When Your Identity Was Formed in Survival | Trauma Recovery with Coach Liz

Send us Fan Mail Episode Summary: In this episode of the Get Trauma Informed Podcast, Coach Liz explores how many of our adult behaviors were not intentionally chosen but formed through survival. Patterns like people-pleasing, emotional shutdown, and control often begin as childhood adaptations to unsafe or unpredictable environments. Over time, these patterns can feel like identity. But recovery invites a different question. What if that is not who you are? Through personal reflection and spiritual grounding, this episode introduces the possibility of separating learned survival patterns from true identity. Awareness creates space for choice. And choice opens the door for renewal. This is not about becoming someone new. It is about returning to who you were before survival became your identity. In This Episode, You Will Learn: • How childhood survival patterns shape adult identity • Why people-pleasing, control, and emotional shutdown are learned responses • The difference between survival-based identity and true identity • How awareness creates the opportunity for change • A spiritual perspective on renewal and identity restoration Key Reflection Questions: • What patterns in your life feel automatic? • Where were these patterns first learned? • What becomes possible if you begin to question them? Next Steps: If this message resonates with you, you are invited to continue your journey inside the Oasis Wellness Academy. This is a structured, supportive environment where we walk through identity, recovery, and leadership one step at a time. Recovery comes first. Awareness builds over time. And you are not expected to rush the process. Who Am I Without the Trauma? Trauma Recovery with Coach Liz

Send us Fan Mail 🎧 Episode Summary In this foundational episode of the Get Trauma Informed Podcast, Coach Liz explores one of the most important questions in recovery: Who am I without the trauma? Many of us unknowingly build our identity around survival. We become “the strong one,” “the people pleaser,” or “the peacekeeper,” not because that is who we are, but because that is who we needed to be. This episode gently shifts the focus from what happened to you… to who you are beyond it. Recovery is not about becoming someone new. It is about returning to who you were always created to be. 🔑 In This Episode You Will Learn: How trauma shapes identity through survival rolesWhy survival patterns can feel like your true selfThe difference between identity and adaptationHow recovery begins with awareness, not judgmentWhy transformation starts with renewing your mind, not forcing changeHow to begin reconnecting with your true identity 🧠 Key Concepts Covered Survival-Based Identity When safety is missing, identity forms around protection. You may recognize yourself as: The strong oneThe fixerThe caretakerThe one who holds everything togetherThese roles helped you survive. But they are not the full truth of who you are. Identity Beyond Trauma Recovery invites a new question: “Who am I beyond what happened to me?” This is where transformation begins. Not through pressure. Not through performance. But through renewal. Romans 12:2 reminds us: “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Awareness Is the First Step Before change comes awareness. Awareness allows you to: Observe your patterns without judgmentRecognize what is survival vs identityCreate space for something new ✨ Reflection Questions Ask yourself: Where did I learn to become who I am today? What part of me feels like survival instead of identity? What am I beginning to notice about myself? There is no judgment in the answer. Only information. 🌿 Continue the Conversation This work is explored deeper inside the Oasis Wellness Academy – Foundations of Recovery Pathway, where we walk through structured recovery, identity work, and trauma-informed leadership step by step. Your Trauma Recovery Is the Wealth You Carry with Coach Liz

The lessons learned through recovery become valuable guidance that can support others who are walking through similar struggles. However, as recovery progresses, many people discover something deeper. Their story begins with helping others find hope. In this episode, Coach Liz explores how trauma recovery often moves beyond personal recovery and becomes an assignment to help others find freedom. The experiences that once caused pain can produce wisdom, compassion, and understanding that guide others who are walking through similar struggles. Often the answer is already hidden within their story. You may notice that people come to you with certain questions. Others may seek your support because they recognize that you understand their experiences. Your assignment may be connected to: • The people you naturally feel drawn to help • The parts of your story others ask about most often • The patterns that God helped you overcome • The hope your story can provide to someone else Scripture reminds us in 2 Corinthians 1:4 that we comfort others with the comfort we have received. What Healthy Love Really Looks Like After Trauma Recovery Coach Liz

Send us Fan Mail Episode Overview Many people say they want healthy love. However, after trauma recovery begins, healthy love can feel unfamiliar. Peace, consistency, and kindness can feel strange when past relationships were shaped by chaos, inconsistency, or emotional instability. In this episode, Coach Liz explores why healthy love may feel uncomfortable at first and how trauma recovery helps rebuild the internal capacity to recognize and receive safe, respectful relationships. In This Episode You Will Learn • Why healthy love can feel unfamiliar after trauma  • How past relationship patterns affect emotional trust  • The six characteristics of healthy love  • How your nervous system helps guide relationship discernment  • Why recovery helps expand your capacity to receive healthy connection What Healthy Love Looks Like Healthy love does not create confusion or emotional chaos. Healthy love creates clarity, safety, and peace. Healthy love includes:  • Consistency. Words and actions match.  • Emotional safety. Feelings can be expressed without fear.  • Respect. Time, identity, and boundaries are honored.  • Accountability. Mistakes are acknowledged and corrected.  • Reciprocity. Both people give and receive.  • Peace. The relationship allows your nervous system to rest. When healthy love is present, the relationship supports growth rather than emotional survival. Listening to Your Nervous System One of the most powerful tools in trauma recovery is learning to listen to the body. Your nervous system often recognizes safety before your thoughts do. Signs of healthy connection may include:  • breathing becoming slower  • shoulders relaxing  • a calm and steady mind When something is unhealthy, the body often tightens, breathing becomes shallow, and the mind becomes restless. Your body can provide important signals when emotions feel confusing. Level Two Trauma Recovery Now Open If you are ready to continue your recovery journey, the Level Two Trauma Recovery Program, One Breath at a Time is now open inside Oasis Wellness Academy. This program helps participants develop the capacity to receive healthy love by learning:  • emotional discernment  • healthy boundary development  • attachment pattern awareness  • nervous system regulation Call to Action To learn more about the Level Two Trauma Recovery Program, visit Oasis Wellness Academy and explore the next step in your recovery journey. The Turning Point of Trauma – When You Finally See Your Worth With Coach Liz

Send us Fan Mail In This Episode We Discuss: ✨ The pivotal moment when survivors decide they deserve more  ✨ How trauma shapes patterns of self-worth  ✨ Why we tolerate inconsistency, disrespect, and emotional chaos  ✨ How trauma quietly rewrites identity without permission  ✨ The two levels of identity recovery: Awareness and Application  ✨ Why your worth is not negotiable  ✨ A guided affirmation pause to reinforce your value The Turning Point of Trauma For years, many survivors live inside patterns shaped by trauma. Accepting less.  Tolerating chaos.  Pouring into people who give nothing in return. But there comes a day when clarity arrives. And everything begins to change. Trauma Rewrites Identity Trauma can quietly teach you that you are: • Too much  • Not enough  • Required to earn love  • Safer when you shrink  • Responsible for other people’s behavior These identity wounds influence relationships, boundaries, and life decisions. Recovery requires awareness. Recovery involves practice. The Two Levels of Identity Healing Level 1: Awareness Understanding how trauma shaped your sense of worth.  Recognizing where patterns began.  Seeing your younger self with compassion. Level 2: Application Practicing boundaries.  Regulating emotions.  Choosing differently.  Building patterns that reflect your inherent worth. This is not about blame.  This is about clarity and growth. Your Worth Is Not Negotiable Your worth was not determined by trauma.  Your worth was not erased by who walked away.  Your worth was established by God. And what God established cannot be undone by dysfunction. Invitation If this episode resonated with you, consider stepping into: Level 1 Trauma Recovery for awareness Level 2 Trauma Recovery for application We are recovering one breath at a time.  Give yourself grace and stay fearless.  Bye for now.
