Welkom to the Geeky Speechie podcast where we delve into the intersectionality of the health profession and geek culture. Your host, Mialotic, is a passionate speech-language pathologist that’s very nerdy about the science of communication as well as enthusiastic about a lot of aspects of geek culture. The show covers how video games, tabletop roleplaying, TV shows, movies, and even cosplay can serve as valuable tools for communication enhancement. We discuss the strides being made to make games and media more inclusive for individuals with disabilities as well as being more inclusive to everyone using the type of language we choose to use. The aim is to provide valuable insights, foster discussions, and create a community where listeners can embrace their passions in a meaningful way as well as make pop culture a bit less scary to clinicians and educators that don’t feel confident in this area.

    Sign languages aren't universal and Gaming is listening || Communicate your way

    Even some games are adding support for sign language, like Forza. Microsoft and Xbox still seems to pave the way in this space, but other platforms aren't shying away. This week we are celebrating the just gone past book week, speech pathology week and the upcoming International Day of Sign Languages and Literacy day.

    No voice acting FORCING you to read || pop culture things & professional development

    As an allied health professional we need to keep our skills sharp, but finding a PD/ workshop/ webinar can be tricky at times.  In this epi I talk about a writing workshop I did with Learning Difficulties Australia, how I've been setting up an iPad for an adult to supplement his speech and accessibility things. Pop culture front I cover games, anime, manga and shows I've been enjoying in the first quarter of 2024 so join the conversation! We cover neurodiversity affirming practice as a developing research area and ways to better support our clients/ participants/ students.
