Generational Scriptures

We believe that the Bible is the written word of God. However, there is an idea that scripture can be understood and applied based on who is reading it. With this podcast we want to dig deeper into Bible stories and understand what the Scriptures meant to the audience of that time and what it means to us now as XYZers. We say XYZers because the host of this podcast are Chris (Gen X), Moyo (Gen Y) and Jasmine (Gen Z). Each host is at a different place in their walk with Christ but all have a desire to grow closer to God by understanding the words He's already laid out for us.

Jacob’s response: "This is God's camp!" He names the place Mahanaim (meaning "two camps" or "two hosts"). What are the 2 camps? His camp and the camp of God?  Read Genesis 32:3-8 - 13:32 The Scouting Report Jacob sends messengers ahead to Esau in the land of Seir. The Message: Humble and submissive ("Your servant Jacob"). Explains all that he has (willing to share? Compensate Easu for stealing his birthright and blessing)  The Report: The messengers return with terrifying news—Esau is coming to meet Jacob with 400 men.  More man than Abraham had to get lot back Jacob’s Panic Jacob is "greatly afraid and distressed." He divides his people and flocks into two camps. If Esau attacks one, the other can escape. Read Genesis 32:9-12 - 26:12 Jacob’s Prayer  He addresses the God of his fathers, Abraham and Isaac. "I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies." "Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother." He throws God’s own words back to Him: "You said, 'I will surely treat you well...'". Read Genesis 32:13-21 - 30:06 The "I'm Sorry" Gift Jacob prepares a massive bribe (appeasement gift) for Esau: 200 female goats, 20 male goats. 200 ewes, 20 rams. 30 milking camels with their colts. 40 cows, 10 bulls. 20 female donkeys, 10 male donkeys. He sends them in separate droves, telling each servant to say, "They belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau." 6 sets of gifts coming at a staggered pace.  Sends everything ahead of him and stays the night at the camp Read Genesis 32:22-26 - 36:32  The Midnight Match Jacob sends his wives, servants, and eleven sons across the ford of Jabbok. Jacob is left alone. The Wrestling Match: A "Man" wrestles with him until daybreak. We think Jacob is strong from him rolling the stone off the well  The Man touches Jacob’s hip socket, putting it out of joint. Jacob’s tenacity: "I will not let You go unless You bless me!" Read Genesis 32:27-32 - 44:49 The Name Change The Man asks his name: "Jacob" (Heel-catcher/Supplanter). The New Name: Israel ("For you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed"). God Prevails  Jacob asks the Man's name, but the Man responds with a question and blesses him there. The Aftermath Jacob names the place Peniel ("For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved"). Facing God or Face of God Note: Jacob limps because of his hip—this is why the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip to this day. Jacob notices Laban is no longer favorable toward him.  Does Laban notice that his tricks aren't working?  The LORD speaks: "Return to the land of your fathers... and I will be with you". Same promise God gave Jacob at Bethel in Gen 28:15 and what Jacob wanted in his vow Gen 28:20  Read Genesis 31:4-9 - 14:14 Jacob’s Plea to his wives Jacob calls for his wives into the field to explain his current situation Their father is no longer favorable toward him.  But God has been with him He has served with all his strength but their father keeps changing his wages  God has kept Laban from harming him, physically and financially Read Genesis 31:10-13 - 19:01  The Dream Revelation Jacob explains the breeding of the flocks was God's doing, not just the sticks. The Angel of God identifies Himself as the God of Bethel, the place Jacob saw the vision of Angels ascending and descending on the ladder Reminder of the pillar Jacob anointed and the vow he made. Read Genesis 31:14-16 - 28:54 The Wives’ Agreement Rachel and Leah agree: "Is there any portion or inheritance left for us?". They feel like foreigners to their father because he sold them and used up their money. They support Jacob's departure based on what God told him. Read Genesis 31:17-21 - 31:18 The Secret Departure Jacob puts his children and wives on camels. He takes all his livestock and goods acquired in Paddan-aram. Rachel steals Laban’s household gods while he is shearing sheep. Jacob "tricked" Laban by not telling him he was leaving. Read Genesis 31:21-25  - 59:06m The Pursuit Laban is told on the third day and pursues for seven days. God warns Laban in a dream: "Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad". Read Genesis 31:25-35 - 1:06:48 The Confrontation Laban catches up in the hill country of Gilead. Laban starts with “What have you done” - similar to what Jacob asked when Laban gave him Leah instead of Rachel Laban's complaints: "Why did you flee secretly?" and "Why did you steal my gods?". Laban claims he wanted to celebrate their departure (unlikely)  Jacob didn't tell Laban because he was afraid Laban would take his daughters by force. Jacob says whoever has Laban’s gods would not live. Didn't know Rachel (his favorite wife) stole them Laban searches the tents; Rachel hides the idols in a camel's saddle and claims "the manner of women is upon me" to avoid standing up. Read Genesis 31:36-42 - 1:18:35 Jacob’s Rant (The Resume of Service) Jacob is angry and berated Laban. 20 years of service: 14 for daughters, 6 for flocks. He bore the loss of animals torn by beasts himself. Consumed by heat by day and frost by night. "If the God of my father... had not been on my side, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed". Read Genesis 31:43-55 - 1:26:27 The Covenant at Mizpah Laban claims everything is "mine," but agrees to a covenant for the sake of his daughters. They set up a pillar and a heap of stones. Names: Laban calls it Jegar-sahadutha; Jacob calls it Galeed. Jegar-sahadutha - Witness heap Galeed - the heap of witness Mizpah Blessing: "The LORD watch between you and me when we are out of one another's sight". Mizpah - to watch, watchpost, watchtower Laban stated the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor but Jacob only swore by the Fear of his father Issac  The Farewell They offer a sacrifice and eat a meal. Early in the morning, Laban kisses his grandchildren and daughters, blesses them, and returns home.

(Why not seek the LORD on her behalf like his dad) Rachel Gives her servant Bilhah to Jacob for children Gives is crazy, sign of the times Bilhah Conceives and bore a son Rachel Names him - Son 5 - Dan Bilhah conceives again and bore a son Rachel Name him - Son 6 - Natphtali Read Genesis 30 9-13 - 41:20 Leah Ceased bearing children Leah Took and gave her servant Zilpah Jacob as a wife (not said about Bilhah) Zilpah bore a son Leah Names him - Son 7 - Gad Zilpah bore another son Leah Names him - Son 8 - Asher Read Genesis 30 14-24 - 44:30 The Mandrake situation Days of Wheat Harvest Reuben (Leah’s First Born) found some mandrakes Rachel sounds like Esau - Give me some of your son’s mandrakes (stew) Leah sounds like Jacob - You take my husband and my son’s mandrakes They make a deal for the mandrakes Traded mandrakes for her husband (that’s crazy) Jacob returns and is told he was ‘hired’ for some ‘mandrakes’, he went God listened to Leah?? - When did she ask, was her asking for her husband asking for children? She Conceived and bore a son - Son 9 - Issachar She conceived again and bore a son -  Son 10 - Zebulun She also had a daughter named Dinah Now it is Rachel’s turn God remembered Rachel - remembered means what? God listened to her - when did she ask She conceived and bore a son - Son 11 - Joseph May the LORD add to me another son! Read Genesis 30 25-30 - 1:05:51 As soon as, some immediacy Jacob confronted Laban (confronted may be a strong word) Want to leave - Go home - with his wives and children Laban relays the all too familiar words of the Patriarchs The Lord has blessed me because of you Name your wages and I will give it Jacob is not having it Your livestock has increased abundantly  The LORD has blessed you wherever I worked (every step of the way) When shall I provide for my household (all of this is in the possession of Laban) Read Genesis 30 31-36 - 1:14:46 Laban still trying to bargain from a place of strength What shall I give you? Jacob is bargaining from a place of already offered effectiveness Growing my own wealth Providing for my own family I am doing you a favor Jacob presents the plan Will take the less desirable sheep, lamb and goats (black, speckled, striped and spotted) These are his wages Speaks of honesty - why has his honesty been questioned or because Laban is not to give him anything (the latter) Will answer for me later, when you look at my wages (the spotted, speckled, striped and black lambs, sheep and goats) Any livestock found not like that shall be counted as stolen There is agreement that this is a good deal Laban being Laban gets the upper hand, probably trying to ensure that jacob cannot go anywhere Removes all the striped, black, speckled and spotted livestock from his flocks Gives them to his sons Puts a 3 days journey between those and the flocks that Jacob is to tend Read Genesis 30 37-43 - 1:23:54 Jacob did some stuff Peeled sticks  Set the sticks in front of the flocks in the troughs They bred when the came to the trough, they bred in front of the sticks and Striped, speckled, and spotted came forth - (What!!!???) Jacob separated the lambs and set the faces to Laban’s black and striped flocks Jacob also identified the Stronger of the flock Lay the sticks for them to breed Would not do this for the feebler of the flock The feebler were Laban’s and the Stronger Jacob’s Jacob increased in wealth (increased greatly) - Sounds like Isaac Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/avbe/night-in-kyoto License code: WDUZARYUHWMKKMU3
