S05E10: AGE AS A SENTENCE. Age assessment along Polish-Belarusian Border

Since the Summer of 2021 thousands of people from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia were brutally drawn to the Polish-Belarusian border by the Belarusian regime, only to find themselves trapped between two states unwilling to let them pass. As an outcome of that, the Polish government suspended the right to asylum at the border. In this episode we discussed what has changed at the border over the years and what humanitarian aid looks like there. We focus on the procedures of age determination of asylum seekers. Judyta Kuc leads us through the process introduced by Polish border guards and explains the impact of false age assessment for a minor. S05E09: WORLD REFUGEE WEEK 2026. SPOTLIGHT: SUDAN

Barham Salih, UNHCR High Commissioner, stated in the foreword for the UNHCR Global Report 2025, that “the number of people under UNHCR’s mandate has almost doubled over the past decade, from 63.9 million to 129.4 million, yet humanitarian financing moved sharply in the opposite direction.” Perhaps nowhere has this been felt more acutely than in Sudan, where over 14.5 million people are either internally displaced, or have fled seeking asylum in neighbouring countries. Two years ago we had investigative journalist and filmmaker Jordan Siegel on our show (S03E19) to discuss her reporting and film ”Invisible War." At the time, 53 million Sudanese were already trapped for over a year inside a brutal civil war between warring military factions- RSF (Rapid Support Forces) and SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces). Since then the fighting has only escalated, while critical aid reaching the people has precipitously dropped. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, and there is currently no crisis greater than Sudan to discuss the necessity of the convention. We're honored to have Jordan back to update us on the past two years of developments, and the critical work she and her colleagues are doing at the Sudan Human Rights Hub to document and archive the war crimes being perpetrated on both sides of the war.  SPECIAL GUEST: JORDAN SIEGEL Journalist, FilmmakerSudan Human Rights Hub LEARN MORE: Sudan Human Rights Hub- https://sudanhrh.org/en Sudan Investigates- https://sudanhrh.org/en/investigatesSHRH Archive (Oral History, Protest Monitor, Sudan Shahid) https://sudanhrh.org/en/archive Nesrine Malik- (article for The Guardian) “The UAE tries hard to keep its reputation spotless. HUMANITARIAN WATCH 14: Rohingya - the Largest Stateless Community in the World

In April 2026, around 250 Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals were reported missing after a boat departing from Teknaf capsized in the Andaman Sea. Only 9 people survived. In the first 4 months of 2026 more than 2,800 Rohingya had already attempted crossings, with most aiming at reaching Malaysia. In this Humanitarian Watch we explain what pushes displaced Rohingya to take this extremely dangerous journey, and how difficult life is for those that remain trapped inside Rakhine State, Myanmar and the sprawling refugee camps in Southern Bangladesh.  LEARN MORE:  This is not the first time we've covered this topic, so dive into our archive or  our previous in-depth episode on the Rohingya-  FRACTURED S03E16: STILL STATELESS- Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh  https://youtu.be/jN3e1pd8M2E SUPPORT FRACTURED: "Fractured", "Humanitarian Watch” and "DisInfo Watch” are original podcast productions of ReFOCUS Media Labs citizen journalists.  To support this program donate on https://refocusmedialabs.org/donate or join us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/c/refocusmedialabs HELP US SUPPORT EDUCATION FOR WOMEN IN AFGHANISTAN: Give them their voice back through support for our online media skills training courses.  LEARN MORE- www.refocusmedialabs.org/voices-afghan-women PRODUCTION FAMILY: Hosts:  Sonia Nandzik-Herman Douglas Herman Production Family:  Dawoud Nouri, Yaser Akbari, Ziad Ibrahim, Sonia Nandzik-Herman Wassim Ahmed, Melek Moussa, Angel Sifontes Citizen Journalists:  Yaser Taheri, Milad Ebrahimi, Yaser Akbari, Naqib Rasuli, Mohammad Ali Alami Mentorship:  Douglas Herman  Producers:  Sonia Nandzik-Herman, Douglas Herman  Graphic Design:  Eli Fazlollah  for designs by Eli go to: https://refocusmedialabs.org/shop  Music:  Theme: "Intro for Legends" by Bonkers Beat Club (Epidemic Sound)  Additional: "Mogul" by Blue Steel (Epidemic Sound) SPECIAL THANKS: To the extended ReFOCUS Family for their dedication, passion and creativity all year long. S05E06: SURVIVING VS LIVING. Long displacement in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya

In this episode we speak with Claude Jonkmans, founder of EmpowerVan, about their work delivering self-defence training in Kakuma Refugee Camp. Together, we explore what empowerment looks like in one of the world’s largest and most protracted refugee settings and why programs like this are critical in contexts marked by insecurity, poverty and limited opportunity. We unpack daily life in Kakuma, the realities of gender-based violence and how recent cuts to humanitarian aid are reshaping conditions inside the camp. HUMANITARIAN WATCH 13: From the EU-Turkey Deal to the EU Migration Pact

In this episode of Fractured we trace how EU migration policy has shifted since 2015. We unpack the initial emergency measures, including the relocation scheme that aimed to redistribute 160,000 asylum seekers across EU member states but ultimately relocated only around 35% of that target. And since March marked 10 years since the EU–Turkey deal, we devote part of the episode to remind you that under this deal Turkey agreed to prevent irregular crossings to Greece in exchange for €6 billion in aid and political concessions. While arrivals to the Greek islands dropped significantly, we highlight how this “success” came at the cost of containment policies that effectively turned Greek islands into long-term holding zones, with overcrowded camps and asylum processes stretching for years. We also examine how these approaches have evolved into the more formalized framework of the EU Migration Pact, which prioritizes border externalization, accelerated asylum procedures, and increased returns. We highlight the human consequences of these policies in Greece, where stricter laws have curtailed access to asylum and contributed to the criminalisation of humanitarian actors. We discuss the growing legal risks faced by NGOs and volunteers, including the case of Tommy Olsen, founder of Aegean Boat Report, for whom Greece issued a European Arrest Warrant.
