Episode 3: Build What People Want (User-Centered Design & Design Thinking) with Benjamin Pietrzyk

Episode 3: Build What People Want (User-Centered Design & Design Thinking) with Benjamin Pietrzyk

Entrepreneurship is all about value-creation and building what people want. But how do we create value and create good products and services? When we think about building good solutions and good companies, we have to talk about the concepts of design thinking and also user-centered design.

In this episode, our co-hosts Naiomi Israel and Tiffany Yau interview Benjamin Pietrzyk. Benjamin is the Director of Entrepreneur Mentoring at the Uncommon Individual Foundation (UIF), founded by Dr. Richard Caruso and Dr. John Crosby. Pietrzyk has worked with UIF since 2013 to help launch UIF’s Caruso Incubator and Caruso Challenge, where he works with emerging companies and students throughout Philadelphia and New Jersey. In addition, Pietrzyk founded ondawave, an international nonprofit that creates healthier lives by increasing access to proper effective care in rural Dominican Republic and Ganar Juntos, a Spanish tutoring company that creates jobs for bilingual youth and mothers in rural areas of the Dominican Republic. Pietrzyk also worked as an adjunct professor at Eastern University and La Salle University where he taught entrepreneurship and nonprofit management. Pietrzyk studied at La Salle University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Benjamin will share his own experience as a nonprofit leader and professor on recommended practices for approaching user-centered design and how we can do so effectively by leveraging and empowering our communities.

The entrepreneurial mindset has been a big buzzword over the past few years. It is about having a set of effective beliefs, work ethics, and values to help you stay resilient in pursuing your dreams and goals when times are tough to keep pushing forward. But what about the social entrepreneurial mindset?

In this episode, our co-hosts Naiomi Israel and Tiffany Yau, interview Vanita Lee-Tatum, an educator, business developer, and artist, and one of her top students from Mount Eden High School, Ruchita Verma. Ruchita created The Community of Peace and Love, a nonprofit focused on supporting teens in their mental health journey, during her time in Vanita's empowering classroom.

Our guests will speak about what the social entrepreneurial mindset means to them through their experience in learning with Fulphil's curriculum, and how they've learned to effectively build their mindsets.
