machine... where would you go? Would you witness history, revisit your younger self, or jump into the future to see how your story ends? In this episode of the Fifty Sixin Podcast, the conversation starts with a lighthearted discussion about haircuts, first impressions, and how something as simple as changing your appearance can completely change the way people perceive you. From there, the hosts dive into a wide-ranging conversation about one of the biggest challenges facing law enforcement today—recruiting the next generation of officers. Drawing on decades of combined experience in local, state, and federal law enforcement, they discuss what agencies should actually be looking for when hiring new officers. Is physical fitness still important? Can emotional intelligence be taught? Should standards ever be lowered to fill vacancies? And what separates someone who simply wants a badge from someone who truly wants to serve their community? The conversation then shifts to something every young professional should understand but rarely does: benefits matter. From pensions and healthcare to retirement planning and military service, the hosts share lessons they wish someone had taught them in their twenties. They explain why salary alone doesn't tell the whole story and how making the right career decision early can dramatically change your financial future decades later. Whether you're considering law enforcement, military service, or another profession entirely, this discussion offers practical advice that applies far beyond policing. Later in the episode, the hosts tackle one of life's ultimate hypothetical questions: What would you do if you had a time machine? Would you witness the construction of the pyramids? Visit ancient civilizations? Talk to your younger self and change a life-defining decision? Or simply observe history without altering it? It's an entertaining conversation that quickly becomes surprisingly personal as both hosts reflect on regrets, opportunities, and the wisdom that only comes with experience. As always, the discussion blends humor, storytelling, leadership lessons, and honest conversations about life, purpose, and legacy before wrapping up with one of the internet's most ridiculous debates: Is a T-Rex basically a dragon? You'll have to decide for yourself. Whether you're a first responder, veteran, parent, leader, or simply someone trying to build a better future, this episode is packed with laughs, practical wisdom, and the kind of conversations that only happen between lifelong friends. Life Lessons After 40 | Relationships, Respect & What Really Matters

What do healthy relationships actually require? Is hearing someone say, "I'm proud of you," more meaningful than we realize? And what are the few things in life that are truly worth spending your hard-earned money on? In this episode of the Fifty Sixin Podcast, the hosts catch up after a busy few weeks, sharing stories ranging from painful dental emergencies and major family milestones to professional updates and the realities of working in high-stress careers. The conversation quickly evolves into a thoughtful discussion about modern relationships, mutual respect, expectations between men and women, and how those expectations change as we get older. What responsibilities should partners have toward one another? What does respect actually look like in a healthy relationship? And why do so many conversations about dating seem to miss the bigger picture? The hosts also reflect on why hearing "I'm proud of you" can have such a lasting impact, especially for men who often hear criticism more than encouragement. It's an honest conversation about friendship, mentorship, and taking time to recognize the people who have helped shape our lives. From there, they debate the top three things that are always worth spending money on—health, experiences, quality tools, education, and investing in yourself instead of chasing appearances. The episode also offers a candid look behind the scenes of law enforcement, discussing decision-making, leadership, mentorship, and why experience often teaches lessons that no policy manual ever could. Through personal stories from their careers, the hosts explain why perspective, patience, and understanding the bigger picture matter just as much as enforcing the law. As always, the conversation is equal parts serious, humorous, and completely unscripted, touching on everything from travel and life priorities to growing older, learning from mentors, and appreciating how far you've come. Whether you're navigating relationships, building your career, raising a family, or simply trying to become a better version of yourself, this episode is filled with the kind of conversations that happen between lifelong friends—honest, thoughtful, and occasionally hilarious. When Does It Click? Fitness, Films, Tech and Surviving Modern Life

In this episode of the Fifty Sixin Podcast, the hosts reunite after a short break and do what they do best—turn everyday life into meaningful conversation. The episode kicks off with stories about life's latest curveballs, from plumbing disasters and emergency dental work to getting older, returning to running, chasing fitness goals, and the reality that recovery isn't quite what it used to be. Along the way, they discuss discipline, longevity, bodybuilding, and why consistency often matters more than talent. From there, the conversation shifts into a bigger question: When does it finally "click?" Whether it's a career, parenting, relationships, sports, or simply growing into adulthood, the hosts explore what creates confidence and competence. Is it experience? Failure? Time? Or is life simply a constant process of figuring things out? They also take a nostalgic look back at the disappearing world of mid-budget movies, wondering why Hollywood seems to have abandoned the films that once became cult classics. From Super Troopers and Major Payne to forgotten favorites and blockbuster fatigue, it's a conversation every movie fan can appreciate. The discussion then turns toward technology and asks an increasingly important question: Is technology making our lives better—or quietly making us more dependent? From growing up before smartphones and GPS to today's AI tools, social media, shrinking attention spans, and digital convenience, they debate where technology has improved our lives and where it may actually be holding us back. Finally, the conversation takes an unexpected turn into preparedness and self-reliance. What everyday items could you actually live without? What would you keep if society suddenly collapsed? The hosts discuss practical survival, forgotten skills, the importance of knowing how things work, and why modern conveniences may have made us less resilient than previous generations. As always, the conversation is honest, humorous, and filled with the kind of sidebars that happen when lifelong friends sit down without a script. If you've ever wondered when confidence finally arrives, missed the movies of the '90s and early 2000s, questioned our dependence on technology, or thought about how prepared you'd really be without it, this episode is for you.
