Welcome to the Going Inside Project. Join us as we delve into the inner worlds of our guests, to explore the relationship they have with food and their bodies. Together we discover the experiences, stories and beliefs that drive their relationship with nourishment. These sessions challenge conventional narratives around healing and offer a fresh perspective.     21. Going Inside Project - Milva

    In this session we meet Milva who identifies a key Protector. She learns of this Protector’s true intention and makes meaningful connection. As she journeys inside, she also meets three younger Parts. In offering her compassionate presence she begins to help them to heal. WHO SHOWED UP A Part who is worried about food allergies A Part that is trying to find answers A Part who is concerned about appearance A Part that wants to take care of health A Part who is careful of weight gain A Part that holds grief around family history A Part who used to engage in purging A Part that used to overeat A Part who is confused about the way forward A Part that punishes, corrects and can bring critical energy A baby, 3 and 10 year old who believe there is something wrong with the body A Protector who blocks access A 21, 17 and 16 year old. WHAT I NOTICED… There were times I didn’t quite know what was happening inside and I felt comfortable to trust in Milva’s system. I sensed the Self Energy available and that her system would know what needed to happen next. I was curious if there had been a Part inside with an agenda who was pushing other Parts to move forward too quickly – the 17 year old especially, felt pressured and needed more time. WHAT I’D DO DIFFERENTLY… I’d check in to see if there was a Part with an agenda and what concerns it would have about us taking our time. I’d also check in regarding the responsibility older Parts felt towards youngers ones. I’m curious about how driven they were to put younger Parts needs before their own. I noticed a Therapist Part came in towards the end trying to create and hold space when Milva’s system was doing a great job of this already! 3 WORD SUMMARY OF THE SESSION Heart-led, gratitude and connection.     20. Going Inside Project - Jenny

    In this session we meet Jenny who identifies several Parts who show up around food. She connects with 2 key protector Parts and helps a younger Part to heal from earlier wounding. WHO SHOWED UP Coach Part who is motivated to monitor food and movement Just Forget About It Part who feels resentful and doesn’t want to conform Hesitant Part who blocks efforts to track or make changes A Part who is critical, questioning and shaming Mountain Part who fears the impact of failure and of this being known A Part who believes she is a failure. WHAT I NOTICED… As Jenny identified her group of Parts there was the potential here to work with 2 teams of Parts. However, as I learned that the Critical Part could align with either side this could muddy the waters. Instead, I invited Jenny to work with a target Part. I felt really able to trust in Jenny’s system to know what to do and it was a joy to witness the Part’s spontaneous release of negative beliefs through her tears. WHAT I’D DO DIFFERENTLY… Jenny beautifully narrated her internal experience. Given this was our first time working together I wasn’t sure if this was what happened for Jenny every time she went inside or if it was a Part who had taken on this responsibility to narrate for the listeners. As the narration didn’t appear to interrupt the flow of the session, I didn’t intervene but in hindsight I wonder what may have surfaced if I had been curious. 3 WORD SUMMARY OF THE SESSION Curios, expansive, centred.     19. Going Inside Project - Marie (2)

    In this session we meet Marie. She develops a meaningful connection with a much younger Part who took on early responsibility far beyond her years. We also meet a number of very hard working protectors who are not yet trusting of Self or the compassion being offered or received inside. WHO SHOWED UP A Part who is fearful of food A Part who has no desire to eat A Part that has a strong sensory aversion to food A Part who doesn’t want the body to change A Part who carries shame about the body A Part that wants to curl into a ball A Part who is focused on nourishment A Part that believes nourishment isn’t the solution A Part who believes it is going to be stuck forever A Part who panics around food The Swirly Part who creates a disconnect A Part in the chest who blocks compassion A 6 year old Part WHAT I NOTICED… Before the session began, Marie let me know she had some strong protectors who could intensify when she made connection with more vulnerable Parts. In response I was aware of us talking about Parts rather than being with Parts in the first half of the session. There was some benefit to this as it gave her Parts a chance to check me out. On reflection there was also some holding back on from my Parts in creating space for the being with. It was also a joy to witness the protectors give space so Marie could connect with the 6 year old. WHAT I’D DO DIFFERENTLY… Around 20 minutes in I asked “Does the Part know you are here too?” This this was too direct as it triggered the Swirly protector to come in. I could have been more gentle with this invitation. Given how triggering compassion was for Marie’s Parts I noticed a tension inside that held me back from being as warm and connecting as I would usually be. This warmth may have been very helpful for bringing self energy to her system. I was also aware that perhaps I was a too tentative with these protectors and could have been more confident in engaging with these Parts; offering recognition and validation to their experience. 3 WORD SUMMARY OF THE SESSION Explorative, gentle, tentative.     18. Going Inside Project - Kathy

    In this session we meet Kathy who gets in touch with a teenage Part who feels ashamed of her body changing and who fears her curves. She witnesses what is held by this Part and brings her home to a place of safety. She also supports an older teenage Part to adjust to the new arrival. WHO SHOWED UP… A Critical Part who rejects /disproves of the body A Part who has felt clumsy in the body A Part who believes food is a bad thing An eating Part who eats mindlessly A Part who feels ashamed of the eating A Part who has felt isolated and fearful (aged 14) An adventurous teenager (aged 17) WHAT I NOTICED… Kathy’s Self Energy was palpable with many long pauses in session (15 minutes of pauses edited out for listener experience). Deep work happened here and I was honoured to be witness to this process. I was struck by the depth of what was held by the 14 year old and the trust in her Self Energy to hold the experience. WHAT I’D DO DIFFERENTLY… I noticed when connecting to 14 year old I didn’t mirror client language and brought my own interpretation. (This was unusual for me so I was curious about what was going on here). As the angry energy of her mother appeared I instinctively invited Kathy to move between the Parts and the anger to create safety for the 14 year old. This could be perceived as being agenda driven but on reflection it didn’t come from the head, it felt a heart led suggestion. 3 WORD SUMMARY OF THE SESSION Deep, meaningful, expansive.     17. Going Inside Project - Elizabeth

    In this session we meet Elizabeth who gets in touch with a Part who yearns for life free from responsibility. She also supports a cluster of younger Parts to release what’s been held inside. Although there is no mention of her eating patterns, themes around freedom, play and safety emerge that directly relate to and influence these patterns. WHO SHOWED UP A sensation around the eye (the sheet/net Part) A Part who is frustrated as it feels blocked from making progress A Part who mocks the Part who is frustrated A Part that needs to rest A Part who wants to shake of the peace (and the connection with Self) A Part who feels guilty (believes it’s irresponsible to run off and do things) A cluster of Parts with high energy A Part that struggles with the high energy 10 and 15 year old Parts who want to feel safe to play and explore the world. WHAT I NOTICED… I noticed there was a lot of trust in Elizabeth’s Parts to guide the work. My analytical Part can sometimes struggle with the not knowing but for the most Part in this session it was able to hang back. Around halfway through the session, we got to know the sheet/ net Part and I became aware of a therapist Part emerging. The tone of my voice changed, I moved out of my body into my head and became more focused on guiding the process in a particular way. This was led by a therapist based agenda rather than curiosity. It took some time before this therapist Part settled back. WHAT I’D DO DIFFERENTLY… When I first asked the cluster of Parts if they wanted to release their energy, this was premature. There was not yet a strong enough connection yet between Elizabeth and these Parts. As they learned more about who was and Elizabeth’s role, the bond strengthened and they were able to release what they held. Before the cluster released their energy I should have checked to make sure it was okay with everyone in there. Although here was a partial unburdening and some change, this process isn’t complete, there is more work to do with the 10 and 15 year old Parts. 3 WORD SUMMARY OF THE SESSION Trust, curiosity, peace.     16. Going Inside Project - Alissa

    In this session we meet Alissa who connects with 2 younger Parts who focus on sugar to meet need. This focus began influencing eating patterns in childhood and continue to drive these patterns in adult life. Alissa connects to both Parts and we learn more about their roles and positive intentions. She supports one Part to be fully released from her role and deepens the connection with the other for future work. WHO SHOWED UP Key Parts A young Part who keeps a secret stash of treats just in case A young Part who believes the focus on health is BS (e.g. salad is stupid). Other Parts A teenage Part who doesn’t want Alissa to mess this up A Part who is in denial about health issues A Part who wants to delay focusing on health A Part who wants to indulge while it still can A Part who wants to clean up the diet and take action now (e.g. why wait?) A Part who narrates, giving context and interpretation. WHAT I NOTICED… It was tricky for Alissa to locate Parts in her body however, she had clear visuals of her Parts so we worked with her system in this way. Early in the session I spoke to the 2 young Parts using more adult language when it was clear they were really young. It would have been more supportive if I had been more attuned with my language from the offset. Alissa really embodied the energy of these young Parts so it felt like I was really with them. I noticed how helpful this was in feeling more connected as the session progressed. WHAT I’D DO DIFFERENTLY… After the young girl Part had been released from her role and we returned to the young boy Part I felt I could have done more to develop a Self to Part connection to build safety. He feels key in protecting Alissa from going without, given her earlier experiences. I would have loved more time with him as I had so many questions! 3 WORD SUMMARY OF THE SESSION Fun, connection, freedom.     15. Going Inside Project - Kristen

    In this session we meet Kristen who explores how earlier experiences changed her relationship with her body. We discover how a younger Part of her continues to feel confused about the body given the conflicting messages. We discover how hard this Part worked to try to be good in order to meet her need for connection. Kristen builds a relationship with this Part in session and helps her to heal. WHO SHOWED UP Key Parts A Part who is confused A Part who uses clothing to assess for change A Part who is concerned about passing food and body concerns down A Part who says it’s okay, we’ve done the work on this WHAT I NOTICED… I had a Part who really resonated with the confusion of the young Part and the mixed messages she received growing up. In order to remain curious, I reminded myself that although there are parallels, I don’t know Kristen’s unique experience. This helped me move from a more empathic position (I am this) to a compassionate one (I’m here with this). There was a flow to this session with lots of Self Energy available in both mine and Kristen’s systems. I noticed a lot of trust in her and her Parts in the process. WHAT I’D DO DIFFERENTLY… At the end when checking in with the Part who had initially been scared of the young confused Part, I would have preferred to have spent more time developing a connection with Self before exploring the partnership going forward. 3 WORD SUMMARY OF THE SESSION Flow, freedom & connection.     14. Going Inside Project - Marie

    In this session we meet Marie who shares her history of compulsive eating. We discover how early experiences have influenced her relationship with nourishment and the challenges with taking in both food and water. She identifies key Protector Parts and helps a young Part to heal. WHO SHOWED UP Key Parts A Part who restricts food A powerful ferocious Part who eats to compensate for the restriction (angry fire) A Part who knows there is not enough water A young Part who is cold Other Parts A Part who eats for comfort A Part who is unhappy about how the body looks A Part who feels out of control A Part who is concerned about health A Part who is learning to love the body A Part who wants to feel good again WHAT I NOTICED… I had a Part who really wanted to know the details as Marie explored her system. I had to work hard to attend to this Part throughout the session and offer it reassurance that it's okay not to know. I felt this created space to trust in Marie and her Parts to find their way. As I write this, I notice a Critical Part telling me I should have been more directive. There is also another Part who trusts in Self and this process. WHAT I’D DO DIFFERENTLY… Early on in session as Marie explored her experience, I identified a number of Parts. However, when reflecting back my observations I only named the Eating Part. This was a missed opportunity to offer her a more collective sense of her family of Parts and get clarity on who she (not me) wanted to focus on. As I listened back to the session, there were times where I felt I could have intervened a little more. This session was a tricky balance for me between leaving enough space for both her and her Parts and not too much!
