The two year trial will assess the efficacy of headgear during elite and community football and rugby games.     Getting our game on with Luke Heckendorf, Macquarie University – Sport

    This week on JOY Drive, Jacs Host of Game On joins JOY Drive host Warren Andrew to talk belonging with Luke Heckendorf, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Lead, Macquarie University – Sport. Luke has extensive experience in diversity and inclusion roles, having worked with Football Australia, Touch Football Australia, and the National Rugby League, is a proud LGBTQ+ ally and passionate about creating accessible, inclusive spaces for everyone. A proud member of Pride In Sport, Macquarie University – Sport has achieved Platinum Tier status, becoming the first sports organisation in Australia to do so. This recognition has led to the opportunity to undertake the first ever Pride in Sport Platinum Project aimed at uncovering barriers that LGBTQ+ students face when it comes to sport and physical activity on campus. If you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, share your voice by completing a short online survey. Your input will help create more inclusive and welcoming spaces for sport and physical activity at university. Get involved with the Project Platinum Survey and be part of driving positive change on university campuses across Australia. LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Sport link. In tennis news, Switzerland’s Mika Brunold has come out as gay with a in a heartfelt Instagram post being second male professional tennis player to come out publicly in the last year. And in football news, Sam Kerr returned for the Matildas on Australian soil for the first time in two years with a 2-0 win over New Zealand. (Starts 3:30) In awesome Emerald City Kickball sporting news, for the first time ever Kickball will be part of the Gay Games in Perth in 2030! Nathan Lithgow Stakeholder Manager and Chris Pangalos, Director of Marketing and Communications from Emerald City Kickball – Melbourne join the show in the JOY 94.9 Studio to talk community, connecting and having fun through inclusive sport! Gail and Glenn, founders of Country Struts, the boot-scooting group that’s been taking Melbourne by storm had the Carlton AFLW team jumping, turning, and toe-tapping their way through a full session of boot scouting fun recently. Did the fun factor get them the win and into the AFLW Semi-Final for 2025? Let’s say yes! You’ll be on a winner if you give boot scouting a go with Gail – the real deal rodeo dance queen complete with denim and rhinestones and concrete cowpoke Glenn! (Starts 2:14) You are never too old to give sport a go! Singer and songwriter Nicolette Forte picked up a footy 20 years after having to put it down as a 13 year old with no pathway at te time. Enter the over 35s AFL masters women’s league and the mighty Parkside Spurs! Nicolette nicknamed Nico Kico for her kicking prowess is loving the game so much so that she wrote a song about it – The Chasing Game. Check out the video featuring the team! (Starts 11:43) We welcome Melbourne United Head Coach Dean Vickerman to the JOY Sport Studio to chat about the club’s incredible support for inclusion in basketball. This is the fourth consecutive year the professional basketball club has supported basketball being a sport for everyone with another Pride Round planned for February 7 2026  at John Cain Arena. The game will be against the Adelaide 36ers – the team Isaac Humphries plays with Isaac being the  first openly-gay NBL player coming out in November 2022. Isaac played for Melbourne United at the time and Dean talks about the support for Isaac and why inclusion for the club is so important. (Starts 21:48) On Sunday just gone, the 16 November, it marked three years to the day that Isaac Humphries came out to the world and changed his life forever to become the only active openly gay male professional basketball player in a top-tier league anywhere in the world. We speak with a trailblazer in Australian horse racing — jockey Tyler Leslight. Tyler made headlines as Australia’s first openly transgender jockey, and his courage and authenticity have inspired many both within and beyond the racing world. Tyler is a participant in the Racing with Pride series, an initiative from Racing Queensland celebrating inclusion and diversity in the sport and joins us to talk about his journey, the racing community, and what it means to live authentically in the saddle.
