10 Things You MUST Stop Doing If You Want Your Addicted Loved One to Recover

Send us Fan Mail You love them. You want them to get better. And you’d do almost anything to help. But what if some of the things you’re doing to help your addicted loved one are actually making recovery harder? In this episode of the Get Unhooked Podcast, Jason Coombs breaks down 10 things NOT to do when you’re trying to help someone you love recover from addiction. This isn’t about blaming families. Most of these behaviors come from fear, exhaustion, heartbreak, and a desperate desire to keep someone you love alive. But over time, rescuing, controlling, lecturing, monitoring, shaming, and protecting someone from the consequences of their addiction can begin to damage the very relationship you need in order to have a healthy influence. Jason shares lessons from both sides of addiction—as a person in long-term recovery and as a family member, treatment provider, and author of Unhooked. You’ll learn why: • Addiction cannot be treated like a moral failure • Trying to control someone’s recovery can pull you into the drama triangle • “Cleaning the fish” doesn’t work if you put it back into the same dirty water • Rescuing someone from consequences can rob them of an opportunity to change • Lecturing often creates resistance instead of motivation • Shame rarely produces healthy, lasting recovery • Your relationship with your loved one matters more than winning the argument You didn’t cause their addiction. You can’t control it. And you can’t cure it. But you can learn how to stop contributing to unhealthy patterns—and start creating the kind of relationship where recovery has room to grow. If you love someone struggling with addiction and you’re exhausted from trying to figure out what to do next, this episode is for you. Stop Trying to Fix Your Addicted Loved One—Do This Instead

Send us Fan Mail What if the key to helping your addicted loved one isn’t doing more—but learning when to stop pushing, fixing, and rescuing? In this episode, Jason answers real questions from family members navigating addiction, relapse, broken trust, financial consequences, and the constant fear of making the “wrong” move. He explains why the advice-giver often doesn’t get an honest participant—and how curiosity, empathy, and the right questions can create the kind of relationship where your loved one actually feels safe enough to tell the truth. You’ll also hear Jason unpack the difference between helping and enabling, including what to do when an adult child is facing real-world consequences while trying to get sober. Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that your peace does not have to depend on whether your loved one gets sober, takes your advice, or makes the choices you desperately want them to make. You can love them deeply without allowing their addiction to consume your life. In this episode: • Why trying to control addiction often creates more fear, frustration, and disconnection • How motivational interviewing can change conversations with your loved one • Why being curious is often more powerful than giving advice • How to help without rescuing or teaching learned helplessness • When financial support becomes enabling • Why clear agreements and boundaries matter • How to begin rebuilding trust after addiction • The role of emotional sobriety for the entire family • How to find peace even when your loved one isn’t okay Recovery isn’t only available to the person struggling with substances. It’s available to the family too. Support the show Join Jason Coombs LIVE each week for tips and tricks and LIVE Q&A’s. Your Story Isn’t Boring. You’re Just Telling It Wrong. (Here's How)

Send us Fan Mail Why do some stories move people—and others make their eyes glaze over? For years, Jason Coombs thought the problem was his story. Maybe it wasn’t interesting enough. Maybe he wasn’t a natural storyteller. Maybe nobody really cared what he had been through. Then he learned a lesson that completely changed the way he communicates: Write for the reader, not for the writer. In this episode of the Brick House Podcast, Jason breaks down how to turn your lived experience into a story that can actually influence, inspire, and create change. You’ll discover why great storytelling has less to do with natural talent than you think, how the Epiphany Bridge gives your story structure and power, and why the person you’re trying to reach doesn’t need you to be the hero—they need you to be the guide. Jason also shares the story behind writing Unhooked, the mentors who helped him find his voice, and how the story he once believed nobody wanted to hear became one of his most powerful tools for helping others. If you’ve ever thought, “I know I have something valuable to say, but I don’t know how to make it land,” this episode is for you. Your story may already have everything it needs. You just need to learn how to use it. Support the show Join Jason Coombs LIVE each week for tips and tricks and LIVE Q&A’s. What I Wish Someone Told Me Before My First 4 Rehabs

Send us Fan Mail Getting sober is important. But what if getting sober isn’t actually the goal? In this episode, Jason Coombs shares what he believes was missing during his first several attempts at recovery—and why simply telling someone to stop drinking, stop using, stop lying, or stop destroying their life often isn’t enough to create lasting change. Because when someone is deep in addiction, sobriety can look less like freedom and more like a life sentence. Jason shares how he approaches conversations with someone who may finally be reaching for help, including why he seeks to understand before trying to convince, how to help someone discover their own reasons for change, and how to begin making recovery attractive. He also dives into: • Why “sober and miserable” can feel worse than being loaded and miserable • The difference between sobriety and emotional sobriety • Why early recovery requires convalescence—not racing to fix everything • How tiny, seemingly unimportant decisions can either pull us toward relapse or build an entirely new life • Why we recover in relationships, not treatment centers • How purpose begins to replace obsession • Why true change is ultimately identity change Jason also shares lessons from his own recovery, including five treatment experiences, rebuilding his life at 31 years old, working at a hot dog stand after rehab, rediscovering old passions, and eventually discovering a purpose in helping other people recover. Recovery becomes different when you stop seeing sobriety as the destination and start seeing it as the doorway. There is a bigger life on the other side. Stop Trying to Convince Them to Change… Do This Instead

Send us Fan Mail How do you help someone change when they don’t believe they need to? In this episode of Brick House, Jason breaks down the connection between the Stages of Change model and the Epiphany Bridge framework — showing how recovery professionals, peer supports, and anyone trying to influence change can communicate in a way that actually lands. Jason explains why advice often creates resistance, why stories create recognition, and how the right story at the right time can help someone discover their own reason to change. Using examples from working with incarcerated individuals, people in early recovery, and families impacted by addiction, Jason walks through: Why people don’t change because we tell them they shouldHow to identify someone’s false beliefs and barriers to changeWhy understanding someone’s stage of change changes the way you communicateHow to use stories to create personal epiphaniesThe difference between motivating someone and helping them discover motivationWhy strategic storytelling is more powerful than simply “winging it”Change is not linear. Recovery is not a straight path. The better we understand the journey, the better we can walk alongside people through it. The Biggest Mistake Families Make When Their Addicted Loved One Won’t Change

Send us Fan Mail If you love someone struggling with addiction, you've probably wrestled with this question: How do I stay loving and supportive without rescuing them, enabling them, or becoming a doormat? In Episode 70, Jason breaks down one of the most difficult parts of loving someone with a substance use disorder: learning how to hold clarity and charity at the same time. You can have empathy for the disease and still hold someone accountable for their choices. You can create a safe, nonjudgmental relationship and still enforce a boundary. You can love someone deeply without protecting them from the natural consequences that may ultimately help them change. Jason walks through the Stages of Change and explains why your loved one may be making incredible progress in one area of life while appearing completely stuck in another. He shares the story of “Costa Mesa Chad,” whose family nearly overlooked 60 days of sobriety because they were focused on everything he wasn't changing fast enough. You'll also learn why relapse doesn't automatically mean recovery has failed, how natural consequences can help resolve ambivalence, and why expecting someone to change every area of their life at once can leave the entire family frustrated and discouraged. Jason also explores the work happening on your side of the relationship: surrendering fear, letting go of outcomes you cannot control, setting strong fences, and developing the emotional sobriety that allows you to respond instead of react. Because the goal isn't to control their recovery. It's to become someone who can support recovery without supporting the disease—while getting your own peace, identity, and life back in the process. In this episode: • The Stages of Change and why people don't simply jump from denial to action • Why your loved one can be in different stages of change in different areas of life • How unrealistic expectations create unnecessary suffering • The difference between empathy and enabling • How to respond when a boundary is broken • Why natural consequences can actually help create motivation • Jason's “clarity and charity” approach to difficult conversations • Why relapse can sometimes become an important impact moment • The role fear plays in controlling and rescuing • What emotional sobriety looks like for the family • Why sometimes the right decision is to stay—and sometimes it's to leave You didn't cause their addiction. You can't control it. And you can't cure it. But you can learn how to contribute to recovery instead of unintentionally making the disease more comfortable. And you can learn how to live unhooked. Your Loved One Won’t Get Help. Here’s What You Can Do.

Send us Fan Mail What do you do when your loved one desperately needs help—but refuses to admit there’s a problem? In this Q&A episode, Jason Coombs tackles some of the hardest questions families face: When is enough enough? Should I push them toward rehab? What if they deny they’re using? Should I keep helping financially? And how do I influence someone who doesn’t want to change? Jason explains why people change at the speed of pain, how the stages of change affect recovery, and why pushing, convincing, rescuing, and repeatedly telling someone what they “should” do can create more resistance. You’ll also learn why Jason says people don’t recover in buildings—they recover in relationships—and how building trust and rapport can put you in a much stronger position to influence your loved one when they become ready for change. Most importantly, you don’t have to wait helplessly for them to hit rock bottom. There is work you can do right now to regain your peace, set healthier boundaries, stop riding the emotional rollercoaster, and become the kind of steady presence your loved one may eventually turn toward for help. If you’ve ever thought, “I can see exactly what they need—why can’t they see it?” this episode is for you. Support the show Join Jason Coombs LIVE each week for tips and tricks and LIVE Q&A’s. How to Get Your Life Back by Stopping the Fight Against Your Loved One’s Addiction

Send us Fan Mail “I should have caught it sooner.” For parents and spouses of an addicted loved one, that thought can create years of guilt, shame, hypervigilance, and sleepless nights. In this episode, Jason Coombs explains how to stop arguing with reality without giving up on the person you love. Using Byron Katie’s four questions and “the turnaround,” he walks you through a practical way to challenge the thoughts that keep you trapped in fear and control. You’ll learn why constant monitoring can turn you into a warden instead of a parent, how to respond to relapse without losing yourself, and why radical acceptance can make you more helpful—not less. Jason also shares the personal turning point when he stopped fighting the truth about his own addiction and finally created room for grace to enter. The addiction doesn’t have to take two people.
