The Stuff About Parenting Nobody Says Out Loud

Episode 11: The Stuff About Parenting Nobody Says Out Loud We all love our kids AND can we admit that we don’t love every single part of parenting? In this episode of Finding Myself While Raising Them, I’m saying some of the things parents think all the time but don’t always feel comfortable admitting. Like sometimes I don’t want to play. Sometimes bedtime really is my favorite part of the day. Sometimes I miss the freedom of my old life. And yes… sometimes other people’s kids annoy me. There I said it! We’re talking about the funny, frustrating, lonely, complicated, and incredibly normal parts of parenting that don’t always make it onto social media. In this episode: Why being a good parent doesn’t mean constantly entertaining your kids Why it’s completely possible to love your kids AND count down to bedtime Missing parts of your old life without wanting that life back Feeling lonely even when you have a village Why having kids doesn’t automatically make you love all kids The parenting choices we swore we’d never make… until we actually had children How parenting has humbled me Losing pieces of your identity and figuring out who you are now Why complaining about parenting doesn’t make you any less grateful for it Parenting can be beautiful and exhausting. Fulfilling and monotonous. Hilarious and completely overwhelming. Two things can be true at the same time. You can need a break from your kids and miss them when they’re gone. You can miss who you used to be and love who you’re becoming. You can admit that parenting is really freaking hard and still choose this life over and over again. 🎙️ Now I want to hear from you: What’s something about parenting YOU think but rarely say out loud? Send it my way because I have a feeling we’re going to need a Part Two. Finding Myself While Raising Them Hosted by Dr. Michelle Lowry

    Listener Questions Answered

You asked, I answered! For Episode 10, we’re doing something a little different! I’m answering the questions you’ve been sending in and giving you a little more insight into the woman behind the podcast. From maternal mental health research and life in Australia to motherhood, career dreams, and what it’s really like juggling four kids and a COO role… this episode is a little bit of everything. In this episode, I’m answering: 1. “Tell us more about the maternal mental health research you do!” I share more about my work in maternal mental health research, why this area became so important to me, and what I hope we can do better when it comes to supporting mothers and families. 2. “What’s Australia like — and will you guys ever go back?” Australia holds such a big chapter of our family story. I’m talking about what life was really like living across the world, what I loved, what I struggled with, and whether Australia might ever be home again. 3. “If you could do something else as a career, what would it be?” Because apparently one career isn’t enough! I’m sharing the career paths I’ve dreamed about, the things I’d love to explore, and what I might be doing if I weren’t already wearing approximately 47 different hats. 4. “What is it like having four kids?” The honest answer? Beautiful, chaotic, exhausting, hilarious… and definitely not what I imagined. I’m sharing what life looks like as a mom of four and how motherhood has changed me along the way. 5. “Tell us more about your COO role!” I’m pulling back the curtain on what it’s like working as a COO, what my day-to-day actually looks like, and how I balance leadership, business, motherhood, and everything in between. This episode is really a chance for you to get to know me beyond the title of “mom,” “researcher,” “podcaster,” or “COO.” Because underneath all of those roles, I’m still just trying to figure out who I am while raising the people I love most. Thanks for sending in your questions! Please keep them coming! The Mental Load

Finding myself while raising them. Parenting comes with a lot of love, joy, and unforgettable moments but it also comes with a weight that many parents carry silently: the mental load. In this episode, we’re talking about the invisible work behind parenting-the constant remembering, planning, anticipating, and managing that often happens behind the scenes. I share my own experience navigating motherhood, career, pregnancy, and the never-ending list of things that live in my brain at all times. We’ll talk about why so many parents feel exhausted even when they’re “doing everything right,” why the mental load can impact our relationships and mental health, and how we can begin to release the pressure to carry it all perfectly. Because the truth is: parenting was never meant to be done while losing ourselves. In this episode, we talk about: What the mental load actually is (and why it’s more than just being busy) The invisible responsibilities parents carry every day Why feeling overwhelmed doesn’t mean you’re failing How the mental load impacts our patience, relationships, and sense of self The difference between someone “helping” and someone sharing ownership Small ways we can create more balance and give ourselves more grace A reminder for today: You are not behind. You are not failing. You are carrying a lot. And while we’re raising our children, we’re still becoming ourselves. If this episode resonated with you, share it with another parent who needs the reminder that they are not alone.

    The Rebrand

This episode is one of the most personal I’ve ever recorded. If you’ve been part of this community since the Speech4Parents days, thank you. That platform allowed me to educate parents, connect with families, and share my passion for helping children communicate. I’ll always be incredibly grateful for where it all began. But over the last few years, my life has changed in ways I never could have imagined. I’ve become a mother to a growing family, taken on leadership roles, navigated the demands of career and home, experienced seasons of burnout, joy, overwhelm, and growth and through it all, I’ve realized that the conversations I feel most called to have are about something much bigger than speech and language development. This rebrand isn’t about leaving something behind. It’s about stepping fully into who I am today. In this episode, I share why I made the decision to evolve the podcast, what this next chapter means, and what you can expect moving forward. In this episode, we discuss: Why I decided it was time to rebrand. How motherhood has changed both my personal life and professional perspective. Letting go of the pressure to stay the same simply because it’s familiar. What you can expect from future episodes. This podcast is becoming a space for honest conversations about motherhood, mental health, identity, resilience, and finding more joy in the everyday moments of life. Whether you’re a parent, a professional, or simply someone navigating life’s many seasons, I hope these conversations remind you that you’re not alone. Thank you for growing alongside me. I’m so excited for what’s ahead. If this episode resonates with you, I’d love for you to subscribe, leave a review, and share it with someone who might need to hear this message today.

    Traveling with Kids

What is it really like to travel with three young kids… while pregnant? In this episode of Speech4Parents, Michelle shares the honest story behind her family’s recent trip to Peru — from why they chose to go, to navigating travel during the first trimester, to what it actually looks like traveling with kids. This isn’t a highlight reel. It’s the real experience — the chaos, the challenges, and the meaningful moments in between. Michelle also shares practical tips for traveling with kids and how these experiences can support development in ways you might not expect. If you’ve ever wondered whether traveling with kids is “worth it”… this episode is for you. What We Talk About Why we decided to take this trip to Peru Traveling during the first trimester (and what that really felt like) The hardest parts of traveling while pregnant What it’s actually like traveling with three kids Airport logistics, plane rides, and real-life moments Managing expectations vs. reality Practical tips for traveling with kids How travel supports speech, language, and social development Key Takeaways There is rarely a “perfect” time to travel with kids Traveling with kids isn’t relaxing — it’s parenting in a new environment Lowering expectations can make the experience more enjoyable Kids don’t need perfect trips — they need shared experiences Travel naturally supports communication, flexibility, and problem-solving skills A Note for Parents If you’ve been putting off traveling because it feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. It is more work. But it can also be incredibly meaningful. The goal doesn’t have to be perfection — it can simply be creating memories together, even in the messy moments. Baby Number 4!!!!

We’re expecting baby number four. And in this episode, Michelle is sharing what that actually feels like beyond the highlight reel. Because the truth is, pregnancy (especially when you already have kids) comes with a mix of emotions. Excitement. Gratitude. Overwhelm. Uncertainty. Joy… and a lot of questions. In this honest and personal episode, Michelle opens up about her initial reaction, what it’s like being pregnant while raising three kids, and the thoughts that come up when your family is growing again. If you’ve ever experienced mixed emotions during pregnancy or while expanding your family, this conversation will remind you that you’re not alone. What We Talk About Finding out we’re expecting baby number four The mix of emotions that come with pregnancy Why excitement isn’t always the only feeling Being pregnant while already raising multiple kids The mental load of parenting during pregnancy Thoughts and worries about adding another child How each child has changed the way I parent Letting go of perfection and control Key Takeaways It’s normal to feel more than just excitement during pregnancy Multiple emotions can exist at the same time and that doesn’t take away from gratitude Parenting while pregnant brings a different kind of challenge Every new child stretches you, but also grows you You don’t have to have it all figured out to move forward A Note for Parents If you’re in a season of change, whether you’re expecting, considering growing your family, or adjusting to a new dynamic, it’s okay to feel unsure. It’s okay to be in the middle. You don’t need to have a perfect reaction. You just need space to process it honestly. Overthinking

“Am I overthinking this… or should I actually be concerned?” If you’ve ever found yourself questioning your child’s development, comparing milestones, or going down a late-night Google spiral — this episode is for you. In this solo episode of Speech4Parents, Michelle talks about the very real anxiety many parents feel when it comes to milestones, speech, behavior, and development. She breaks down the difference between being aware vs. overthinking, shares personal experiences as both a parent and speech-language pathologist, and offers a more grounded way to approach your child’s growth. This episode will help you step out of constant comparison and into a place of clarity, confidence, and trust. What We Talk About Why so many parents feel like they’re constantly evaluating their child The impact of milestone charts and social media on parent anxiety The difference between healthy awareness and overthinking How comparison shows up (even when we try to avoid it) A personal perspective on worrying about your own child When to trust your gut and seek support A more balanced way to look at child development Key Takeaways Noticing your child’s development is not the problem — constant anxiety is Development is not a perfect timeline; children grow in different areas at different times Comparison is common, but it’s not always helpful Trusting your instincts and asking questions is a form of advocacy, not overreacting Your child is more than a checklist of milestones A Note for Parents Caring deeply about your child’s development doesn’t mean you’re overthinking — it means you’re paying attention. But your child also deserves a parent who can step back, be present, and enjoy who they are right now… not just focus on what comes next.
