Steve Day – Golden Trout Wilderness Pack Trains

Steve Day – Golden Trout Wilderness Pack Trains

    Episode Summary

I met Steve Day of Golden Trout Pack Trains at the Pleasanton, CA Fly Fishing Show. He said he led pack train trips into the Golden Trout Wilderness, in the Sequoia National Forest in California.  I did a double take and said, “excuse me, come again…”. He explained how he packs clients in by horse with a pack of mules and sets up basecamp along the Kern River, 20 miles into the backcountry. How his clients dry fly fish for big rainbows in clear water up and down the river, right from basecamp. How it’s just a short horseback ride up the mountain to the mecca and the original strain of the Golden Trout in Volcano Creek and Golden Trout Creek.  I could hardly stand it, couldn’t believe what I was hearing and proceed to make plans.

The trip did not disappoint. The horses and the pack train trip in was an amazing experience. The luxury camping right on the Kern River was a complete bonus as my mind was so fixed on the Golden Trout that I didn’t have expectations for this part of the trip but wow, it was amazing. Clearly heading up to Volcano Creek and Golden Trout Creek and seeing and yes, finally catching my first Golden was a magical moment and highlight not only of this trip but my fly fishing experiences.

On this podcast we hear from the wrangler angler himself, Steve Day and a couple of his amazing horse packers and trip leaders, Savanna Summers & Mari Stusser.

Thanks to Douglas Outdoors for sponsoring this episode and our entire trip across country. The Douglas Upstream 6-piece, 3 weight was a joy to cast and a blast to fish. It’s the perfect rod for backcountry fishing and it’s now my go-to light action rod.

Pat Dorsey is considered by many as one of the leading knowledge sources in fly fishing today. As a professional guide, author, and speaker he travels around the country and beyond fishing and teaching the sport he loves. As a partner and guide at the Blue Quill Angler he bases out of Evergreen, CO.

Bob Shannon & Parker Wright – The Fly Rod Shop – Stowe, VT

Bob Shannon & Parker Wright – The Fly Rod Shop – Stowe, VT

    Episode Summary

On this edition of the Fly-Fishing Journeys Podcast, we have a fun and lively conversation with Bob Shannon and Parker Wright of The Fly Rod Shop in Stowe, VT.  We dial in on both the DIY and guided fishing opportunities in the beautiful landscapes of Northern Vermont.

They share how what would typically be a winter, ski destination has become a year-round destination with tons of outdoor activities available. Coincidentally, I went to college in the area and taught skiing at Stowe and Smugglers Notch, so the conversation brought back lots of nostalgic memories.

We had a spirited chat about the trout creel limits and to be clear, as of Jan 1 of this year, Vermont Fish and Wildlife has reduced the trout creel limits to 8 in rivers and streams and 6 in lakes and ponds. At the recording of this conversation, it was at 12. I want to commend Bob for the time he served on the VF&W board in both his balanced approach and his advocacy for lowering the total creel limits. I am just glad that Vermont finally decided to lower that number. A strong case could be made for further protections for the Brook Trout as a wild, native fish over the Rainbows and Browns that are both non-native and stocked.

Great topics with excellent production

All of the podcasts were extremely well produced. I really enjoyed the different topics from podcast to podcast. It’s great that you take the podcast on the road with you so we get a different view point and topic of discussion from fly fisherman from around the world! Struggle with sound/production

The aim of this podcast is to record live at shows and events. While I’m sure Rob has great equipment, just by the nature of this type of production, there’s a large amount of background noise, echo, etc that makes it less than enjoyable to the listener. While I’ve come to listen to specific interviewees that were of interest, I’ve unsubbed from being a regular listener because I find the cacophonous sound too irritating.

Informative

I have listened to all of Robs podcasts. The are very informative and get me excited about new destinations. As a fly Tyer I also have enjoyed and learned from the The interviews with Bob Popovics and the other tyers. Good stuff Rob keep them coming.
