OH Enviro Coalition Petition-Revoke ClassII Oil&Gas Injection wells from ODNR

OH Enviro Coalition Petition-Revoke ClassII Oil&Gas Injection wells from ODNR

Carolyn Harding with Shelly Corbin, Roxanne Groff & James Yskamp. Petitioners & legal counsel to Revoke Primacy of Ohio Class II oil & gas Injection Wells from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Shelly Corbin(Takóni Kókipešni) is Itazipco/Mnicoujou, Lakota and a member of the Cheyenne River Reservation. She has served over 15 years in the military and continues to serve in the Ohio Air National Guard. Currently, as the Campaign Representative for the Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign at Sierra Club she focuses on oil and gas infrastructure and waste related issues of the fracking industry across Ohio. Shelly is committed to connecting with the land, relationships and herself to strengthen community, connection & unity with the living world.

As a founding member of the grassroots group, Save Our Rural Environment, Roxanne Groff fought the permitting of strip mines in Athens County. Her interest in state law and the lack of implementation of rules by the regulatory agencies, led her to run for public office, first for Township Trustee, then for the County Commissioner. She participates in campaigns to raise awareness and challenge industry abuses that will affect the health and wellbeing of citizens. Roxanne works with Buckeye Environmental Network and the Ohio Brine Task Force, to stop dangerous bills in the Ohio General Assembly, regarding toxic radioactive oil and gas waste as a commodity, inadequate rules for injection wells and oil and gas waste facilities, and the current Petition to revoke primacy of Class II injection wells from ODNR.

James Yskamp is a senior attorney at Earthjustice in the Fossil Fuels Program, where he works on matters involving oil and gas and petrochemical infrastructure in the Appalachian Ohio River Valley. Since 2014, James has been representing clients in Ohio and Pennsylvania in a variety of environmental civil matters, including cases involving water rights, citizen suit litigation, air quality permitting, water quality permitting, mineral rights, pipeline challenges, and land use and zoning. James also teaches a course in environmental law at the University of Akron School of Law.

On Oct 11, 27 Ohio grassroots and non-profit environmental organizations, delivered a petition to the the US EPA, “to Determine by Rule that Ohio’s Class II Injection Well Permitting Program No Longer Represents an Effective Program to Prevent Underground Injection that Endangers Drinking Water Sources and Fails to Comply with the Requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act.”

Camp Shameless - Stop the Sweeps! w/ David Harewood & Matina Bliss

Camp Shameless - Stop the Sweeps! w/ David Harewood & Matina Bliss

Carolyn Harding with David Harewood and Matina Bliss, organizers with First Collective, working to protect, and ensure homes for, Columbus Houseless residents.

David S. Harewood is an Artist, Advocate, and Community Organizer (https://www.davidsharewood.com/). He is a Co-Founder, with FIRST Collective (https://bit.ly/3HBFMHn), Co-Chair of the Columbus Police Accountability Project (https://c-pap.info/), and Executive Committee member of the Columbus Coalition for Rent Control (http://columbusrentcontrol.info/).

Matina Bliss serves as the volunteer organizer and treasurer for FIRST Collective. Matina started volunteering with FIRST Collective during the winter months of 2022 while they were operating an overnight warming station and has been a leading organizer for camp operations. She is also a leading organizer for the FIRST Collective's stop the sweeps efforts.

Press Release Sunday, August 28, 2022, stated

“FIRST COLLECTIVE TO HOLD A SERIES OF DEMONSTRATIONS ON BEHALF OF HOUSELESS CAMP

COLUMBUS, OH-- Members of the FIRST Collective will hold demonstrations at the homes of several elected officials this afternoon regarding the forthcoming September eviction of Camp Shameless, located at 897 E Mound Street.
Camp Shameless is a houseless encampment established on the near east side of Columbus this past spring. This afternoon we will be holding space at multiple locations demanding the following:

    1. Cancel the eviction for 897 E Mound Street. (asks are edited for word count)

    2. Move all homelessness matters out of the jurisdiction of the Department of Development and to the Department of Public Health.

    3. End the Environmental Remediation Contract associated with encampment sweeps.

    4. Create a committee to review and revise practices and policies around homelessness. This committee must be inclusive of mutual aid and community organizations that work with this population, as well as folks currently experiencing homelessness.

    5. Make space and funding available for an overnight warming center during cold months.

The camp grew from a warming center we created in order to supplement the woeful inadequate resources for warming centers and inhumane conditions in the homeless shelters across the city. Access to buildings that might be used for warming centers from late fall to early spring would greatly increase the well-being of our most vulnerable populations.
