Allan was immediately captivated with Peter’s contagious personality, strong sense of duty, and impressive energy. In his 83rd year and on his 40th mission Allan knew this was a story that needed to be told. Hendriks shares his unique life story, beginning with his childhood as a Dutch immigrant in New Zealand. He recounts his extensive travels by sea and his classical education in the Netherlands. His academic career led him to become a linguist, specializing in Slavic languages, which eventually took him to study in Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union during the 1960s. A Life of Service: 40 Missions of Election Observation Since 1994, Hendrix has dedicated himself to observing elections across the globe, from Macedonia to Mongolia and Chechnya. He provides firsthand accounts of:   The evolution of election monitoring: Moving from rudimentary processes and national teams to the sophisticated, international standards used today.   Observations from the field:The risks of monitoring in conflict zones like Chechnya and the logistical challenges of reaching remote villages in Mongolia by car.   The human element of democracy:The moving experience of watching first-time voters and the universal importance of the democratic process.
