    Local Selection 307: mkbest

For the 307th edition of the series, mkbest delivers a deep and lush selection of rolling house, carefully shaped into a slow-burning, immersive journey. Belfast’s mkbest is an artist deeply embedded in the city’s club culture, an instinctive student of deeper, more refined strains of house music. Her sound is rooted in a stripped-back, patient aesthetic that prioritises atmosphere, progression, and emotional connection on the dancefloor above all else. Drawing influence from artists such as Malin Genie and Etzu Mahkayah, alongside foundational figures like Eddie Richards and Kerri Chandler, her selections bridge contemporary underground sensibilities with the classic lineage of house music. She moves fluidly between these worlds, navigating them with a subtle, deliberate touch. This mix feels like a complete expression of her approach. Sound, pacing, and intent aligned. Each track is chosen with a clear rationale, reflecting a selector’s mindset that resists excess or distraction. Gradually, she turns the dial, moving through hazy, chord-led atmospheres and ambient-leaning textures into more functional, Chicago-adjacent rhythms. There’s nothing overly attention-seeking here; instead, it’s cool, calm, and assured, much like the DJ at the controls. It sits in that sweet spot between the after-hours and the early morning, where the dancefloor breathes. mkbest

    Local Selection 306: Stephen Keddy

This week’s entry to the Local Selection is a long-overdue mix from Stephen Keddy, a staunch supporter of Irish electronic music. Keddy has consistently championed Irish producers, often putting together mixes made entirely of Irish material, and this set is another strong example of that commitment. A veteran of the Irish club scene, Keddy began DJing in the late 1990s, holding residencies at venues such as the legendary Funnel Club and what is now Centrepoint. Alongside his club work, he has also contributed to short film soundtracks, blending experimental electronic textures with more dancefloor-focused production. In the mid-2000s, he hosted Squiggles MindFunk Inc from Michigan, focusing on early dubstep and forward-thinking bass music. After a period away from music, he returned during lockdown with live streams and the weekly K0rOna Sessions on Wicked 107.2, showcasing new dancefloor releases with a strong emphasis on Irish artists. He now runs the bi-monthly Squiggles MindFunk Experiments, continuing his commitment to Irish electronic music while spanning IDM, UKG, breakbeat, techno, electro, acid, house, drum & bass, and industrial, often weaving in his own recently produced material. Keddy remains a dedicated advocate for Irish music, and his Bandcamp profile, familiar to many producers across the country, reflects his reputation for early and consistent support. This mix, made entirely of local artists, feels like one of the most long-overdue showcases from any Irish DJ. Here, Keddy weaves together a fluid but unpredictable blend of genres, soundscapes, tempos, moods, and textures, creating an all-out celebration of Irish electronic music. Moving effortlessly from house to breaks, techno to psytrance and beyond, it’s a combination that arguably shouldn’t work on paper, but in practice, it absolutely does. It’s a bold, boundaryless selection that highlights both the depth and diversity of the Irish scene, and Keddy’s ear for stitching it all into a coherent journey. Hats off to an unsung hero. 3. Local Selection 304: Jenn Hession

    Local Selection 304: Jenn Hession

This week’s Local Selection comes from Irish-Filipino DJ and promoter Jenn Hession, whose blistering, bass-heavy sound moves fluidly through hardcore, dubstep, jungle and beyond. Since launching her DJ career at the close of 2019, Jenn has steadily carved out a distinct place within Dublin’s underground circuit. Alongside her work as a DJ, she founded Instinct Society, originally a college collective that became a gateway to the wider Irish electronic music community and beyond. Emerging through a mix of live gigs and DIY rave spaces in late 2020, Jenn first became known for sets rooted in harder, high-energy sounds, before gradually expanding her musical scope. Her trajectory through the local scene has since seen her play some of Dublin’s key venues, including Here & Now, Cellar, Wigwam and The Racket Space, among others. Through collaborations and lineups shared with a broad range of artists, Jenn’s approach has evolved into one that embraces fluidity across genres, driven by a continual curiosity for new sounds and styles. Her contribution to the Local Selection Mix is an ode to UK hardcore and rave-soaked jungle techno, packed with euphoric, ’90s-leaning weapons that balance intensity with moments of pure release. It’s a space where rapid, divergent mixing feels as natural as allowing tracks the room to breathe, letting long, blissful breakdowns unfold into prismatic, near-transcendent moments. Jenn manages both with ease, a hallmark of a great DJ, and this relentless journey through breakneck jungle stands as a sharp reflection of her sound and sensibility. Jenn Hession
