Episode 16 - From Start to Finish - The Learning Pyramids of NePoPo®

Welcome to the Full Quadrant podcast where we discuss all things related to NePoPo® and modern dog training. Your topic hosts, Jason Loong and Michael Carpenter, sit down to examine a variety of training methods, theory, and all things related to dog betterment through the lens of the Full Quadrant! In Episode 16 - From Start to Finish - the Learning Pyramids of NePoPo®, Jason and Michael dive into the nuances of the training progression framework used in NePoPo®. Spoiler alert: this episode may be difficult to follow if this is your first encounter with the theory of NePoPo® which is taught in Silver School. So bear with us as we carefully and thoroughly attempt to provide clear definitions and commentary about the process of training a dog from start to finish within this system. In order to assist first-time students of the theory behind the 3 Learning Pyramids of NePoPo®, please reference the following terms and their associated definitions: - "PoPo" Learning Pyramid: Also referred to as Positive Reinforcement Learning Pyramid. This framework of training uses only positive experiences for the dog such as positive reinforcement training (R+), Purely Positive training, and the addition of good things in the eyes of the dog to reinforce behavior. - "NePo": Also referred to as Negative Reinforcement Learning Pyramid. This method utilizes varying levels of noticeable pressure introduced in the beginning of training ("Ne", or negative, nagging feelings) to the dog that when removed, are perceived as a positive event ("Po")...ultimately creating the term "NePo" as used in NePoPo® theory. - "NePoPo": The hybrid combination of the prior to methods of training, but done in a specific order of operation. "NePo" = Negative Reinforcement followed by "Po" = Positive Reinforcement in "NePoPo" Additionally, please note that each Learning Pyramid is split into 3 horizontal levels describing progression and specific milestones to observe and work towards with each dog. (IE imagine something similar to the food pyramid diagram, but with only 3 levels). The first, or lowest level, of each Learning Pyramid is the "Learning Phase" (otherwise referred to by Michael Carpenter, as Level 1). The second, or middle level, of each Learning Pyramid is the "Intermittent Phase" (aka Level 2). And the third, or highest level, of each Learning Pyramid is referred to as "Stimulus Control" (aka Level 3).
