Race, Culture, and Depth Psychology with Dr. Fanny Brewster

Race, Culture, and Depth Psychology with Dr. Fanny Brewster

Dr. Fanny Brewster is the author of five books on depth psychology from an Africanist perspective. She is a professor at Pacifica Graduate Institute and also maintains a private practice as a Jungian analyst.
Dr. Brewster describes her work as "helping others in the development of a valued, meaningful life... one that is lived with integrity, centeredness and joy." Her writing addresses her "passion and intention for wanting to see a shift in consciousness that can allow us as a collective to go beyond skin color, tribal impulses and racism, acknowledging differences while enriching our consciousness because of these differences."
Her latest book, Race and the Unconscious: An Africanist Depth Psychology Perspective on Dreaming, "offers a rich framework for exploring and understanding the language, images, and symbols of African and African American dreamlife. It expands the modern understanding of dreaming with the inclusion of Africanist perspectives, philosophy, and mythology while emphasizing the potential for ... psychological healing through dreamwork."

In this episode, we're going deeper by talking with Dr. Brewster about her work to incorporate Africanist perspectives and the experience of Black women in particular into the field of depth psychology, and the meaning and impact of this work on the wider world.
