    2026.44 Why Students Don’t Follow Instructions (And It’s Not What You Think)

    Teachers everywhere know the moment: you’ve given the instructions, you’ve explained the task, and yet… half the class is wandering, chatting, guessing, or doing something wildly creative that has nothing to do with the lesson. It’s easy to label this as a behaviour issue. Students can’t follow what they can’t see. Cognitive Load Theory tells us that students can only hold a few pieces of information in working memory at once. When instructions are too long, too fast, too verbal, or too vague, students simply can’t process them. When the path isn’t clear, students create their own adventure.
