In August 2022, at a packed school board meeting in Grapevine, Texas, a mom approaches the microphone and describes the exact nightmare that Republican politicians have been warning about. She accuses a teacher of convincing her child to change genders. As a result, she says, “I lost my son.” But when NBC News reporters Mike Hixenbaugh and Antonia Hylton look into this mother’s allegations, they find a different story: of a transgender child desperately wanting to be heard, a mother determined to put God first — and an English teacher caught in the middle. And they discover this isn’t just a story about one broken family. It’s also a story about a fringe religious movement wielding newfound power and the revival of a long-simmering quest by evangelicals to remake American education based on their version of biblical values. From NBC News Studios and the team behind the Peabody Award-winning series Southlake, Grapevine is a podcast about faith and power — and what it means to protect children — in an American suburb.

Heartbreaking and real

This is a very well made podcast about the horror being inflicted on teachers and how it impacts them and their students. I come from a family of teachers and in the last 3 years this job is impossible. First covid and now they’re being accused of making kids gay/trans?? They just want to teach your kids math! I’m 30, who’s gonna be my doctor when I’m 60? A person who learned that god buried dinosaur bones bc that’s how low education has dipped by then?? We are making a whole generation of stupid kids.

Good but pretty one-sided

I am all for trans rights and I think the Christian Right is wasting their time trying to fight this in our youth. They’re too smart. But I also found an absence of critical thinking in this podcast pretty glaring. Why has there been an exponential increase in female to male transitions seeking care? Why do reasonable and progressive European countries only limit puberty blockers to clinical studies? Because we still know very little about the long-term effects of medical therapy for transitioning on fertility, bone density, and depression. It’s a scary absence in our national discourse on this issue.

Just stop

Another reason we are all pulling our kids from public school.
