  1. Episode 1

    The Inheritance

    Eisenhower’s March 1960 authorization for small teams and a resistance that never materialized — handed to a new president who was never asked, on the record we have, whether he wanted an invasion at all. What the files don’t settle: We cannot tell you what John F. Kennedy heard on 18 November 1960. The briefing paper is missing, and the only account of what was planned is a reconstruction written in 1979 — the same official history that upgraded the Cuba Study Group’s “first learned of the existence of a plan” into “fully briefed.” We cannot tell you who decided to turn the guerrilla program into an invasion. Bissell, fifteen years later, said the change was “forced by circumstances” and could not name the moment, the meeting, or the people who decided it. Esterline, the project chief, said he was “drifting along” with no approved philosophy of the operation. No contemporaneous decision paper exists.   2. Episode 2

    The Secret Army

    Guatemala camps, the November pivot to amphibious assault, and five contradictory answers to what the exiles were promised about American backing. What the files don’t settle: We cannot tell you what Esterline’s “Status of Forces Agreement” with Ydígoras said. The text is not in the record; it survives only as his oral-history recollection inside the official history written nineteen years later. The 21 December 1960 secret agreement, signed by Guatemalan Ambassador Carlos Alejos, is likewise text-absent. We cannot tell you when the force took the name Brigade 2506. The naming origin — the fallen trainee’s dog-tag or serial number — is verified; the date of adoption is not found in the corpus. We cannot tell you what any CIA officer told the brigade’s ground-force men, in the Guatemala camps, about American backing. No promise on paper from the training period; no denial on paper from the training period. The paper trail is complete at both ends and silent in the middle. Season 1, Episode 2 · The Bay of Pigs.   3. Episode 3

    The Cover Story

    The staged defector flight, Stevenson at the UN, and a denial written in Washington before the ambassador who would speak it was told what it covered. What the files don’t settle: We cannot tell you who decided Stevenson would not be told. The briefing he received was vague, by the White House's own admission. The denial lines he spoke were drafted in Washington by the Agency and the White House, not by him. He was never told about the 15 April strikes or the staged defector flight. But no memo in the public record says: do not tell the ambassador. No meeting note, no named decision-maker, no signature. The cover story was designed in writing — the Barnes memo, the Bissell paper, the reconstructed meeting notes. The decision to keep the man who would speak it in the dark was not. Or its paper has never been declassified. We cannot settle where the staged aircraft landed. The plan said Miami. The same-day mission report says only "destination." The FRUS operational summary identifies Key West. A genuinely damaged strike aircraft landed separately at Boca Chica. Do not state one site as settled. We cannot give you the pilot's identity beyond a single source. "Mario Zuniga" is confirmed only in Pfeiffer's 1983 history, twenty-two years after the fact. A rumored alias, "Juan Garcia," has no credible source at all, so it is not used. Season 1, Episode 3 · The Bay of Pigs. Runtime 18:44.

  4. Episode 4

    The Cancelled Strike

    The night Washington cancelled the dawn D-day air strikes — Rusk’s recommendation, pilots already in cockpits, and the sentence that cancelled it missing from the files. What the files don’t settle: We cannot give you the exact sentence that cancelled the dawn strikes. The best-supported account is a paraphrase in a May 3 CIA staff memorandum: Rusk "telephoned the President and recommended there be no air strike, in view of political considerations." No time, no transcript, no verbatim words from Kennedy. We cannot reconcile the three clocks for the same night. Seven p.m., 9:30 p.m., and Bissell's "six o'clock Sunday evening" all appear in the corpus; no document bridges what Kennedy personally understood he was cancelling. We cannot settle whether the cancellation was "probably the most serious" restraint (Taylor) or a temptation to over-explain failure (Kirkpatrick).     Playa Girón

    D-day at the Bahía de Cochinos: the landing, the Houston and Río Escondido, and four investigations that never pick one cause. What the files don’t settle: We cannot reconcile the clocks for the ship attacks. Dawn versus 0930 both appear in the record; the paper holds both. We cannot settle the Houston’s weapon or headcount. Bomb or rockets; approximately 130 or about 220. The record holds both and reconciles neither. We cannot match Carreras’s claimed April 17 B-26 kill in any American record. It is presented as unmatched. Season 1, Episode 5 · The Bay of Pigs. Runtime 18:18.

  6. Episode 6

    The Navy That Watched

    Task Group 81.8, the Essex, and orders designed to keep the fleet out of the fight — through the six unmarked jets and the missed rendezvous the Taylor Committee could never explain. What the files don’t settle: We cannot settle why the April 19 jets came early. The Taylor Committee says “for an undetermined reason, they came in almost an hour early”; Kirkpatrick says “a misunderstanding over timing.” Present both; never pick one. We cannot explain the timestamp anomaly on the CIA-to-Nicaragua flash promising Navy CAP over the beachhead. Flag it as unresolved; do not smooth it over. We cannot name the participants in the White House conference that produced the six-jet authorization. The FRUS note: “No participants are listed for this off-the-record meeting on Cuba, and no other record of the meeting has been found.” Season 1, Episode 6 · The Bay of Pigs. Runtime 19:28.

  7. Episode 7

    The Inspector General

    Kirkpatrick’s survey, the Barnes/Bissell rebuttal, McCone’s unreconciled binder, and 19 of 20 copies destroyed — the Agency’s only internal investigation of the Bay of Pigs. What the files don’t settle: We cannot adjudicate the survey-versus-rebuttal dispute. Kirkpatrick calls the survey competent; Barnes calls it “malicious and intentionally biased”; Bissell signs on to intentional bias; Pfeiffer’s official history later sided with the rebuttal. Present all sides; never pick a winner. We cannot name who destroyed 19 of the 20 copies. The AP names no author; VOA attributes the burning to McCone. Carry both; choose neither. We cannot name which senior officials “should have gone to the President and said frankly: ‘Here are the facts. The operation should be halted.’” The survey names no names.   8. Episode 8

    The Official History

    Colby’s 1973 mandate, Pfeiffer’s five volumes, the missing 70 pages, and an unfinished draft the Agency refused to sign — official history, or one man’s dissent? What the files don’t settle: We cannot adjudicate the Pfeiffer-versus-Kirkpatrick fight. Pfeiffer calls the IG report a “thinly veiled attempt to lay full blame”; McDonald calls Pfeiffer’s draft “historically unsound, tendentious”; the CIA in court called Vol. V “a polemic of recriminations.” Present all sides; never pick a winner. We cannot say whether Kirkpatrick’s ~70-page WH/4 interview record was destroyed or merely “cannot be located.” The Briggs letter of 4 June 1981 says both. Don’t smooth it. The third officer in the room remains unnamed. We cannot resolve whether five volumes that document planners calling the operation “unachievable” in November 1960, then spread blame everywhere except the planners, are history — or a defense brief the Agency itself refused to sign.   9. Episode 9

    The Taylor Committee

    Four days after the Bay of Pigs, Kennedy’s Cuba Study Group sat with Dulles, Burke, and Robert Kennedy in the room — the jury was the defendants. What the files don’t settle: We cannot reconcile the transmittal’s “unanimous view” with Memorandum No. 1’s paragraph-75 footnote recording Burke and Dulles dissenting on the central judgment. We cannot say whether the committee found Kennedy’s responsibility and muted it, or reasonably concluded his advisers failed him. We cannot say why the Brigade B-26s came an hour before the Navy CAP — Memo No. 1 says only “For an undetermined reason.” Season 1, Episode 9 · The Bay of Pigs. Runtime 20:47.

    What the Files Don’t Settle

    The Bay of Pigs finale: five hard-won certainties, five open questions the record still will not answer, and the door to Season 2. What the files don’t settle: We cannot say why the Brigade B-26s came in almost an hour early — “For an undetermined reason.” We cannot locate Kirkpatrick’s ~70-page WH/4 interview or name the third officer. We cannot produce an audited casualty count. We cannot adjudicate hit job versus honest autopsy on the IG survey, or whitewash versus honest report on Taylor. Season 1, Episode 10 · The Bay of Pigs.
