9/23/23 From The Diamond - Ronald Acuña Jr. making history as Braves face pitching injury issues

9/23/23 From The Diamond - Ronald Acuña Jr. making history as Braves face pitching injury issues

Ronald Acuña Jr. is putting together one of the greatest seasons in MLB history, one that should remove all doubt about who the rightful NL MVP should be.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves may have clinched early but now they have some question marks surrounding the health of their rotation heading into the postseason.

Grant McAuley sizes up the week that was for the Braves, including Acuña's greatness and some stats that underscore the historic campaign, some other offensive numbers and notes, as well as a look under the hood for the Atlanta rotation as it deals with injury issues for both Max Fried and Charlie Morton.

Jason Foster, who publishes the brand new "Total Braves" newsletter on Substack, joins to discuss the Braves uneven month of September and whether or not their inconsistent results after clinching have any bearing whatsoever on the playoff games to come. That and a discussion about Atlanta's bullpen, rotation and a little more on Acuña's season.

Matt Snyder of CBS Sports stops by to do a deep dive on the intriguing playoff possibilities in the NL and AL Wild Card races and whether or not there could be a big surprise or two awaiting us in the season's final week.

All of that and a trip around the big leagues!

9/17/23 From The Diamond - Braves clinch East, prepare for October

9/17/23 From The Diamond - Braves clinch East, prepare for October

The Atlanta Braves extended their reign atop the National League East, clinching the division for the sixth consecutive year this week.

    Now the real work begins.

Grant McAuley runs through the headlines and highlights for the week that was for Atlanta. The division clincher was earlier than usual and gives the club some time to sort out a few things for the pitching staff, rest some key players, and recharge for the NLDS. How will the Braves handle the roster decisions and manage innings down the stretch?

Meanwhile, Matt Olson and the Braves are making home run history. Olson broke the Braves' single-season home run record -- now 52 and counting -- as the Braves take aim at the MLB record. How much time will MVP-hopeful Ronald Acuña Jr. miss after tweaking his calf on Friday? He is absent from the lineup this weekend, but the star outfielder and the club did not seem overly concerned, but neither want to chance it wither bigger aspirations awaiting them next month.

Kris Willis of Battery Power joins the show to size up the Atlanta pitching staff while Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com checks in to size up the Wild Card races, big pitching injuries for several clubs, and the NL MVP race between Acuña and Mookie Betts of the Dodgers.

9/9/23 From The Diamond - Braves closing in on East crown, Andruw honored

The Atlanta Braves' magic number to clinch the NL East has reached single-digits as we approach mid-September.

Grant McAuley covers the biggest Braves headlines from the week that was, including the continued greatness from Ronald Acuña Jr. that defines a historic season for the young superstar, Matt Olson and the club's chase of home run history, Atlanta's series victory in a potential postseason preview with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and a look ahead to the coming week.

Longtime Braves broadcaster Chip Caray joins the show to discuss his family's broadcast legacy, his latest chapter in St. Louis and much more. Special guest Alden Gonzalez of ESPN stops by to talk about Shohei Ohtani's injury and the ramifications on his impending free-agency as well as the Braves and Dodgers, MVP showdown between Acuña and Mookie Betts and the troubling news for Julio Urias.

And as the Braves honor Andruw Jones by retiring his number over the weekend, I reflected on Andruw's defensive prowess, Hall of Fame case, and hear from a couple of former teammates. Nick Green and Eddie Perez share their memories of playing alongside Jones and his unparalleled greatness with the glove.

9/3/23 From The Diamond - Braves send a message with successful road trip

9/3/23 From The Diamond - Braves send a message with successful road trip

The Atlanta Braves enjoyed one of their best road trips of the season, capped by taking a four-game series from the red-hot Los Angeles Dodgers.

Grant McAuley is back to discuss all the big stories for Atlanta in the week that was and look ahead for the week to come. After winning their first series in Dodger Stadium in just over a decade, the Braves return home to host the Cardinals and Pirates.

Just how good has Ronald Acuña Jr. been? He sent his own message in the MVP race with some mammoth home runs against Los Angeles. Marcell Ozuna has also been sending some balls out of the yard and making a statement with his bat of late. But what is going on with Matt Olson? Is this home run drought cause for alarm?

The Atlanta Braves offense is certainly not in a home run drought, setting a franchise record for most homers in a single-season during the trip and taking aim at the MLB single-season record. Meanwhile, Spencer Strider is on a date with strikeout history if he keeps up his current pace. We'll take a deep dive into those numbers and his Cy Young candidacy and a dark horse candidate in the Braves rotation to keep an eye on.

Grant also caught up with the play-by-play voice of the Dodgers this week. Joe Davis checks in for a chat about the big weekend series, the rivalry between the Braves and Dodgers, the MVP race between Acuña and Mookie Betts, as well as what other NL clubs we should keep an eye on come October.

8/27/23 From The Diamond - An MVP debate as Braves come down the stretch

8/27/23 From The Diamond - An MVP debate as Braves come down the stretch

The Atlanta Braves are coming down the stretch and picking up steam as the month of September approaches.

Grant McAuley breaks down the top stories for the Braves as they play through their last trip out west and will wrap up their 10-game road trip with four against the Los Angeles Dodgers, a possible postseason preview for two National League powerhouse teams. It appears the Atlanta rotation is starting to build some momentum at an opportune time.

The Braves and Dodgers share many similarities, including each club boasting a pair of MVP candidates as the season winds to a close. While Ronald Acuña Jr. is in the midst of a historic campaign, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, as well as Atlanta teammate Matt Olson, are also making compelling cases for the MVP Award. We'll break down the MVP race.

Atlanta is also hoping to welcome a pair of key pitchers back for the final push. Kyle Wright began a rehab assignment with an encouraging outing and hopes to return in September. Meanwhile, veteran reliever Jesse Chavez is finally nearing a rehab assignment of his own after being struck in the knee by a line drive in June and suffering an injury that ended up being a bit more severe that first thought. You'll hear from both of those men as they prepare for returns.

We'll also talk Braves lineup dominance and some of the biggest stories in MLB with Ben Verlander of Fox Sports, host of the Flippin' Bats podcast. He'll weigh in on Atlanta's crazy offensive capabilities, Shohei Ohtani's injury, and how his brother Justin ended up back in Houston just months after signing a huge free-agent contract with the New York Mets.

8/22/23 From The Diamond - Braves putting pieces together for final push

The Atlanta Braves still hold the best record in baseball and have firm grasp on the National League East as September approaches.

Grant McAuley recaps the week that was for the Braves, which included more standout performances from the offense, some very welcome course corrections in the Atlanta rotation, some encouraging injury updates for Ozzie Albies, Kyle Wright and Jesse Chavez, as well as a look at how the club could handle the fifth (and perhaps sixth) spot in the starting rotation.

Hall of Famer John Smoltz shares his memories of the 1987 trade that brought him to the Braves organization and sent Tom Glavine to the big leagues some 36 years ago this month. He also discusses his broadcast career, the players only Bally Sports broadcast team that reunites this week, and discusses the potential of Spencer Strider.

We also dip into the archives on Braves Alumni Weekend to hear from a member of the 1995 World Series champion club. Ryan Klesko shares his Fall Classic memories, stories about his time rising through the minor leagues with Chipper Jones and much more in a great conversation with the former Atlanta left fielder and first baseman.
