    Take a Bite Out of Pride

    For our annual Pride-month episode, we are looking at two films that combine classic horror tropes along with LGBTQ+ themes. We start off with "Bit" from 2019, a vampire movie with a trans lead and a troupe of feminist vampires waging a war against the douchey men of Los Angeles. It's a fun film with a strong political component that serves as a strong underpinning of the rest of the action. We follow that with the EXCELLENT zombie-comedy "Queens of the Dead" from 2025. It's directed by Tina Romero, daughter of George Romero who basically created the modern zombie film. This is a truly outstanding bit of work. Very funny, with great performances from an incredible cast, it focuses on a wild night in New York when the dead are suddenly roaming the streets. This movie gets everything right and left us all eagerly anticipating Tina Romero's next film!     Episode 250 - Chucking Hazard

    After a career filled with punching and kicking, Chuck Norris finally was taken down. We celebrate his career, while still remembering that he was not a perfect person, and that his politics were regretably FAR removed from our own. Still though, he brought us a lot of entertainment over the years, and at least one of the movies we chose for the podcast reminded us of just how entertaining he COULD be in the hands of the right director. We start off with the disappointing "Firewalker" from 1986. In an attempt to cash in on the success of movies like "Romancing the Stone" they team Chuck up with the legendary Louis Gossett Jr. and Melody Anderson. Despite his long career of true masterpieces, director J. Lee Thompson was probably NOT the right choice for this one. There were highlights but the movie relied on humor that largely fell flat and a budget that was insufficient to sell the idea of globetrotting adventurers. Our second movie REALLY blew us away, 1991's "The Hitman" directed by his brother Aaron Norris. This is a rough mob story with a standout performance by Michael Parks as the villain. By turns violent and then funny, with moments of humanity included for good measure, this is a real winner!     Episode 249 - Sweet Money

    Episode 249 is here with two very different versions of what it looks like to get entangled in the prison system. We start with 1979's "Penitentiary" from filmmaker Jamaa Fanaka. Starring Leon Isaac Kennedy as "Too Sweet", who gets sent to prison on a bogus charge and gets involved in the prison's boxing program. In most ways, it's a comedy and has some great moments throughout. We follow that with 2017's "Shot Caller" from director Ric Roman Waugh and starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who gains the nickname "Money" once he lands in prison. After accidentally killing his friend in a drunk-driving incident, "Money" goes to prison and is recruited by the leader of one of the many gangs.     Episode 248 - Sweet T

    Episode 248 is our annual, Black History Month show. We look at a couple of VERY different, but equally badass lead actors who are fed up with the man and push back...hard! We start off with the legendary "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" from 1971. The brainchild of multi-hyphenate Melvin Van Peebles, it follows the eponymous character around as he settles some hash, and avoids arrest, with help from the community. It's brave, shocking, psychadelic stuff. It does have some questionable material in spots, but you can't deny the artistic impact of the message. We follow that with 1972's "Trouble Man", starring the incredible Robert Hooks as "Mister T", who is settling scores in the neighborhood and runs afoul of a wealthy criminal overlord. It drips with coolness and is really well made and we can not recommend it highly enough.
