Spoiler alert: it's not all rainbows and unicorns. The boys slog through plenty of grit and grime in this first set. Highlights include a rather harrowing All Over Now and the opening Half Step>Franklin's Tower. How about some El Paso-isms straight from the mouth of our narrator: "The El Paso trots into town, or the venue, whichever you prefer. We sincerely appreciate these tales of the wicked, wild West, filled with wild, wicked Western characters. The denizens of El Paso spit in the face of the 'strangers are just friends you haven’t met yet' crowd. However, certain protocols do apply. Handsome or ugly, a friend or a foe, please refrain from stealing other men's women. It’s bound to lead to duels, bullets, dust, horses drinking from leaky, rusty buckets, tumbleweed, and tumbling dice, not the ideal scenario for potential friendship." You can probably tell where this one is headed.═══ 📚 LINKS & RESOURCES 🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten 🔗 Navigate The Series 🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR 🎯 New to the show? It's game on in the second set with not only a Scarlet>Fire but a Playing In The Band that has one questioning their own sanity. To wit: "We find ourselves within an aural neuro-net, a string-like maze that offers no exit by design. We use Jerry’s innovative explorations to climb towards the Civic Center's summit. The silken ropes that bind our captured prey to the ceiling are cut, signaling the start of feeding time. An electric outpouring of sound and spirit covers the floor, the seats, and our clothing as we lap up the shiny, silvery mixture. If we are to make it through the drums and space segment, into the back end of the show, and onward to Pennsylvania, we must gorge ourselves sufficiently on tonight’s offerings. Dissonant, unrecognizable patterns of sound are the perfect background for finishing the gruesome task. The lack of cohesion offers privacy; the crowd’s attention is everywhere yet nowhere, and a suspension of belief permeates the floor. This Playing is extremely deep, in case you haven’t figured it out by now. And we haven't even gotten to the Black Peter." Next up, a short jaunt to Penn State University for more hijinx, as the east coast tour rolls on. Be sure to check it out right here on the Grateful Shows Podcast!═══ 📚 LINKS & RESOURCES 🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten 🔗 Navigate The Series 🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR 🎯 New to the show? The second night of tour brings us to Happy Valley, soon to be transformed into Even Happier Valley, or words to that effect. Right from the opening Alabama Getaway the band's mood is on display, but is this the right choice for a Penn State crowd? Join your narrator: "However, the Penn State faithful would like to forget about Alabama. The Grateful Dead are pouring salt into the Sugar Bowl wounds, which continue to fester despite the passage of a year and four months. And would you believe the Tide adds yet another national championship to its coffers while the beloved Nittany Lions languish in mediocrity? Well, tonight is the perfect vessel with which to deposit your pent-up injustice, disappointment, and SEC contempt. 'I heard you pee in the courthouse?'C’mon, Jerry. Although it makes for captivating testimony, that absolutely cannot be a real lyric. Our disbelief leads to more lyrical missteps; it’s fourth and short, go for it. Garcia’s second solo of the evening gets the call. Jerry rips it, shredding through Dead-embedded heads. Whoa, Nelly! This Alabama is also a winner, but one we can get behind. Mission accomplished, but it’s never enough, though; we want the one-two punch, the quick transition, and the post-title arrow, which, it seems, we will get." Or words to that effect. Join us for a ripping first set and if you would be so kind, continue on to the next set, and the next show as we continue to tour, all the way up to Maine.═══ 📚 LINKS & RESOURCES 🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten 🔗 Navigate The Series 🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR 🎯 New to the show? Set two at PSU, and we are loving the Grateful Dead opening with a Take A Step back, then throttling everyone with an out-of-control China>Rider. As usual, more football-related content is brought up. From I Know You Rider: "Bob says the sun is gonna shine someday. Nittany Lion faithful, you’ll eventually win your national championship. Just wait a couple more years—first, some gratitude. You wanted a China>Rider, and by God, you are getting a monster version. The northbound train runs unimpeded. It spits power. The room fills with smoke, projecting holographic images as fierce and powerful as Oz—an all-powerful manifestation of all that is good in the world. Karmic ash is burned and discarded; throw it all into the fire so that future trains can run on its fumes. Oh man, the Dead are bringing it tonight!" You don't want to miss this one. And look what's waiting in the wings, yes, Barton Hall, on the campus of Cornell University. The shows roll on, and so do we. Hopefully, you'll continue to partner along as we make our way northward, on a Northbound Train of our own making.═══ 📚 LINKS & RESOURCES 🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten 🔗 Navigate The Series 🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR 🎯 New to the show? Night three of our tour finds us hoping the Grateful Dead can conjure some of the magic found three years earlier in the hallowed ground of Barton Hall. The answer, "It's complicated" is a rather round about way of saying "no". But as we all know, thoughts have a tendency to waver while between the dark and light. Oh there are moments, It's just that most of them are in the second set. There is more than a hint of worry going on during this tour. Row Jimmy had us wondering about health, both mental and physical. From your narrator: "Maybe the slide guitar solo has us in a trance, unable to offer the desperately needed intervention. Or is it because we need this just as much as they do? And both of us are reluctant to give it up. Not when the music is this smooth, anyway. Row Jimmy has been cleansing, as it has been troublesome. Yet ultimately, we see what we want. Our current observations are entirely speculative; none of the band members appears to be suffering from visible health issues; it must be the amplified paranoia talking. The Row Jimmy finishes with an array of levers pulled, buttons clicked, and plugs filled to ease our worried minds. Our fears mollified, we clap along with the rest of the crowd as the music segues into El Paso.” But that's enough from us. Check out this episode of Grateful Shows and take a step back to Cornell University.═══ 📚 LINKS & RESOURCES 🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten 🔗 Navigate The Series 🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR 🎯 New to the show? We finally have to move towards some good music, with a nice Shakedown>Bertha powerful enough to transform one into an amoeba and back, surfacing as a hippy bully of all things. Far out, yes, things get extremely far out, even venturing into the world of litigation. Will the witness take the stand? An excerpt from Grateful Shows: "And to the law, I state the following: I represent myself. I rise. I fall. I promise to come clean and make amends for any past wrongdoings. I shall do my best to explain the quality of this Terrapin Station as penance. Terrapin is a terrestrial invocation of harmony. It plows the earth with sharp fingernails, exposing worms and other edibles, which it quickly snaps up in its jaws. It is uninterested in battling rabbits, foxes, or other animals Aesop has in his bag. It carries the weight of all our sins, which have long since hardened into a shell that slowly circles the show's perimeter. None of us is clean, nor are we guilty. We have all made mistakes, but what distinguishes us as humans is our ability to recognize them and, ultimately, our desire to rectify them." Now we are cookin' and talkin'. Playin' in the barn gets weirder from here, which isn't a bad thing, until the ultimate payoff , which comes in the form of a teeth-rattling Alabama Getaway encore. No time to waste, we've got a trio of Civic Centers on the docket. Night four of tour on May 8th, one of the most auspicious dates in Grateful Dead history, and in Upstate New York! Could it be? For us it's the beginning of a three night Civic Center extravaganza. Glens Falls welcomes back Deadheads for the second time in less than a year for some minor league hockey rink action. From the drop of the puck Jerry and the boys decide it's gloves off as they rip into an Alabama Getaway>Promised Land. Other highlights include the first High Time of the eighties and a delirious LL>Supplication that rolls into a Ramble on Rose prompting your host to dish out these words: "The music walks us off the ledge into a place called home, where we are met by a recluse on the sofa, a cigarette dangling from a limp, pallid hand. The record player is on repeat. Our consciousness spins the vinyl while outside, meaningless life cycles. The leader of the band made a promise. We remembered the message before, but now we can’t, or won’t, be bothered. Jerry sings a personal “You know this song ain’t never gonna end” not once but twice. Never gonna end. What’s never gonna end? Music, math, and numbers. Thirty-three and a third revolutions per minute is our number. As long as it continues to spin, our fortress remains impenetrable, unbothered, and alone. The song is our solace. We hear it, we believe it. We know it to be true." Check it out.═══ 📚 LINKS & RESOURCES 🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten 🔗 Navigate The Series 🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR 🎯 New to the show? Night four of tour on May 8th, one of the most auspicious dates in Grateful Dead history, and in Upstate New York! Set two, night four of tour, and the beginning of a three night Civic Center extravaganza. Glens Falls welcomes back Deadheads for the second time in less than a year for some minor league hockey rink action. UJB provides the emotional relief necessary after the rather heavy ending. It segues magnificently into Estimated and the show is on the run. The Dead deliver an emphatic Truckin' because they can and the comes Stella. Once again words: "Jerry kindly propels it for us: simple notes, simple phrasing, and a brief dip into the inevitable choir of angels. Oh, they are among us, urging us to hold on to Garcia’s voice for very long, for it will not remain this way forever. As his voice deteriorates to the point where newcomers think the band would be better off without that Garcia guy singing, we will also notice our mental acuity fading; things once taken for granted are now a chore best left to the younger generation. The disconsolate feeling of lassitude that clouds nearly every aspect of our lives is voiced in one of the most devastating, fuzz-laden Stella outro solos Garcia has ever performed. The as-yet-to-be-experienced pain of growing old resonates. A stratospheric emotional high—behold a Stella to remember, a moment that few of us will ever forget." It's that kind of night. Check it out.═══ 📚 LINKS & RESOURCES 🔗 Follow along with music on: Relisten 🔗 Navigate The Series 🗺 NAVIGATE THIS TOUR 🎯 New to the show?
